Holidays from Bristol Airport
A practical Midlands departure guide to beach, family, city and winter-sun holidays, with Bristol Airport tips that save time and money.

Bristol Airport gives South West travellers a practical starting point for Mediterranean sunshine, European cities and family holidays without automatically travelling to a London airport. But the best holiday from Bristol is not necessarily the one with the lowest advertised fare. The useful comparison is the full journey: departure day, airport travel, baggage, accommodation location and how much of the trip you actually get to enjoy.
This guide focuses on three ideas shown in our images, Faro and the Algarve, Barcelona, and Corfu, alongside the distinctive airport details that can save money and hassle. Flight schedules and package availability change, so use the official Bristol Airport destination directory to check routes before committing.
What holidays work especially well from Bristol?
- Faro and the Algarve: beach time, dramatic coastlines, family apartments and walking holidays; consider which resort your transfer actually serves.
- Barcelona: food, Gaudí architecture and a fast-paced city break; excellent when flight times leave at least two full days.
- Corfu: a relaxed Greek island holiday, particularly for a longer summer stay; flights are seasonal and not available on every date.
- Beyond the images: check Malaga for the Costa del Sol, Lisbon for city and food breaks, and the Canary Islands for winter-sun possibilities, subject to current schedules.
Start with your departure date, then choose the destination
The practical advantage of a regional airport is being able to compare different trip types without committing to a single resort. Search the dates you can travel, then check whether Bristol has suitable departures. A direct flight to somewhere slightly different may give you a better holiday than a bargain requiring awkward connections or a long transfer at the other end. For shorter stays, count usable hours, not just nights: an evening outbound and early return can make a three-night holiday feel very short.

Three Bristol holiday ideas worth exploring properly
1. Faro and the Algarve: pick the resort, not merely the airport
Faro is the gateway to southern Portugal, but the best place to stay depends on your holiday. For beach restaurants and familiar resort convenience, compare Albufeira and nearby coastal areas. Lagos suits a mixture of old-town evenings, boat trips and striking beaches. Tavira has a quieter, traditional feel and access to beaches via the Ria Formosa area. Choosing the wrong location can add a surprising amount of driving or transfer time to a short break.
Timing tip: spring and autumn can suit walking, cycling and sightseeing, while the hotter summer period appeals to classic resort holidays. Ocean water can feel cooler than the air. Families should check beach steps, tides and whether the hotel pool is heated outside summer. Bristol Airport lists Faro among its destinations; verify the flights for your dates.
Value tip: compare self-catering with half-board only after considering how often you will actually eat at the hotel. For a couple who enjoys local restaurants, a central apartment might be better value than an isolated hotel with more meals included.
2. Barcelona: a short trip where location beats a cheap room
Barcelona is ideal when you want a change of scenery without spending the entire holiday by a pool. Sagrada Família, the Gothic Quarter, food markets and the waterfront can fill two or three days comfortably. However, a hotel far outside the centre may turn a cheap deal into repeated transport journeys. For a weekend, prioritise a sensible base near the things you want to see.
Book the important sights: if the Sagrada Família or Park Güell is central to your plans, check official admission times and tickets in advance. The Sagrada Família's official ticket site and Park Güell's official site are better references than a generic promise of entry in an itinerary. Barcelona is shown by Bristol Airport as a year-round route, but days and airlines can change.
Useful distinction: Barcelona's beach is an appealing bonus in warmer months, but for a primarily beach-based family week, compare a dedicated coastal resort instead of paying city-centre prices.

3. Corfu: choose the coast and travel season carefully
Corfu is a beautiful choice for beach time, green scenery and relaxed Greek food. But different parts of the island suit different travellers. Corfu Town is rewarding for architecture and evenings out, while resort areas such as Gouvia or Sidari offer different combinations of beaches, facilities and nightlife. A hire car can add flexibility, but compare the total cost and whether you really need one for every day.
Seasonal reality: Bristol Airport currently describes Corfu departures as summer-season services. A winter deal search is therefore not the time to assume a direct Bristol flight will exist. Small hotels, boat operators and beach facilities also have seasonal schedules. If your dates are outside the main season, check the actual package components before booking.
Best for: five to seven nights, families wanting resort downtime, and couples who like a mixture of beaches and tavernas. For a two-night escape, consider a more compact city destination with better-matched flight times.
Bristol Airport's transport interchange: what has changed?
Bristol Airport has a new public transport interchange with 16 bus and coach bays and a covered, level-access bridge towards the terminal. This is useful for families with buggies, travellers pulling suitcases and people who prefer not to negotiate steps with luggage. Its official interchange guide explains the layout, assistance points and facilities. The transport interchange is not a mainline railway station.
Coming by public transport? Look up the Airport Flyer rather than assuming you can take a train right to the terminal. The A1, A2, A3 and A4 route maps cover Bristol, Portishead, Weston-super-Mare and Bath respectively; not every service runs with the same frequency, particularly on public holidays. If travelling by rail, allow time to transfer to the airport bus and verify both legs against your actual flight.
Accessibility: the covered bridge offers step-free access, and travellers who need assistance should request it through the airline, ideally at least 48 hours in advance. The airport's special-assistance guidance explains where to meet the assistance team.
Drop-off, parking and the free waiting zone: don't mix them up
There are two very different arrangements. The designated Drop Off & Pick Up area is a paid, short-stay convenience option near the terminal; the airport currently advertises prices starting at £8.50 for ten minutes. The Waiting Zone near the car rental centre permits up to one hour free for people waiting to collect a passenger, and a shuttle serves the interchange. The free waiting zone is not the same as free terminal-door drop-off. Check the latest rules and charges on Bristol Airport's official drop-off page.
For a longer holiday, compare on-site and off-site parking on the basis of transfer time, arrival hour, flexibility and cancellation terms, not just the daily rate. The cheapest off-site car park is not necessarily the easiest option for a 5am departure with small children.
Bristol security rules: an advantage, but not a return-flight guarantee
At Bristol's departure security, current guidance allows liquid containers of up to two litres each in cabin baggage, with liquids and electronics normally remaining inside your bag. You do not need the old clear plastic liquids bag for Bristol's own security check. Metal drinking bottles should be empty. See the live security rules immediately before travelling.
Important: this does not override your airline's cabin-bag size and weight limits, nor the rules at the airport you fly home from. A 500ml bottle permitted through Bristol could cause problems at an airport retaining the 100ml rule. Take care with connecting flights as well, because transfer security may use different restrictions. Keep power banks in cabin baggage according to the carrier's policy.

Browse holidays by dateSix checks that make a Bristol package holiday better value
- Compare actual departure days: if you can move the holiday by one or two days, look for a better combination of price and usable time, not a guaranteed discount.
- Compare complete baggage costs: check cabin dimensions, hold bags and child equipment before deciding one airline or package is cheapest.
- Check the destination transfer: Faro is not the same place as every Algarve resort, and Corfu's winding coastal roads affect travel time.
- Choose the right board basis: compare self-catering, breakfast, half-board and all-inclusive against how you actually plan to spend your days.
- Allow for getting to Bristol Airport: Airport Flyer fares, taxis and parking all affect total cost. For very early flights, consider whether an airport hotel changes the calculation.
- Know your protection: check whether your flight-inclusive package has ATOL protection and review the organiser's booking terms.
Who benefits most from using Bristol Airport?
Couples wanting two or three nights away
Barcelona or another compact European city can work well, provided you compare outbound and inbound times. A direct flight and central hotel are often more valuable on a weekend than a low headline fare with long journeys at either end.
Families travelling during school holidays
For Faro and Corfu, start with a family-friendly hotel, not an image of a beautiful coastline. Check room configuration, pool heating or seasonal opening, child facilities, flight times and whether the transfer will be manageable after a long travel day. See the family-holiday timing guide and Birmingham departure guide if you want to compare another regional airport.
Travellers who want sunshine outside high summer
Faro is interesting for quieter spring and autumn holidays, but sea temperatures differ from summer air temperatures. For winter sun, check the available routes and packages to destinations such as the Canaries rather than assuming a Mediterranean resort stays warm year-round. Our winter-sun planning guide explains the trade-offs.
Frequently asked questions about Bristol Airport holidays
Can I catch a train directly to Bristol Airport?
No mainline railway station is inside the terminal. Use a suitable rail journey combined with an airport bus, or travel by coach or car. Allow extra time between services and check the current Flyer timetable.
Are all Bristol destinations available throughout the year?
No. Barcelona and Faro are advertised with year-round service in the airport's destination guides, while Corfu is seasonal. Flight days and tour operators can still change. Confirm dates and schedules when comparing packages.
Can I take a two-litre bottle through Bristol security?
Under Bristol Airport's current rules, an individual liquid container can be up to two litres, provided it fits within permitted cabin baggage and other restrictions. Check the return and connecting airports separately, because their rules may be stricter.
Is the drop-off at Bristol Airport free?
The terminal-side Drop Off & Pick Up area is chargeable. The separate Waiting Zone permits up to one hour free for waiting before collecting passengers. Verify the latest location, shuttle and charges on the airport website.
