SAVING MONEY AND COMPARING HOLIDAYS

What Should I Check Before Booking a Cheap Package Holiday?

A low advertised price is a great place to start, but it is not the whole story. Find promising package holidays quickly with TripsByDate, then check what you are actually buying before you book.

First, find holidays worth comparing

Traditionally, looking for a bargain can mean filling in search forms, checking one destination, changing the dates and repeating the whole process. That is especially frustrating when you are happy to go to several different countries.

TripsByDate makes the discovery stage simpler. Choose your departure airport, click through the available dates and scan package holiday listings in a consistent format. You can quickly see advertised prices, destinations and trip details without searching each country separately. If you have flexibility, browsing neighbouring departure dates may reveal more attractive options too.

The aim is to make finding holidays feel quick and effortless. Once you spot something appealing, it is time to look more closely at the offer.

1. Check whether the price is per person or for the whole booking

A price can look unusually low if it is displayed per person but the holiday requires two people sharing a room. Check the number of travellers, room occupancy and the total payable amount. Make sure you are comparing like with like before deciding which holiday is cheapest.

2. Check exactly what the package includes

A package normally combines travel services, but the details differ between offers. Confirm the flights, accommodation, number of nights, room type and any included extras. Do not assume airport transfers, checked baggage or meals are included just because another package holiday offers them.

3. Look closely at flight times and airports

An early outbound flight might give you more time at your destination. A late arrival could mean you spend much of the first day travelling. Check the exact departure and arrival airports, flight times, connections and whether the return flight fits your plans.

If you are comparing seven-night holidays, remember that identical durations do not always give you the same amount of usable time away.

4. Check baggage, transfers and other extras

Baggage allowances can differ even between similar-looking packages. Check cabin and hold luggage, transfer arrangements and any compulsory charges shown during booking. Optional extras such as selected seats can also change what you eventually spend.

The important question is not just "Which listing has the lowest starting price?" but "Which holiday gives me what I need for the lowest total cost?"

5. Compare the hotel and board basis

Self-catering, bed and breakfast, half-board and all-inclusive holidays can have very different total costs once you arrive. Compare the hotel location, room type, facilities and meal arrangements. A higher-priced package may make better financial sense if it includes more of what you plan to use.

6. Check the location, not just the destination name

Two holidays advertised for the same resort or region may put you in very different locations. Look at the hotel on a map and consider the distance to the beach, restaurants, public transport and anything else you want to do. A cheap hotel far from the places you intend to visit may lead to extra transport costs.

7. Check booking conditions and financial protection

Before paying, read the travel provider's terms, payment schedule, amendment rules and cancellation conditions. If booking from the UK, check whether the trip is ATOL-protected where applicable, and confirm who is organising the package. Protection arrangements depend on the type of booking and the provider, so do not assume every travel listing has the same cover.

You can learn more through the official ATOL website. Consider suitable travel insurance too, including the activities and circumstances relevant to your trip.

8. Confirm the final price and availability with the provider

Package holiday prices and availability can change. The listing that caught your eye is a useful starting point, not a guarantee of the final checkout price. Confirm the full cost, inclusions and available dates on the supplier's booking page before you commit.

How does TripsByDate help you compare cheaper holidays?

TripsByDate removes much of the effort from the first part of holiday hunting. Rather than deciding on a country, completing a long search and doing it all over again, you can browse date by date from your chosen airport. Listings from different travel providers appear in a straightforward layout that is designed to make scanning and discovery easy.

That is the new approach we are building: a simple place to discover package holidays across more and more providers. Our long-term ambition is to bring together a much broader selection of holiday listings, without turning the experience into another complicated search engine.

TripsByDate shows the listings available on its platform. It does not claim to show every holiday or guarantee the cheapest offer on the market. What it does aim to do is make it far easier to spot options worth checking, including across multiple departure dates.

Do you book through TripsByDate?

No. TripsByDate is a holiday discovery and referral website, not the company that organises or takes your booking. When you choose a deal, you follow it to the relevant holiday provider, which confirms the current price, availability, inclusions and booking conditions. Where an affiliate partnership applies, TripsByDate may receive a referral commission.
