SUMMER HOLIDAYS / SEASONAL VALUE

Is It Cheaper to Travel Outside the Summer Holidays?

Often, yes, especially for popular summer beach destinations. Travelling in May, June, September or October can mean lower package-holiday prices than the busiest school summer weeks. But the saving is not automatic: local peak seasons, flight schedules, weather and what remains open can all change the calculation. The right comparison is between holidays you would actually enjoy, not simply the cheapest month on a calendar.

What does the evidence actually show?

Consumer organisation Which? has reported that travelling in the shoulder seasons, often May to June and September to October for Mediterranean holidays, can reduce the price compared with peak summer. In one published comparison it found an all-inclusive Algarve resort priced at £1,912 per person in August versus £1,546 in September. That was a difference of £366 per person, or £732 for two travellers. These were observed prices for a particular resort and comparison, not a promise about current prices or every destination.

Read Which? advice on saving on all-inclusive holidays for the original example. The useful lesson is to check your own travel dates and comparable packages rather than rely on a blanket claim that September is always cheaper.

There is an important counterexample, too. Which? research on 2026 summer package prices found late price reductions in many European destinations for August travel. An expensive season can still contain good deals, and booking timing can influence the price as well as departure month.

Why can travelling after the summer rush cost less?

Flights and hotels have limited capacity. When many households want the same weeks, particularly around school holidays, competition for suitable rooms and seats can be stronger. Once that concentrated demand eases, some operators may offer more appealing prices on remaining packages. However, cheaper inventory is not guaranteed, and the most convenient flights or desirable rooms might already be gone.

The biggest distinction is between the departure season and when you book. September might have lower demand than August, but a September holiday booked very late may still cost more than an August offer sold at a discount. To understand the mechanisms separately, read why package holiday prices change throughout the year and how demand affects availability.

Which months are worth comparing with July and August?

  1. May: useful for sightseeing, milder weather and certain coastal escapes, but some swimming pools or seasonal attractions may not be fully operating.
  2. June: often offers a more established summer resort season before many UK schools finish for the holidays. Check the destination's own school calendar and local events.
  3. September: can combine warm sea temperatures in parts of the Mediterranean with fewer school-age families travelling. Some high-demand resorts remain busy.
  4. October: can suit warmer southern destinations and relaxed breaks, but rainfall risk, shorter daylight and seasonal hotel or restaurant closures matter more.

When can an off-summer holiday actually be more expensive?

Not every destination has a July–August peak. Ski resorts can have their strongest demand in winter. Christmas markets attract travellers in late November and December. Some long-haul beach regions have a desirable dry season that falls during the UK's cooler months. A particular city can also become expensive around a festival, sporting event or major conference.

Even within Europe, an October half-term departure can price very differently from an ordinary October week. And a hotel staying open for only a short summer season may offer very few packages after September. The best-value season depends on where, when and what kind of holiday you want. Our guide to peak, shoulder and off-peak seasons explains this wider pattern.

The hidden trade-off: a lower price can buy a different experience

Imagine two seven-night offers to a coastal resort. A September package costs less than an August one, but its arrival flight lands close to midnight and the hotel's beach bar and children's club have already shut for the season. A couple planning to explore the area might be delighted. A family expecting full resort entertainment might not be.

Before choosing the cheaper option, check sea temperature versus air temperature, likely rainfall, flight timings, pool heating, excursions, restaurant opening dates, transfers and usable time at the destination. These details make the difference between a genuinely good-value holiday and an apparent bargain. Our holiday weather comparison guide explains why monthly climate averages need careful interpretation.

How much could you save? Use a proper comparison, not a headline percentage

There is no reliable universal percentage saving for travelling outside summer. Instead, create a simple comparison for your specific party. The illustration below is hypothetical, not a TripsByDate price quote or observed market data:

  1. August: a seven-night package for two adults costs £1,800 in total, including baggage and transfers.
  2. September: a comparable package costs £1,500, but transfers are an additional £90.
  3. Fair comparison: £1,800 against £1,590, a potential £210 saving for the party, before any other differences or extra spending.

Then ask the question the calculation cannot answer: would both trips meet your holiday priorities equally well? A £210 saving may be excellent for adults wanting a quieter stay but less compelling if the activities you want are unavailable. What if you can only travel in the school summer holidays?

For parents with school-age children, going in term time simply to save money is generally not an appropriate solution. In England, GOV.UK says holidays are not usually exceptional circumstances for authorised absence, and unauthorised term-time holidays can result in penalties or legal action. Rules vary between UK nations. Check current government school attendance guidance and your school's published dates.

You can still compare different permitted summer weeks, departure airports, durations and destinations. Which? research has previously found meaningful differences between the first and last weeks of the English summer break, though the cheapest week can change each year. See its research on summer-week price differences. Our school holiday pricing explainer covers the demand issue in more detail.

How TripsByDate changes the way you explore different months

Traditional travel search often begins with a destination and asks you to commit to a string of choices before you see results. TripsByDate approaches the discovery stage differently: you can browse the package holiday listings carried on the site by departure date, with an airport selected if you wish. Move between dates and explore destinations rather than repeatedly rebuilding a destination-specific search.

That matters most when you're open to alternatives. Perhaps you thought you wanted a week in August, but scrolling through adjacent dates reveals an attractive package in June, or a September holiday somewhere you hadn't considered. The aim is to make discovering options feel more like browsing a modern content feed and less like filling in the same form again and again.

TripsByDate is a discovery and comparison layer, not the holiday operator. The site presents available listings from participating sources, not every offer from every operator. Displayed prices and availability may change; always follow a promising listing to the provider to confirm full costs, conditions and booking. You can browse holidays by date on TripsByDate and return whenever you want to explore more options.

A five-step check before deciding to travel outside summer

  1. Choose your non-negotiables: whether you need warm swimming water, a lively resort, a quiet break or school-holiday dates.
  2. Compare at least two feasible months: check multiple departure days rather than treating one offer as typical.
  3. Keep the package comparable: party size, hotel standard, nights, board, baggage, transfer and airport.
  4. Check what changes seasonally: local climate, sea conditions, facilities, flight frequency and planned activities.
  5. Verify the final offer: compare the full price and current availability on the actual operator's booking page.

If you're flexible on destination as well as date, compare the cheapest months to go on holiday guide and explore our Holidays by Month travel guides. These help you decide where to investigate; TripsByDate helps you discover which listed packages fit your dates.

Frequently asked questions

Is September always cheaper than August?

No. It can be less expensive in popular summer destinations, but a particular hotel, flight, local event or late booking can reverse the pattern. Compare actual packages for your dates.

Is June a better-value holiday month than July?

Sometimes. June can offer summer conditions with demand below the busiest school-holiday weeks, but pricing depends on the destination, operator, availability and exact departure date.

Is it cheaper to travel at Easter instead of summer?

It can be, but Easter dates shift, demand can be high and many beach destinations are cooler than in summer. Check the specific year, destination and weather expectations.

Can families save without taking children out of school?

Yes, potentially, by comparing permitted school-holiday weeks, alternative UK departure airports, different destinations and complete package costs. Savings are not guaranteed.

Does an off-season hotel always have fewer facilities?

No. City hotels and year-round resorts may operate much as usual, while seasonal coastal hotels may reduce services or close altogether. Check the individual property.

Does TripsByDate guarantee the cheapest package?

No. TripsByDate makes browsing and comparing the advertised listings available on the site easier; it does not guarantee market-wide coverage, the lowest price or live bookable availability. Confirm the offer with the provider.
