Best Winter Sun Beach Holidays

From Red Sea reefs to Atlantic surf villages: how to find a winter beach that is more than a pretty photograph.

Illustrated winter beach guide comparing Cape Verde, Hurghada, Fuerteventura, Agadir, Dubai and Paphos, with air and sea temperatures

There is a particular thrill in stepping off a plane in winter and discovering that your coat is suddenly a terrible idea. But the best winter sun beach holidays are not simply the places with the biggest temperature on a weather app. One destination has coral reefs just offshore; another has beaches so enormous they make your morning walk feel like an expedition. One promises gentle lunches beside the sea. Another gives you waves powerful enough to explain why the surfers look delighted and the swimmers look concerned.

Quick answer: choose Hurghada, Egypt for Red Sea snorkelling and resort swimming; Sal, Cape Verde for warmer winter beach days and huge stretches of sand; Dubai for beaches mixed with restaurants, attractions and city excitement; Fuerteventura for a shorter-haul Atlantic beach escape; Agadir, Morocco for sunshine, a long promenade and surf culture; or Paphos, Cyprus for a mild coastal holiday where archaeology and long lunches may beat swimming. There is no beach-weather guarantee anywhere: wind, waves, cloud and the actual month matter.

Our first image compares these six choices, including indicative January air and sea temperatures. Treat those figures as approximate illustrations, not verified averages for every beach or a forecast. The second image adds Madeira's volcanic pools, Cape Verde's kitesurfing and Morocco's surf coast. This guide goes further into the individual beaches, what to eat, how to avoid a disappointing hotel choice and the details holiday brochures prefer to hide behind a palm tree. For a wider climate comparison, see Europe's warmest winter sun destinations.

Which winter beach holiday actually suits you?

  • I want to snorkel in colourful water: look first at Hurghada's Red Sea coast, then check whether your hotel has safe, convenient reef access or needs a boat excursion.
  • I want warm days and a big, sandy beach: compare Sal or Boa Vista in Cape Verde, while taking winter trade winds and ocean currents seriously.
  • I want a Canary Islands beach week: Fuerteventura is superb for sand and space, but wind shelter and heated pools deserve as much attention as resort photographs.
  • I want surfing, Moroccan food and a beach promenade: investigate Agadir and Taghazout, which suit different kinds of holiday.
  • I want beach time without giving up a city: Dubai offers public beaches, food trucks, coastal paths and family attractions.
  • I mainly want coastal walks, cafés and history: Paphos is appealing, but the eastern Mediterranean is not reliably tropical in midwinter.

The decision that matters most: are you booking a winter sunbathing holiday, a winter swimming holiday, or a holiday beside the sea? The three sound interchangeable until you meet an Atlantic breeze in your swimming costume.

1. Sal, Cape Verde: enormous beaches, lively evenings and serious Atlantic wind

Best for: couples and friends wanting relaxing winter sunshine, beach walks and a compact resort town; families who choose a suitably sheltered, supervised swimming option; and adventurous travellers interested in watersports. Sal often supplies the classic winter escape fantasy: pale sand, turquoise-looking water, warm light and the magnificent absence of drizzle.

Santa Maria or kite beach? They are different holidays

Santa Maria is a useful base if you want cafés, restaurants, the pier and a town to wander through after a hotel day. Watch the activity around the fishing pier respectfully, try locally prepared fish and allow time for sunset rather than treating the whole trip as a competition to move between sun loungers. A hotel close to Santa Maria may suit food-loving couples better than an isolated resort if you want to eat out often.

On the windier side of Sal, Kite Beach is known for its kitesurfing conditions. It can be fascinating to watch colourful sails dance along the horizon, but an excellent kiteboarding spot is not necessarily a gentle children's paddling beach. If your dream is calm water, judge a hotel by the actual shoreline it uses, not by the word 'beachfront'.

Do something that is not a beach day

Sal's Pedra de Lume salt pans occupy a volcanic crater and offer a striking alternative to the usual sand-and-sea photographs. The bright mineral landscape has a story of salt production behind it. You can also explore the island's dry scenery and coastal viewpoints, but be wary of off-road tours that promise a tightly packed itinerary without explaining travel conditions, safety measures or stops.

Eat something local: look for cachupa, a slow-cooked Cape Verdean dish commonly made with maize, beans and other ingredients, with recipes varying between families and restaurants. Seafood is another highlight. If you spend a week eating nothing except international buffet pasta, Cape Verde has been rather unfairly kept at arm's length.

The essential reality check: Cape Verde's Atlantic beaches can have strong currents and unpredictable surf. The UK government's Cape Verde safety guidance specifically advises using lifeguarded beaches and obeying warning flags. Winter winds can also bring airborne dust. Bring a light layer for evenings and do not assume the sea is suitable for children simply because its colour resembles a swimming pool. Compare the island-focused ideas in our UK winter sun overview.

2. Hurghada, Egypt: the beach holiday where the fish may steal the show

Best for: snorkellers, couples who enjoy a comfortable hotel base, and families looking for a resort with beach facilities and organised activities. Hurghada's appeal is not only warm winter sunshine: the Red Sea offers coral habitats and marine life that can make a day in the water more memorable than a week looking at it.

Do not assume every Red Sea hotel has the same beach

Some hotels offer sandy swimming areas, while others are associated with reefs, rocky entries or longer jetties. That changes everything if you are travelling with a toddler, a nervous swimmer or a relative who struggles with steps. Ask whether the beach is sandy underfoot, accessible without a jetty, suitable for children and open to swimming when winds pick up. Check whether snorkelling is possible from the hotel or mainly through excursions. A beautiful aerial photograph does not answer these questions.

Consider nearby resort areas such as Makadi Bay or Sahl Hasheesh when comparing hotel styles, rather than assuming everything marketed as Hurghada puts you in the same setting. If you want shops and restaurants beyond your resort, check the driving distance to the town and whether transport is straightforward. A secluded all-inclusive hotel can be wonderful until somebody announces they planned to eat somewhere different every night.

A reef excursion should feel special, not stressful

Boat trips to the Giftun Islands area are widely promoted for snorkelling and beaches. Choose a reputable operator with appropriate safety equipment, weather policies, manageable group sizes and clear guidance on marine protection. Never touch or stand on coral, do not chase turtles or other wildlife, and do not feed fish for a better photograph. The best souvenir is a reef that can still be enjoyed by the next visitor.

For something different: investigate Hurghada's marina and local food spots, or, if you have a longer trip and enjoy history, consider whether a properly organised visit to Luxor is practical. It is not a casual trip around the corner. For meals, explore Egyptian favourites such as koshari, grilled fish, ful medames or freshly made flatbread instead of assuming hotel buffets represent the country's cuisine.

The winter catch: warm daytime conditions can turn into breezy evenings and cooler moments after leaving the water. A windbreak or pool heating can matter, especially for children. British visitors normally need a visa for Hurghada: check current official entry rules for Egypt before booking, as requirements can change.

3. Fuerteventura: dramatic dunes, volcanic sand and miles of personal space

Best for: walkers, surfers, families who like big beaches and couples who are happy with a coastal holiday that might involve a jumper after sunset. Fuerteventura's appeal is scale. Its sand, open skies and volcanic landscapes can feel almost theatrical, although Mother Nature occasionally provides a wind machine at no additional charge.

Choose the right stretch of coast

Corralejo in the north combines access to the famous dune-backed beaches with a town where you can eat and wander in the evening. The Sotavento area in the south is known for shifting sandbanks and, under the right tidal conditions, shallow lagoon-like scenery. Both can be spectacular, but neither guarantees flat, supervised swimming on your chosen day. Tides, sea state and the exact beach access point matter.

Playa de Cofete, on the remote Jandía peninsula, is a contender for one of the most extraordinary landscapes on the island. It is a place for admiring wild Atlantic scenery, not an automatic family swim stop. Remote access, exposed surf and strong currents demand respect. If your children see a perfectly empty beach and shout 'Let's go in!', the correct parental response may be a firm 'Let's look at it from here.'

Trade one beach afternoon for a local discovery

Head towards the traditional town of Betancuria to find a different side of Fuerteventura: whitewashed architecture, volcanic inland scenery and island history. Look for queso majorero, the island's celebrated goat's cheese, and local dishes made with potatoes and mojo sauces. The beach is lovely, but an island deserves at least one lunch that isn't a sandwich eaten from a plastic wrapper.

Where to stay: investigate Corralejo for restaurants and exploration, Caleta de Fuste for a more convenient resort-style base, and southern areas such as Costa Calma or Morro Jable for a different beach-focused feel. Check real distances, local winds and how you plan to get around. Our best months for winter sun guide helps put the seasons into perspective.

Additional winter beach ideas: Madeira volcanic pools, Cape Verde kitesurfing, Canary Islands black sand, Moroccan surf and winter swimming safety

4. Agadir and Taghazout, Morocco: beach weather with a flavour of adventure

Best for: couples who like food and coastal walking, friends interested in surfing, and families wanting a resort base with outings nearby. Agadir has a long sweeping beachfront, a promenade and plenty of accommodation options. Taghazout, farther along the coast, has a distinct surf-village identity. They are not interchangeable, even when a holiday search groups them together.

Surf coast or gentle promenade?

Morocco's tourism office describes Agadir's broad bay and Taghazout's famous surf breaks, including nearby Anchor Point. Its official coastal guide is a useful place to understand the contrast. Beginners should book a reputable lesson appropriate to conditions rather than choosing a famous advanced break because it looks impressive online. In winter, Atlantic swell can be exciting for surfers but less welcoming for casual swimmers.

For a non-beach afternoon, explore Souk El Had, where the lively stalls give the city a different energy from the seafront. Visit with curiosity and time rather than trying to sprint around every aisle. Another idea is a local argan-focused experience, but investigate the producer and product claims carefully instead of assuming every roadside stop is a genuine cooperative.

Eat your way into the holiday: try a well-made fish tagine, Moroccan salads, grilled seafood, amlou made with almonds and argan oil, or mint tea after a walk. If you're staying at an all-inclusive hotel, take at least one meal outside the complex when appropriate. Moroccan cuisine deserves better than being represented by a generic buffet's 'theme night'.

The booking catch: a hotel marketed as 'Agadir area' could be in a different coastal setting from central Agadir. Check the beach, resort transfer, restaurants within walking distance and any seasonal facilities. Morocco's winter sunshine does not promise tropical sea temperatures. Confirm passport and travel rules with UK government advice for Morocco. For better travel-value decisions, see our total holiday cost thinking.

5. Dubai: a beach day with food trucks, skyline views and everything else imaginable

Best for: families who enjoy organised beach facilities, couples who want sunshine and city restaurants, and friends who like mixing a lazy morning with something rather more energetic after lunch. Winter is a much more comfortable season for spending time outdoors in Dubai than the intense heat of summer. It offers a very different beach holiday from a quiet Atlantic island.

Three ways to experience a Dubai beach

Kite Beach is a lively public option for sports, walking and casual food. Visit Dubai's official beach guide describes watersports and its coastal running track; it also explains that designated parts allow night swimming under supervised conditions. Do not generalise that permission to every beach after dark.

The Beach at JBR suits people who want sand alongside cafés, shopping and family activities. Al Mamzar Beach Park is worth investigating for a more park-like family day with picnic spaces and beaches. Visit Dubai's Al Mamzar information is a sensible place to check present facilities, access and any rules. The three places offer different atmospheres, so decide whether you want a public beach, resort beach or beach-club experience before comparing hotels.

Swap one glamorous afternoon for something more grounded

Explore the historic waterfront around Dubai Creek, try an abra crossing where appropriate and taste Emirati dishes such as machboos or luqaimat. The combination of a beach morning and an older neighbourhood later on makes Dubai feel more like a real place and less like a collection of very tall buildings competing for attention.

The cost trap: paid beach clubs, hotel dining, taxis and attractions can transform an apparently affordable package into a very different holiday. Check which beach access and facilities are included in your room, and whether the location means daily transport costs. Review UK travel advice for the UAE for entry requirements and local rules before travelling.

6. Paphos, Cyprus: choose a beautiful coast, not a promise of hot swimming

Best for: couples who prefer history and restaurants to a full week beside a pool; families happy to mix coastal walking with cultural stops; and friends who want a relaxed Mediterranean setting. Paphos has attractive coastal stretches and a wonderful archaeological heritage, but January and February are not the months to promise everybody tropical swimming conditions.

Sea temperature matters: Cyprus's official tourism board says average open-sea temperatures in the coldest months are roughly 16–17°C. That is quite different from a warm pool, regardless of a particularly sunny afternoon. See Visit Cyprus's official climate guidance. For many visitors, a winter Paphos holiday is about enjoying the coast from the promenade, then exploring without summer heat.

The Roman mosaics are worth leaving the sunbed for

At the Kato Paphos Archaeological Park, remarkable Roman mosaic floors depict scenes from mythology. The official archaeological site guide explains the history and monuments. Pair it with the harbour and a good meze lunch. When weather allows, explore scenic coastal paths or investigate a carefully planned trip towards the Akamas Peninsula, always checking trail and road conditions.

Food worth finding: Cypriot meze is more than a single plate of starters. Enjoy a leisurely series of small dishes, seek out fresh local produce and ask about traditional dishes beyond the tourist menu. If you are travelling with children, a shared meal where everybody can discover one thing they like is an underrated family activity.

The winter catch: some tourist-area restaurants, seasonal attractions and hotel facilities operate differently outside peak season. Check indoor pools, restaurant opening, evening heating and car hire needs. It is a superb winter coastal escape for the right visitor, not the strongest pick if your holiday would be ruined by a chilly sea. Explore our January destination guide if winter timing is your main concern.

Two underappreciated beach alternatives worth knowing about

Madeira: swim in volcanic rock pools, when the ocean permits

Madeira is not your usual endless-sand destination, which is precisely the appeal. The Porto Moniz natural pools are formed by volcanic rock and filled with seawater. Madeira's official tourism site details the managed swimming facilities and highlights other volcanic pools around the island. However, winter swell and local weather can affect safe access, so check conditions and closures before making the journey. For black sand and dramatic scenery, investigate Seixal as a separate outing, not a promise of gentle swimming.

Madeira's big advantage is what surrounds the sea: mountains, gardens and dramatic viewpoints. It suits active couples and families who will be happy hiking or sightseeing if a pool day is cancelled. See our European winter warmth comparison for the distinction between mild weather and real beach heat.

Gran Canaria and Tenerife: a sheltered southern beach may beat a hotter-looking forecast

If the six destinations above do not quite fit, investigate south Tenerife and south Gran Canaria. A hotel near a sheltered beach, a promenade and a genuinely heated pool can offer a better winter experience than one on a windier stretch with a slightly higher advertised temperature. The specific resort and beach orientation matter; there is no universal sunny side for every weather pattern.

For travellers who enjoy exploring, combine coastal time with a volcanic landscape, a market or a local town. For more seasonal comparisons, our January warmth guide focuses on climate rather than marketing photographs.

The seven-point winter beach test before you book

  1. Air versus sea: check both. A sunny 22°C day does not mean the sea is 22°C or comfortable for a long swim.
  2. Wind and exposure: look at beach orientation, shelter, prevailing conditions and recent local forecasts, especially around the Atlantic islands.
  3. Where you enter the water: sand, pebbles, coral, jetties and steps create very different experiences for children and less-confident swimmers.
  4. Real swimming safety: look for lifeguards, flags, wave conditions and local advice. A sheltered-looking bay can still have strong currents.
  5. The hotel pool: ask whether it is heated on your dates, how warm it is intended to be, and whether the children's pool is heated separately.
  6. The hotel location: confirm which beach is accessible, whether it is public or private, and how long it takes to reach restaurants or attractions.
  7. Usable daylight: winter days are shorter; plan boat trips, long walks and return travel around actual daylight and operators' schedules.

A surprisingly useful question to ask a hotel: 'Can a child safely paddle from the beach in front of the hotel on a typical winter day, or do guests usually use the pool?' The answer is often more revealing than twenty glossy images. It is still no substitute for checking current local conditions.

Which beach holiday is best for couples, families or friends?

Couples: look beyond the sunbed count

Sal can offer an easy beach-focused week; Dubai combines sand with restaurants; Agadir adds Moroccan food, a promenade and surf-town atmosphere. If you prefer scenic walking and a long lunch to a daily swim, look at Paphos or Madeira. The most romantic hotel is not always the most remote one: somewhere you can stroll out for dinner might be the winning detail.

Families: safe water and a warm pool first

For younger children, prioritise gentle supervised swimming, simple transfers, shade and a properly heated pool. A reef hotel can be extraordinary for older children who snorkel confidently, while a beach with difficult access may be exhausting with toddlers. Check kids' clubs and waterparks for seasonal operation rather than assuming everything in the brochure opens all winter.

Groups of friends: choose an activity as well as a beach

Friends who surf may love Taghazout; active groups might consider Sal's kitesurfing scene with professional instruction; and Dubai offers a broad mix of beach sports, shopping and restaurants. A group holiday needs more than one person's dream beach: decide together whether the priority is waves, nightlife, easy dining, excursions or doing spectacularly little.

How to find better-value winter sun beach holidays from the UK

Rather than falling in love with a single resort before checking flights, try starting with your dates and departure airport. Availability can vary sharply between nearby UK airports and between departures just a few days apart. For a real comparison, look at nights, baggage, transfers, the actual hotel and its beach, meal arrangements and the facilities included. Comparing different UK airports is useful only when you also count the cost and effort of reaching them.

Be careful with a 'cheap' all-inclusive deal. In a remote Red Sea or Cape Verde resort, meals included can be convenient; beside Agadir's restaurants or Dubai's food scene, you may prefer the freedom to eat out. Neither approach wins automatically. And don't compare a flight-only price to a fully packaged holiday as though they include the same things. Our package-versus-separate-booking guide explains the wider trade-offs.

TripsByDate is built around a simpler idea: select the dates you can travel and your UK airport, then scroll through holiday possibilities. Instead of filling in the same old search form for Egypt, then Morocco, then the Canaries, browse across destinations and discover the holidays that fit. It feels closer to exploring ideas on social media than completing a never-ending travel questionnaire. Once something catches your eye, check the final details and book with the operator.

Before paying: check the UK government's destination-specific travel advice and insurance cover, especially for watersports or boat excursions. Visa rules and local advice differ between Spain, Egypt, Cape Verde, Morocco, Cyprus and the UAE.

Frequently asked questions about winter sun beach holidays

Where is best for a genuinely warm winter beach holiday?

For warmer winter beach conditions, Cape Verde, Egypt's Red Sea coast and Dubai are strong places to investigate. Which feels warmest depends on the month, wind and beach location. The Canary Islands offer a useful shorter-haul compromise, while Cyprus generally suits mild coastal exploring more than tropical swimming in midwinter.

Can you swim in the sea in January?

Yes in suitable locations and conditions, but not every sea feels warm. Red Sea and Arabian Gulf options may be more comfortable than Cyprus or the eastern Atlantic for many swimmers. Strong currents, surf and local flags can make swimming unsafe even when the water temperature is inviting.

Is Cape Verde or Hurghada better for snorkelling?

Hurghada is generally the more obvious choice for accessible Red Sea coral-reef experiences, provided you choose the right hotel or responsible excursion. Cape Verde has marine life and watersports, but a wide sandy beach is not the same thing as a sheltered reef snorkelling spot. Never assume wildlife sightings are guaranteed.

Is Fuerteventura warm enough for a beach holiday in winter?

It can be pleasant on sunny, sheltered days, with superb opportunities for long beach walks. Wind and relatively cool Atlantic water make it less predictable for extended sea swimming. Choose the specific resort, beach and pool facilities carefully.

Is Agadir good for families in winter?

Agadir can work well for families seeking a promenade, resorts, local food and outings, but Atlantic surf conditions vary and the sea is not necessarily warm. Check supervised beaches, suitable hotel pools and the location of any activities you want.

Which winter sun destination is best if I don't want to swim?

Paphos and Madeira are excellent contenders for milder coastal exploring, history, gardens and scenic walks. Agadir and Dubai offer plenty to do beyond sunbathing too. A winter holiday by the sea can be fantastic without getting into it.

What is the cheapest winter sun beach destination?

There is no permanently cheapest destination. Package prices depend on your airport, dates, duration, hotel and inclusions. Compare the complete holiday, not a headline price, and watch for costs such as baggage, transport, meals and excursions.

Find the beach that fits your winter, not somebody else's

Go to Hurghada if you dream of looking down at fish instead of up at clouds. Choose Cape Verde for expansive beaches and warmer winter days, Fuerteventura for wild sandy landscapes, Agadir for surf culture and Moroccan flavours, Dubai for beaches with a city attached, or Paphos when sunshine, history and seaside meals sound better than swimming.

Or don't decide just yet. Your next favourite beach might be one you had not thought to search for. Start with when you can escape, and let the possibilities do some of the persuading.
