Winter Sun Holidays from Manchester

Grey skies outside, a few days off coming up, and one very appealing idea: somewhere brighter. Find the winter escape that actually suits you, from Canary Islands beaches to Marrakech markets and Mediterranean history.

Winter sun from Manchester infographic comparing Tenerife, Marrakech and Malta, plus seasonal planning advice

First decide what you mean by winter sun

There is a big difference between lying beside a pool in a T-shirt and enjoying a sunny afternoon exploring a city. Both can be wonderful ways to escape a Manchester winter, but they lead to very different holiday choices. A photo of a palm tree tells you surprisingly little about January weather.

For a beach-led holiday in the heart of winter, start by looking at the Canary Islands. Their mild winter climate makes them a strong option for outdoor lunches, coastal walks and time in the sun, although warm seas and cloud-free days are never guaranteed. For food, architecture and enjoyable sightseeing temperatures, Marrakech, Malta and Cyprus deserve consideration, with important caveats about cooler evenings and seasonal rainfall.

That choice is easier to make if you do not have to guess a destination before you start searching. On TripsByDate, select Manchester and browse the holiday packages advertised for the dates you can travel. The feed is organised around departure dates first, so you can scroll through possibilities, compare destinations and dip back in later without repeatedly starting a destination-led search form. Listings come from participating providers; they are not an exhaustive view of every holiday for sale.

This block is not automatically restricted to winter months or sunny destinations; use it to discover what's available, then check the destination, travel dates, accommodation and forecast before choosing a winter escape.

What does winter sunshine actually look like? The numbers

Instead of trusting a sunny holiday photograph, start with historical daytime temperatures. The figures below are average daily maximum temperatures from official weather records, not forecasts, guaranteed highs or sea temperatures. The Canary Islands readings come from airport weather stations; conditions in an individual resort, at altitude or on another coast can differ.

  • South Tenerife: December 22.8°C, January 21.7°C, February 22.0°C. A strong choice for winter beach holidays, outdoor dining and exploring.
  • Lanzarote: December 21.8°C, January 20.7°C, February 21.3°C. Ideal for coastal walks, volcanic scenery and relaxed resort holidays.
  • Gran Canaria Airport: December 22.2°C, January 20.8°C, February 21.2°C. A useful climate benchmark, although individual resorts can experience different conditions.

Sources: Spain's national meteorological agency, AEMET: Tenerife South, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria Airport (1981–2010 climate normals). These are historical benchmarks, not the latest 30-year normals.

For comparison, the Cyprus tourism authority's coastal climate table gives Limassol a January average maximum of 16.6°C and around 11 days with rain in the month. The Moroccan National Tourist Office puts typical January–March daytime highs in Marrakech at roughly 18–22°C. These come from different sources and observation periods, so they are useful orientation figures, not a perfectly like-for-like ranking. For Malta, do not assume that sunny photographs mean dependable swimming weather: its winter appeal is better judged by sightseeing plans and the actual forecast.

What the figures mean: a 21°C historical daytime high is not the same thing as a 21°C swimming pool. A chilly breeze, cloud, an unheated pool or a north-facing terrace can change how a holiday feels. Equally, a sheltered south-facing spot may be very pleasant on a mild winter afternoon.

Which winter escape suits you? Six places, six different holidays

Tenerife: choose the right part of the island

Tenerife is an especially versatile winter choice. You can spend a quiet morning on a sheltered southern beach, take a boat excursion, wander a resort promenade or head inland to see volcanic landscapes. The critical detail is where you stay: the sunnier southern resort areas and the greener, often cloudier north can offer very different experiences on the same day.

Make the decision: if your priority is lounging by a pool, research southern locations such as Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos and check whether the hotel pool is heated. If you want gardens, walking and local-town atmosphere, northern Tenerife may appeal more, but do not book it expecting identical beach conditions. The official Canary Islands tourism site is a useful starting point for comparing islands and landscapes.

Which Tenerife base? Costa Adeje is a useful first comparison for hotels, waterfront walks and organised resort facilities; Los Cristianos suits people who like a walkable town with cafés and harbour activity. Puerto de la Cruz in the north can be rewarding for gardens, local character and exploring, but its winter conditions are not identical to the south. Check the exact hotel location and pool heating rather than treating all Tenerife listings as equivalent.

Lanzarote: beaches, lava landscapes and a change of pace

Lanzarote offers a winter holiday that need not revolve around sunbathing. Volcanic scenery, whitewashed villages, César Manrique's architecture and relaxed seafront towns make it attractive even on days that are breezy or partly cloudy. It is an excellent place to mix slow afternoons with a couple of memorable outings.

Make the decision: compare Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise by the character of the resort and exposure to wind, not simply the hotel star rating. For a winter swimming holiday, confirm heated-pool availability in writing; a photograph of a blue pool does not tell you its January temperature. Plan a trip into the volcanic interior, but check park access and current visiting arrangements beforehand.

Which Lanzarote base? Playa Blanca is worth comparing for an easier-going southern resort atmosphere; Puerto del Carmen offers a larger choice of places to eat and more evening activity; Costa Teguise can suit travellers prioritising watersports and open coastal scenery, though wind exposure is worth considering. If Timanfaya is a must-do, use the official visitor information for entry and tours before fixing your itinerary.

Gran Canaria: a beach break with several personalities

Gran Canaria combines beach resorts, dunes, small towns, mountain roads and Las Palmas city life. For many winter travellers, its southern coast is the most relevant place to investigate for beach-oriented holidays, while Las Palmas can appeal to anyone who wants an urban base, restaurants and culture as well as access to the sea.

Make the decision: do you want Maspalomas and Meloneras for a resort-focused trip, or Las Palmas for a more city-like stay? Neither choice is universally better, and the distances between them matter. In a short holiday, a lower-priced hotel far from your preferred activities may add transport cost and hassle. Check airport-to-hotel transfers before booking.

Which Gran Canaria base? Meloneras and Maspalomas are good starting points for a resort-focused stay with promenades and dunes nearby; Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogán offer different south-west coastal settings; Las Palmas makes more sense for urban food, museums and Las Canteras beach. The official Canary Islands tourism guide to Arguineguín explains why the south is popular with winter visitors.

Marrakech: winter sunshine for exploring, not guaranteed pool weather

Marrakech makes sense if your idea of sunshine is lunch on a terrace, visiting gardens, discovering architecture and eating well. Winter can be pleasant for walking around the city without the intense heat of summer. But the evenings can feel cold, and a beautiful riad courtyard is not necessarily a warm place to sit after dark.

Make the decision: check whether your accommodation has reliable heating as well as an attractive rooftop. If you want swimming, ask specifically about a heated pool. The medina has atmospheric accommodation, but taxis cannot reach every doorway; arrange your arrival route with the property. Browse Morocco's official tourism information and check UK travel advice before travel.

Malta: bright winter days with history and coastal walks

Malta is an excellent reminder that winter sun does not always mean a beach holiday. Valletta's streets, fortified harbours, museums and places such as Mdina give you plenty to do when the weather is too cool for swimming. It suits travellers who enjoy moving around, eating out and having a plan for changeable conditions.

Make the decision: prioritise transport connections and year-round amenities. A hotel chosen for its summer beach access may not be the best base in January. Check ferry schedules and sea conditions before arranging trips to Gozo or harbour excursions; coastal wind and rain can affect the experience. Use Visit Malta for official inspiration.

Cyprus: mild Mediterranean winter, not midsummer in February

Cyprus offers historical sites, village food, walks and a coastline that feels refreshingly different from a British winter. It is important to set expectations: December to February is the island's mild, wetter season, rather than an extension of peak summer. Some coastal businesses operate seasonally, and evenings can be chilly. The Troodos Mountains can even receive snow.

Make the decision: choose a town or resort with restaurants and attractions that operate on your dates, and check the specific hotel rather than relying on summer marketing photographs. The Cyprus tourism authority's climate guidance distinguishes the winter season from beach-swimming months. Consider Cyprus for outdoor exploring and culture first, with beach time as a welcome bonus.

Choose the holiday first, then the resort: a quick decision guide

  • Mostly pool and beach: compare southern Tenerife, southern Gran Canaria and Lanzarote first. Put heated-pool confirmation and wind shelter ahead of a tiny difference in average temperatures.
  • Families in school holidays: check winter children's activities, splash-pool heating, indoor backup activities and whether the price includes the baggage you need. Do not assume a waterpark or kids' club operates the same hours as in August.
  • Couples who like dining and exploring: consider Marrakech, Valletta or Cyprus towns with a year-round restaurant scene. Prioritise walkability and accommodation heating over beach photographs.
  • Five nights or less: examine the flight schedule, time difference and ground transfer before accepting a remote hotel. A more convenient base can deliver more usable holiday time.
  • Want actual hot weather? Be aware that these six destinations generally offer mild or pleasantly warm winter days, not guaranteed tropical heat. Set your expectations before paying.

December, January or February: which is better?

The best month depends less on a magic cheapest day and more on what you want the holiday to feel like. December can offer a welcome pre-Christmas break, but festive travel dates may be expensive. January is appealing for a new-year reset, though a winter storm or windy spell remains possible. February may offer longer afternoons and an early taste of spring in some destinations, while school half-term can affect prices and availability.

Useful comparison: choose two or three departure dates across the months you can travel, then compare the same destination, similar hotel standard, board basis and trip length. Only then compare cost. A cheap five-night package with late arrival and an early return may give you fewer enjoyable days than a slightly dearer alternative. For broader seasonal choices, see our guide to the best months for winter sun and where it is warm in Europe through the year.

How to compare the months without guessing about prices

Start with your non-negotiables: swimming, sightseeing, school dates or a particular hotel. Then compare actual operator quotes for a like-for-like trip, including identical baggage, board basis and transfer arrangements. If a Christmas or February half-term price is high, check departures just outside those periods if you can travel then. Do not assume January is always cheapest: hotel demand, flight capacity and events can produce exceptions.

Weather forecasts become most useful close to departure. Historical climate averages help choose a destination months ahead, while a short-range forecast helps decide what to pack and which activities to book. Neither can promise an exact sunny week.

What Manchester travellers should check before booking

Terminal 1 has closed, so update your airport plan

Manchester Airport closed Terminal 1 in March 2026 and now operates passenger flights from Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. Its published guidance assigns Ryanair to Terminal 3 and other airlines to Terminal 2. Confirm the operating airline and your exact terminal before arranging parking or a lift: older confirmations and remembered journeys may be misleading. The airport's terminal and car park information also explains its revised parking names.

Allow for the journey to the terminal, not just to the station

Manchester Airport railway station has links to Manchester Piccadilly, with the airport quoting around 20 minutes on the train plus a 5–15-minute walk to the terminals. Check the timetable on your actual departure and return dates, especially for very early flights and late arrivals. Travellers coming from elsewhere in Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Lancashire and Yorkshire should compare the full door-to-terminal journey with driving and airport parking. See the official train guide and National Rail.

Winter coats, sun cream and hand luggage

Manchester Airport's current guidance restricts ordinary liquids in cabin baggage to containers under 100ml, even though they can now remain inside your bag during screening. Security procedures at the airport you return from may be different. Check the airport's security advice and your airline's cabin-bag size allowance. Layered clothes are practical: you may leave Manchester in a coat and arrive in weather suited to a T-shirt, then need a jumper again after sunset.

Five questions that prevent a disappointing winter sun holiday

  1. Is the pool actually heated? Ask whether it is heated throughout your travel dates, not simply advertised as a hotel facility.
  2. Is the resort lively in winter? Check recent opening hours for restaurants, attractions and hotel facilities; some places are seasonal.
  3. What does the location mean for weather? Coastal orientation, altitude and exposure to wind can matter as much as the island's overall climate.
  4. How much will the complete trip cost? Include baggage, seats where needed, transfers, Manchester parking or rail, meals and any board-basis differences.
  5. What will you do if it rains? Choose one indoor or cultural day-trip option before travelling. A good winter holiday should not collapse after a cloudy morning.

If you're travelling with children, find out whether the children's pool, kids' club and indoor facilities run during your dates. For couples and friends, compare location, restaurant choice and evening atmosphere rather than assuming every resort promises the same holiday. Finding a winter sun package without the endless form filling

The traditional approach often begins with a destination, followed by dates, durations and hotel selections. TripsByDate reverses the first decision. Start with the days you can get away, choose Manchester, and scroll through holidays from participating operators. You can notice a Lanzarote departure you had not considered, compare it with a Tenerife package on another date, or discover that a culture-focused escape better suits your budget.

This is discovery, not a booking guarantee. Prices shown are advertised starting points, and providers confirm availability, inclusions, final costs and booking terms. Not every operator or winter package is necessarily represented in the feed. Questions about winter sun from Manchester

Which destinations are best for a beach holiday in January?

The Canary Islands are a sensible first place to compare for a mild winter beach break, especially if you choose the resort carefully. They do not guarantee hot weather, and sea temperatures or unheated swimming pools may still feel cold. Compare actual seasonal conditions before choosing.

Is Malta warm enough for a winter beach holiday?

Malta is usually better approached as a mild-weather cultural break in the middle of winter, not a reliable swimming holiday. Its history, cities and coastal walks can make a memorable trip without needing hot weather every day.

Can you find winter sun without flying long-haul?

Yes. The Canary Islands, Morocco and Mediterranean destinations offer alternatives to long-haul travel, but the warmth you can expect varies markedly. Also verify the actual route and flight schedule for your dates rather than assuming a destination has a convenient direct flight every week.

Are February half-term winter sun holidays cheaper?

Not necessarily. School holiday demand can increase prices, and a low advertised price might cover different luggage, board or transfer arrangements. Compare complete packages across your available departure dates instead of relying on a general rule.

Does TripsByDate sell the holidays?

No. TripsByDate is a holiday discovery service. Browse departure dates and advertised package options, then confirm the final details and book with the holiday provider. Check the latest government travel advice and relevant ATOL information from the CAA before booking.

Make this winter feel a little brighter

The best winter sun holiday is not necessarily the place with the most dramatic beach photograph. It is the one with the weather, activities, hotel location and travel dates that actually suit you. Decide whether you want beach time, outdoor exploring or a bit of both, then let the available dates suggest where to go.
