Summer Holidays from Manchester

Two weeks on the beach, a family week away, or a smaller summer adventure? Manchester opens up an enormous range of possibilities. The trick is choosing a holiday that suits your dates, not just a destination that looks beautiful in a photograph.

Start with the summer you want, not the same five destinations

Imagine arriving in August with children who want the beach every day. Now imagine arriving with a partner who wants seafood restaurants, a harbour and an interesting day trip. Those are both summer holidays, but the right resort, accommodation and even country could be completely different.

Manchester Airport (MAN) offers a large mix of year-round and seasonal flights. The airport's published summer route information includes established favourites such as Mallorca and Dubrovnik, as well as newer or less obvious possibilities. Routes change by season and flight schedules do not guarantee that a package is available on your particular date; check the airport's destination directory and the holiday provider's actual itinerary before booking.

At TripsByDate, the first decision is much simpler: when can you leave Manchester? Select your departure airport, browse advertised package holidays in departure-date order, scroll through the possibilities and investigate anything appealing. It is designed for the quick, exploratory browsing familiar from a social feed, rather than making you choose a destination and complete the same search form over and over. The listings come from participating providers, so they are not an exhaustive view of the entire market, and the final booking happens with the supplier.

Choose your summer holiday by what matters most

  • Low-effort family beach week: look for a sandy, accessible beach, an easy airport transfer and accommodation close to restaurants or with suitable board options.
  • Island exploring: Mallorca, Menorca or Crete might suit you, but a rental car, resort location and mountain roads can affect the whole holiday.
  • Food, history and the coast: consider Málaga, the Algarve's traditional towns or Dubrovnik, and do not assume a beach-resort hotel is the best base.
  • Peak summer nightlife: choose the town and even the part of town carefully; neighbouring resorts can feel completely different after dark.

For a broader picture of the seasons, our guide to the best months for European beach holidays helps you think about conditions rather than just school calendars.

Which month should you choose: June, July, August or September?

There is no universally cheapest or best summer month. Your choices depend on school holidays, the destination's climate, the sort of accommodation you need and how much heat you actually enjoy.

  • June: often appealing for longer days and holidays before the busiest school-holiday weeks. Check sea temperatures if swimming matters, particularly in the Atlantic-facing Algarve.
  • July: popular for classic Mediterranean beach holidays. Heat builds in many southern destinations; shade, air conditioning and a sensible sightseeing schedule matter.
  • August: a lively holiday atmosphere and high family demand in many resorts. Do not assume every attraction, beach or restaurant will be quiet or easy to book on arrival.
  • September: attractive to people travelling outside school holidays who still want beach weather. Some resorts become calmer; check whether facilities and seasonal flights operate throughout your dates.

A better question than “Which month is cheapest?” is “Which week delivers the holiday I want for the total cost?” If you're comparing a late-June trip with an August one, compare equivalent hotels, board basis, room occupancy and duration. Our guide to travelling outside the summer school holidays covers the trade-offs in more detail.

Heat is not automatically a holiday benefit

In Mediterranean destinations, the hottest weeks may be uncomfortable for long city walks or small children, even though they look ideal on a temperature chart. If you are visiting Dubrovnik's walls, the streets of Seville on an excursion, or ruins on Crete, consider morning visits, water, regular breaks and shade. The European Commission's guidance on extreme heat explains why heatwaves need to be taken seriously. Check the weather forecast and any local alerts shortly before travelling.

Six summer escapes from Manchester, and how to choose between them

1. The Algarve: dramatic beaches, but not every resort suits the same trip

The Algarve in southern Portugal is brilliant for a beach-and-food holiday, but it stretches far beyond one resort. Lagos appeals if you want an atmospheric old town, restaurants and access to striking coastal scenery. Albufeira has varied beach areas and a livelier evening scene in certain districts. Carvoeiro may suit people seeking a smaller, walkable seaside base. Your experience depends on your exact accommodation, not simply the Algarve label.

Useful distinction: Faro is the main airport for the Algarve, not the location of every package hotel. Check the actual resort and transfer before accepting a cheap-looking break. Also remember that the Atlantic Ocean can feel cooler than the Mediterranean, even when the air is hot. For outdoor walks or boat trips, check weather, sea conditions and operator arrangements. Use official Portugal tourism information and our Portugal seasonal guide when deciding when to go.

2. Mallorca: the same island can give you three very different holidays

For a straightforward family beach stay, look closely at Alcúdia and Playa de Muro, where wide beaches and shallower areas may be attractive for children; sea conditions still vary, and adult supervision remains essential. For a city-meets-sea trip, Palma offers the old town, cultural sights and restaurants, with beaches accessible nearby. For harbour views and a different resort atmosphere, explore Port de Sóller, taking travel time and terrain into account.

Do not just book “Mallorca”. A family after a quiet early dinner and easy beach access should check more than the star rating of a hotel in a lively area. The Balearic tourism authority provides information on Mallorca's beaches, including distinct coastal areas. Our Spain by season guide may also help if your dates are flexible.

3. Dubrovnik: incredible scenery, but consider the crowds and the climbing

Dubrovnik in Croatia is a striking choice for travellers who want the sea, historic architecture and memorable evening walks rather than a conventional resort week. Its walled old town is beautiful but can be crowded, steep and exposed in high summer. Staying in or immediately beside the old town gives easy sightseeing access, while areas such as Lapad can provide a different balance of beaches and accommodation.

Consider this before booking: accommodation marked “near the old town” may involve significant steps. Check the property's access details if travelling with pushchairs, mobility requirements or substantial luggage. Research walking conditions, cruise-ship congestion and attraction booking information through the Dubrovnik tourist board. For a seven-night trip, leave days for swimming or a boat excursion rather than treating every day as a city tour.

4. Málaga: the city itself is not the same as a Costa del Sol resort

Málaga makes an interesting summer holiday for people who want galleries, tapas, beach time and evening walks without always needing a car. If you choose accommodation in the city, you can explore its historic centre, museums and waterfront. A package to the wider Costa del Sol might instead place you in Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola or another resort, with a different journey and atmosphere.

One genuinely useful decision: compare hotel location and transfer time, not just flight time. If you plan to spend most of the holiday exploring Málaga, a cheaper hotel much farther down the coast could cost you hours in travel. A family seeking pools and beach days may reach the opposite conclusion. The official Andalucía tourism site is a good starting point for exploring the region.

5. Menorca: slower island days, with a catch about hidden coves

Menorca can be especially appealing if your ideal summer involves sheltered swimming spots, smaller towns and time outdoors. Son Bou is worth comparing for its long sandy beach, while areas around Cala Galdana or Cala en Bosch may suit travellers who want beaches and resort facilities. But the island's celebrated coves are not necessarily all next to roads, and some involve walking or limited parking.

Before choosing a hotel because of a photograph of a turquoise cove, find out how you would actually reach that beach. Official Balearic information explains the differences between Menorca's northern and southern coasts. For a family, the practicalities of shade, access, toilets and transport can matter more than finding the least-visited bay.

6. Crete: excellent for a longer holiday, if you respect the distances

Crete has enough variety for a longer stay: beaches, historic sites, mountains, villages and memorable food. But it is a large island, and Chania and Heraklion are not interchangeable arrival points or accommodation areas. If you want western Crete's coastal scenery, a hotel or flight further east may add substantial travel. If Knossos or the central island is your priority, another base might make more sense.

Choose a region before choosing a star rating. Ask whether you actually want a self-contained beachfront resort, an old-town stay or a base for hiring a car. Consider the heat when visiting archaeological sites and do not overfill a seven-night trip with long drives. The Greek tourism authority's Crete guide can help you explore the island beyond the hotel. Our Greece seasonal guide covers the broader timing decision.

Unexpected options worth looking at from Manchester

If your usual shortlist is Mallorca, Málaga and the Algarve, consider exploring somewhere new. Manchester Airport's 2026 summer route announcement highlighted destinations such as Bari, Montpellier, Preveza and Jerez. They are interesting alternatives for Italian food and coastline, southern France, access to the Ionian coast or Andalusian culture respectively.

That is route inspiration, not a claim of live package availability. Some routes operate only on particular days or during part of the season. A package from Manchester to one of these places may not be present in the TripsByDate feed on your dates. Browse first, then verify the departure day, actual arrival airport and full provider itinerary.

Find holidays by departure date

Travelling from Manchester Airport in summer: what has changed?

For readers in Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Lancashire, Merseyside and Yorkshire, summer holiday planning starts before the aircraft takes off. Compare your full journey to the airport with the departure time, especially if you are travelling with children or have booked a very early flight.

Terminal 1 is closed: do not use last year's terminal assumptions

Manchester Airport closed Terminal 1 in March 2026. Its published terminal guidance now directs Ryanair to Terminal 3 and other listed carriers to Terminal 2. However, the operating airline and your booking confirmation should be the final source for your actual flight. Check the airport's current terminal and security information before booking parking or arranging a drop-off.

Don't assume the fastest-looking airport journey will work at 4am

Manchester Airport has its own railway station, with services from Manchester Piccadilly and wider regional connections. Train travel can be convenient, but the first and last services, engineering works and connections matter. For an early flight from Liverpool, Bolton, Preston, Warrington, Stockport or further afield, check the exact journey on National Rail. An airport hotel or pre-booked parking may sometimes be more practical than a journey involving multiple early connections.

Value tip: compare the round-trip cost for the whole party. Four rail tickets are not always better value than parking, but parking prices and congestion vary too. Include the return journey after a late landing, especially if children will be tired.

Manchester still has a 100ml security liquids rule

Despite upgraded scanners, Manchester Airport's published security guidance states that standard liquid containers in cabin baggage must be under 100ml each. Small liquids and electronics can generally remain in your bag for screening. Do not confuse that rule with an airline's separate cabin-baggage allowance, and check the rules at the airport you will fly home from too. Larger bottles of sun cream may be better suited to checked baggage.

How to make a summer holiday genuinely good value

The cheapest advertised package is not automatically the best buy. For summer holidays, the big differences often hide in room occupancy, children's ages, transfers, baggage and the cost of eating out.

  1. Compare total family cost, not just price per person. A family room, extra child bed or different child age band can affect the quote. Confirm the exact room configuration and whether everyone gets a real bed.
  2. Check seven nights against ten. Longer trips can occasionally offer better value per day, but not always a cheaper total. Also compare the usable first and last day; a very late arrival and early return can change the value substantially.
  3. Calculate the board-basis trade-off. All-inclusive can be convenient for families spending a lot of time at a resort. Bed and breakfast may work better if you plan to explore and dine out. Compare what is actually included, including drinks, snacks and speciality restaurants.
  4. Look at the beach, not just the pool. Check whether the nearest beach is walkable, sandy, steep, rocky or separated by a busy road. For families, find out whether there is shade and whether lifeguards operate in season.
  5. Account for local charges. Some destinations charge visitor or accommodation taxes, and certain extras are payable locally. Check supplier terms and the destination's official guidance.
  6. Check the final package details with the seller. Confirm baggage, seats, airport transfers, resort, arrival airport, refund conditions and financial protection. Use ATOL's official verification service when applicable, and consult GOV.UK foreign travel advice for passport and entry requirements.

TripsByDate makes it easy to return regularly and see what departure dates and destinations have appeared in the feed. It does not guarantee the market's cheapest price or hold availability, so always make the final comparison with the operator. Summer holiday questions from Manchester travellers

Do I need to book summer holidays from Manchester very early?

Not always. Booking earlier may improve choice for a particular hotel, room type or school-holiday date; it does not guarantee the lowest price. If your dates and destination are flexible, browsing departures regularly can reveal alternatives. If you need a specific accessible room or adjoining family accommodation, availability may be a more important consideration than a supposed booking trick.

Where is best for a family summer holiday from Manchester?

There is no universal winner. Mallorca and Menorca offer many family-friendly beach locations; Crete and the Algarve can be excellent with the right base. Check the actual beach access, pool supervision, transfer time, room layout and child-friendly food options, rather than judging an entire destination by one advert. Our family holiday timing guide may help you decide between months.

Is June or September better than August?

For travellers who are not tied to school holidays, June and September may offer a calmer experience at some resorts. Weather, water temperatures, flights and facilities all vary by destination. August can be ideal for families and people who enjoy lively resorts, provided they prepare for demand and possible high temperatures.

Can I get a summer holiday departing from Manchester this week?

There may be upcoming departures in the participating provider feed, but suitability and live availability depend on the exact date and package. Browse last-minute holidays from Manchester for short-notice planning advice, then check passports, entry requirements and the seller's current terms before committing.

Should I book a package or arrange flights and hotels separately?

Compare the full cost and what you gain. A flight-inclusive package may offer a simpler booking process and applicable ATOL protection. Separate bookings may make sense for a particular itinerary, but you must consider transfers, changes and the different protections. Our package versus separate-booking guide explains the main distinctions.

Does this page only display summer holidays?

No. Its featured listings are filtered by Manchester Airport, not by a summer-month or destination category, so you may see other dates and trips. That is intentional: the broader selection helps you discover other ideas. Check each departure date before assuming it suits your summer plans.

Your next Manchester summer escape starts with a date

Maybe your perfect holiday is a relaxed Menorca beach week. Maybe it is a Crete road trip, seafood in the Algarve or evenings overlooking Dubrovnik's harbour. The point is not to visit the destination everybody else chooses. It is to find the holiday that fits your free time, budget and travel style.
