Summer Holidays from Gatwick
One departure airport. Six very different kinds of summer. Discover how to choose the right beach, neighbourhood and hotel base, and how to avoid wasting a precious holiday on awkward transfers or the wrong resort.

Before choosing a destination, choose the holiday you actually want
A beautiful coastline does not tell you what a week's holiday will feel like. Barcelona's city beaches, the pebble beaches of Nice, a quiet Majorcan bay and a sprawling Cretan resort have very different rhythms. Gatwick gives you plenty of opportunities to explore, but the best choice is the one that fits your group, dates and appetite for travelling around once you arrive.
Start with three questions: Do you want to explore or stay put? How much heat do you enjoy? And how far from the arrival airport are you prepared to travel? The answers matter more than whether one destination has a slightly prettier photograph. If you have children or limited annual leave, they can make the difference between an easy getaway and a tiring one.
TripsByDate is built to make the discovery stage quicker. Select London Gatwick (LGW) and browse advertised package holidays in departure-date order. You can scroll through places and dates without committing to a destination first, return for a quick look when your plans change and follow a promising holiday to the actual provider. We show participating providers' listings, not every holiday in the market; the provider confirms availability, price and booking terms. For another way to explore new places, try our destination map.

Six summer destinations: pick the right base, not just the right country
Barcelona: choose city energy, not a conventional beach resort
Barcelona combines architecture, food, neighbourhoods and urban beaches in a way that suits active couples, friends and older families. It is particularly good when you want a beach morning and a memorable city evening. But this is an international city, not a small seaside resort: allow for crowds, city traffic, busy attractions and accommodation that may be some distance from the beach.
Where to stay: Eixample is practical for architecture and connections; Poblenou can suit visitors who want to be closer to the seaside while remaining in the city; the Gothic Quarter is atmospheric but can be noisy and less convenient with luggage. Check the exact address rather than relying on the label “Barcelona”. If beach time is your priority throughout the week, compare resorts outside the city instead.
An easily missed cost: Barcelona applies accommodation taxes that depend on lodging category and booking details. Check whether the quoted package price includes local payments at the property. The Catalan tax authority publishes the applicable rates. Summer cultural attractions may also need timed tickets; the official Barcelona tourism site is a sensible planning starting point. For a more concentrated city visit, see our three-night Gatwick city-break guide.
Crete: make the arrival airport part of the decision
Crete can be a beach holiday, a road trip, a food adventure or a blend of all three. Its size is what makes it rewarding and what catches people out. A hotel described simply as “Crete” might be very far from the places you want to visit. Heraklion and Chania serve different parts of the island, and mountain roads can turn a seemingly short map distance into a much slower journey.
Choose the base deliberately: around Chania and the west suits travellers interested in the Venetian harbour and western beaches; Rethymno offers a historic town with a beach; the north-coast resort areas near Heraklion are convenient for many established package hotels. The south coast can feel quieter and wilder, but is not necessarily the easiest choice without a car.
Unexpected practical tip: do not schedule a famous remote beach on your very first afternoon. Wind, parking, roads and the journey itself can take more time than expected. For families with young children, a nearby, sheltered beach and a hotel pool may beat an ambitious daily excursion. Use the Greek National Tourism Organisation's Crete guide for destination inspiration and check the route from your specific airport before paying.
Nice: a French Riviera holiday that can work without a hire car
Nice is a clever choice for people who want colourful markets, museums, restaurants and sea views, plus the option of exploring neighbouring Riviera towns. Its beaches are predominantly pebbly rather than the soft sandy stretches some travellers expect. Pack suitable water shoes if swimming comfort matters.
Why the logistics matter: Nice Airport's tram line 2 links both terminals with the city and Port Lympia in under 30 minutes. Nice-Saint-Augustin railway station also connects to regional rail. That makes a car-free coast-and-culture holiday realistic. An apartment by a tram stop may be more convenient than a grander hotel that demands taxis for every outing.
A different way to plan: spend one day enjoying Nice itself and one using public transport along the coast instead of trying to drive and park in several Riviera hotspots. If you want a sandy beach every day, investigate the actual nearby beaches before booking; “French Riviera” alone does not guarantee your preferred beach experience. The official Nice Côte d'Azur tourism office covers sightseeing and coastal activities.

Dubrovnik: spectacular history, but plan around midsummer heat and crowds
The old city walls and Adriatic views make Dubrovnik unforgettable, yet that famous walled centre can be exceptionally busy in peak summer. The key decision is whether you want to stay close to the old town for early and late walks or at a beach-focused hotel where you can retreat from the crowds.
Where to stay: Ploče can suit people who prioritise old-town access and views, although hills and steps matter. Lapad is an alternative for a more traditional seaside stay with restaurants and promenades. Accommodation farther along the coast may work well for quiet holidays, but check buses and transfers if you plan to visit the old city repeatedly.
Do the iconic sight differently: consider walking the walls earlier in the day, carrying water and checking the official ticket and opening information before you go. Shoes with grip are helpful on polished stone, especially in hot weather. Check the Dubrovnik Tourist Board for local visitor information. Also compare beach access: a spectacular cliffside sea view does not necessarily mean a gentle walk to a sandy beach.
Palma and Mallorca: one island, several completely different holidays
Palma is Mallorca's capital, with restaurants, architecture and waterfront walks. It is not the same holiday as booking an all-inclusive resort in Alcúdia, a quieter coastal village or a property deep in the island's interior. Many packages fly into Palma de Mallorca Airport, but the accommodation location decides most of your holiday experience.
For families: Alcúdia and nearby Playa de Muro have extensive sandy beachfronts and established tourist facilities; the official Balearic Islands guide describes Alcúdia's different beach sections. For adults who want variety: Palma can make a strong food-and-culture base. For scenery: villages and coves elsewhere on the island may reward exploration, but expect more complex drives and parking in popular summer spots.
Useful question before booking: will you actually use a hire car? If not, choose a resort with walkable restaurants, suitable beaches and reliable transport. If you will drive, check parking at the hotel and avoid building an itinerary around more than one remote cove per day. Our Spain-by-season guide helps with the bigger weather and timing picture.
Faro and the Algarve: the airport is not necessarily the holiday destination
Faro Airport is the entry point to a long, varied coastline. Faro itself has a historic town and access to Ria Formosa, but holidays advertised under “Faro” or “Algarve” can be based far to the east or west. That can change the cost of transfers, whether you need a car and what your local beach is like.
Choose your Algarve: Lagos and the western area suit people drawn to dramatic cliffs, coves and boat trips; Albufeira is useful for people wanting a lively holiday scene, although different parts are very different after dark; Tavira and the eastern Algarve offer a slower pace, with some beaches reached by ferry or boat. Portugal's tourism authority explains the differences between the coast's beaches and resort areas.
Often overlooked: a photograph of golden cliffs may not tell you how to reach the beach beneath them. Look for steps, accessible paths, parking and whether the nearest beach is suitable for children or people with reduced mobility. The Algarve faces the Atlantic, so do not assume its sea feels as warm as the Mediterranean in every summer month. Read our Portugal-by-month guide when deciding between early summer and late season.
Summer holidays: the decisions that actually save money
Compare a full holiday, not just the number on the first card
Suppose two packages have similar headline prices. One is seven nights near a sandy beach with airport transfers included. The other is ten nights with a cheaper room but requires an expensive taxi, extra luggage and daily transport. The longer holiday could still be wonderful, but only once you compare like for like.
- Accommodation and occupancy: price the exact number of adults and children, room type, bed arrangements and air conditioning. A basic room can be poor value if it is too cramped for a family.
- Board basis: compare self-catering, breakfast, half-board and all-inclusive against how you genuinely plan to eat. Do not buy all-inclusive if you expect to explore local restaurants every day.
- Transfers: check whether included transfers are shared, their estimated duration and where the vehicle drops you. A “nearby” resort can take longer when a coach visits several hotels.
- Local charges: city or tourist taxes, parking, beach clubs and some activities may not be included in the advertised package.
- Airport costs: compare rail, parking, taxi and bag fees for the whole party, not only the price per passenger.
For further detail, our package-holiday booking checklist covers what to confirm with a seller, and the package-versus-separate-booking guide explains why the cheaper-looking option may not always be better.
June, July, August or September: judge the holiday experience
June can be attractive for sightseeing and trips before the main UK school-holiday period, but sea temperatures vary across coasts. July and August bring classic summer atmosphere and, in many Mediterranean locations, serious heat and demand. September may suit adults wanting warm water and fewer school-age children around, though individual services and seasonal routes can start winding down later in the month. None of these months is automatically the cheapest.
A useful Gatwick trick: if your leave allows it, compare midweek departures and alternative trip lengths as well as weekend-to-weekend packages. A Thursday departure or an extra night can change the available flight-and-hotel combinations. TripsByDate makes these nearby dates easier to browse, but you still need to check provider prices and availability. See our guide to European beach seasons for a broader comparison.
Peak summer heat should change your itinerary
If you are visiting an exposed historic site, city streets or rocky coastal paths in a hot spell, plan walks early or later in the day, book appropriate indoor breaks and carry water. Afternoon sightseeing in Barcelona, Dubrovnik or inland Crete is not the same as sitting beside a shaded swimming pool. Use local forecasts and heat alerts rather than relying only on historical monthly averages.
Getting to Gatwick without making the holiday harder
Gatwick works for travellers from London, Surrey, Sussex, Kent and beyond, but the practical journey changes depending on where you start. The airport has North and South Terminals; always verify your operating airline and terminal on the booking. Gatwick confirms its rail station is at South Terminal, with a free inter-terminal shuttle for North Terminal passengers. Budget for walking, waiting and luggage as well as the shuttle itself.
From Brighton, Crawley or parts of Sussex: investigate direct rail services rather than automatically routing through London. From London: compare suitable Southern, Thameslink or Gatwick Express journeys by time, stops and price. Check your actual travel-date timetable, especially for dawn flights, Sunday engineering work and late returns. The official Gatwick rail guidance is the best first stop.
Being dropped off? Gatwick's terminal-front drop-off areas charge a fee, but the airport offers up to two hours' free parking in Long Stay with a shuttle to the terminals. This may save money for someone giving you a lift, but it needs more time. If you are parking throughout your holiday, compare the entire stay rather than a headline daily price.
Security note: Gatwick currently permits liquids in individual containers of up to two litres, subject to container restrictions. The airport's official security page has the details. Airline cabin-bag allowances are separate, and your return airport may still impose different liquid limits. Check both ends before packing your summer toiletries.

Which destination is best for a family beach holiday?
Look first at the specific beach and accommodation, not the country. Mallorca's Alcúdia area has extensive sandy beaches and family facilities, while Crete and the Algarve offer many suitable resorts with very different transfers and beach access. Choose the hotel and local area that suit your children, mobility needs and budget.
Is Nice a good alternative to a traditional resort holiday?
Yes if you enjoy restaurants, urban culture, seaside walks and exploring by public transport. It is less suitable if your main requirement is a sandy beach directly beside an all-inclusive resort. Nice's beaches are mostly pebbly, and the city itself is a major part of the attraction.
Should I book a package or separate flights and accommodation?
Compare both using the same dates, location, baggage, transfers and cancellation terms. Package holidays may provide useful legal protections where applicable, but their inclusions vary. Check the seller and CAA ATOL guidance; also arrange suitable travel insurance.
Are August departures from Gatwick always more expensive?
No universal rule applies to every route, hotel and day. Demand around school holidays can be strong, but compare real prices on your possible dates rather than assuming a particular week is cheaper. Consider the full cost for the number of travellers.
Can I browse holidays without choosing a destination first?
Yes. On TripsByDate, select Gatwick and scroll through the advertised packages organised by departure date. The feed covers participating providers, and some combinations may not appear; confirm the final offer with the holiday operator.
What should I check for a last-minute summer booking?
Confirm passport and destination entry requirements through UK government travel advice, booking confirmation, luggage, accommodation details, airport transfers and appropriate insurance. For short-notice planning, see our last-minute Gatwick holiday guide.
