Holidays from London Southend Airport infographic showing Faro, Alicante, Malaga, Barcelona and Majorca, seasonal ideas and trip styles

For people in Southend, Rochford, Rayleigh, Basildon, Chelmsford and wider Essex, London Southend Airport (SEN) can make a short holiday refreshingly straightforward. Its railway station is beside the terminal, its car parks are within walking distance and its direct route network includes beaches, islands and European cities. But the real advantage is not a promise of the cheapest holiday: it is being able to compare door-to-door travel time, usable holiday days and the final package cost before deciding where to fly.

This guide covers the three destinations in our graphics, Palma de Mallorca, Faro and Barcelona, as well as what people actually need to know about Southend's trains, parking, terminal opening times, security and other holiday possibilities. All three feature on the airport's official destination list, but operating days and seasons change. Use live dates, rather than an old route announcement, when planning a trip.

What sort of holiday works best from London Southend?

  • Family beach holiday: compare Majorca, the Algarve, Alicante and other seasonal resort routes, paying attention to the resort transfer and hotel facilities.
  • Two-to-four-night city break: Barcelona is a strong city-and-coast option. Amsterdam, Paris and other European cities are also worth checking against current flight days.
  • Sun outside peak summer: consider Faro for gentler sightseeing weather or destinations such as Tenerife and Lanzarote when the timetable supports them. Winter sunshine is not the same as guaranteed swimming weather.
  • Something different: check the live schedule for places such as Malta, Marrakech and the Italian or Turkish routes. Some operate only at particular times of year.

The first decision: compare the days you can actually fly

A short-haul route might operate several times a week but not on your ideal outbound and return dates. If you want three nights away, first check the published departure pattern, then look at hotels. A late Friday flight with a very early Monday return can leave less destination time than a four-night trip with better timings. With TripsByDate you can start with your available dates, choose Southend, and browse different destinations without repeatedly entering a fixed resort.

Three Southend destinations that offer very different holidays

1. Palma de Mallorca: city-and-beach weekend or proper resort week?

Palma can be two different holidays. Stay in or near the city for the cathedral, harbour, old streets and restaurants; or use the airport as a gateway to resorts elsewhere on the island. For a brief trip, Playa de Palma may be more convenient than a faraway resort. Families staying longer might prefer Playa de Muro or Alcúdia for broad sandy beaches, while smaller coves around the island suit a different pace. Always check the exact hotel location and transfer duration.

Southend planning tip: the airport lists Palma among its direct destinations, but not every departure date is available. If you're booking around school holidays, check room configurations and pool or children's-club opening dates before assuming the advertised family facilities operate all season. For local sights and island areas, use the official Balearic Islands visitor guide.

2. Faro and the Algarve: the resort matters more than the arrival airport

Faro is a departure point for very different Algarve breaks. Tavira has a quieter character and lagoon landscapes; Albufeira offers a busy resort scene; Lagos combines a characterful old town with famous beaches and cliffs. On a short holiday, a long airport transfer can erase the benefit of a convenient UK departure, so compare accommodation by actual resort, not simply 'Faro'.

Best timing: summer makes sense for classic beach holidays, while spring and autumn are often particularly attractive for walking, eating outside and exploring villages. Atlantic water can feel cooler than expected, even on a warm day. For nature lovers, the Portuguese tourism board's Algarve guide is useful for less obvious beaches and the Ria Formosa. Southend currently advertises direct Faro departures, with days varying across the schedule.

3. Barcelona: plan the city first and use the beach as a bonus

Barcelona suits a two-to-four-night break if flight timings are kind. The Gothic Quarter, waterfront, Gaudí buildings and food markets can comfortably fill several days, without needing a car. Choose a hotel by the places you want to visit: a bargain at the edge of the city may cost you several hours of transport over a short weekend. Barcelona's beach adds variety, but for a full week of poolside relaxation a purpose-built resort may offer better value.

Book sights carefully: reserve high-demand attractions through Sagrada Família's official ticket portal and Park Güell's official site. Compare flight days as well as the hotel rate: the airport lists Barcelona as direct but not necessarily daily. For more sightseeing inspiration, see when to plan a European city break.

Southend Airport railway station: the strongest practical advantage

Southend Airport station is around a two-minute walk from the terminal, not a separate bus ride away. Greater Anglia operates services towards Shenfield, Stratford and London Liverpool Street, making the airport a potential option beyond Southend itself. The train operator quotes around 46 minutes to Stratford and 55 minutes to Liverpool Street for relevant journeys. Check your actual timetable, engineering work and the last return train rather than treating these as guaranteed door-to-door travel times. Greater Anglia's airport guide provides current details.

Useful local comparison: for someone travelling from Chelmsford, Rayleigh or Basildon, it may be much simpler to reach Southend than to cross London for a flight. For someone based in west London, the opposite could be true. Add the cost of rail fares or parking, and allow a sensible contingency if two train services are involved. Also check whether the first train of the day suits your airline's check-in deadline.

Important: the Southend terminal is not open around the clock

Unlike a major hub, Southend's terminal does not operate as a 24-hour waiting area. The airport states that it opens from around three hours before its first scheduled departure and schedules terminal opening around flights. If you have a very early booking, do not assume you can arrive the previous evening and sleep inside. Confirm the terminal's current opening arrangement using the official airport website and your airline's check-in instructions.

Parking, pick-up and drop-off: the names have changed

The airport now refers to its car parks as Standard (formerly Long Stay), Budget (formerly Mid Stay), Superior (formerly Short Stay) and Premium. They are different products, not four names for the same location. The Standard car park is advertised as roughly a three-to-five-minute walk from check-in. Compare the price for your full trip, cancellation terms, luggage needs and the walk to the terminal on the official parking page.

For drivers collecting or dropping off passengers, the airport's Express Pick-up and Drop-off is a short-stay, chargeable area opposite the terminal. Its current published arrangement is £8 for up to ten minutes, paid online after the visit by midnight the following day. Longer stops and missed payment can lead to additional charges. The nearby Budget and Superior car parks have different tariffs and rules. Check the live drop-off instructions rather than assuming there is a free terminal kerbside stop.

What can you carry through Southend security?

Southend's security-preparation page describes newer scanners that can accommodate liquids up to two litres in cabin baggage, but its general FAQ still advises a 100ml limit because scanner availability has not been guaranteed at all times. For a trouble-free trip, pack ordinary liquids in containers of 100ml or less unless the airport confirms the larger allowance for your departure. Rules at your return or connecting airport may also be stricter. Separate airline cabin-bag dimensions and battery rules still apply.

Metal flasks or containers may need to be emptied before screening; the airport describes water-refill options after security. If travelling with baby milk, medication or special dietary liquids, check the specific exemptions and any supporting evidence in advance using the UK government guidance.

Compare holidays by date

Would Southend, Stansted or Gatwick be the better departure?

Compare London Southend (SEN) against Stansted (STN) and Gatwick (LGW) using three questions: does the airport actually fly to your destination on the right day; how long will it take to reach check-in; and what is the real total holiday cost?

  • Southend can win on convenience: close rail access and a compact terminal may make an Essex departure appealing even if the flight fare isn't the absolute lowest.
  • Stansted can win on flight choice: its larger programme may offer more departure days, particularly for a weekend requiring very specific timing.
  • Gatwick can win on package selection: wider operator or long-haul choices may compensate for a longer journey to the airport.
  • The best decision is door-to-door: check two return rail fares or parking, baggage, flight time, hotel transfers and how many full days you get away.

Seven ways to find better-value Southend holidays

  • Try the dates beside your first choice: compare a weekday departure with Friday or Saturday instead of assuming weekends always win.
  • Compare three nights with four: another night may produce better flight times or package availability, even when its total price is higher.
  • Search more than one destination: if Majorca is expensive, compare Faro, Alicante, Malta or a city break that fits your actual dates.
  • Separate summer sun from winter sun: Mediterranean city breaks can be enjoyable off-season without being swimming holidays. For more warmth, see our winter-sun timing guide.
  • Compare all-inclusive against your eating habits: in Barcelona or Palma city, paying for every meal at a hotel can be less useful than a central room with breakfast.
  • Read the small print: check baggage allowances, hotel board, transfers, resort taxes and the provider's full price.
  • Check financial protection: where relevant, verify the organiser and ATOL protection for flight-inclusive package holidays.

Families, accessibility and very short breaks

With children, the benefit of a compact airport is only one part of the journey. Check the times of both flights, airport rail access or car parking, whether child car seats are included in the transfer and the opening dates of hotel pools or children's clubs. For school-holiday travel, compare travel months and prices as well as nearby departure days when flexibility exists.

The airport provides accessible-travel arrangements and step-free access between its railway station and terminal. If a traveller needs assistance, contact the airline or holiday organiser in advance, and check the airport's published accessibility arrangements and meeting points. A short walk for most travellers can still need additional planning with mobility equipment or heavy luggage.
