Weekend Breaks from Gatwick

Two or three nights can be enough for a memorable escape. The trick is choosing a trip that gives you more time exploring, eating and relaxing than travelling.

Weekend breaks from Gatwick infographic with Palma, Barcelona and Marrakech inspiration, weekend planning tips and travel styles

A free weekend is a chance to discover somewhere unexpected

Perhaps you have Friday off. Perhaps it is a bank-holiday weekend, or you can stretch your break until Tuesday. You know when you can travel but you are not committed to a destination. That is a good place to start.

TripsByDate is built around that moment. Choose Gatwick (LGW), browse advertised package holidays by departure date and see where your available days might take you. Instead of entering the same details into lots of destination-specific forms, you can dip in, scroll through possibilities and come back when another weekend opens up. We display listings collected from participating holiday operators, not every trip available in the market.

For a short break, resist choosing purely by the cheapest headline price. A late Friday arrival and an early Sunday departure can leave very little time away. Flight timing, airport access and the location of your hotel are part of the value.

Start with these four checks

  1. Look at neighbouring dates. Compare Friday–Monday with Saturday–Tuesday, or consider a Thursday departure if you can take an extra day off.
  2. Check usable hours. Note when you expect to reach your accommodation, and when you must leave it to get back to the airport.
  3. Shortlist places, not just prices. A central hotel with a simple transfer may be worth more than a lower-priced resort farther away.
  4. Verify everything with the operator. The final package price, flights, bags, transfers, protection and availability are confirmed by the provider, not TripsByDate.

Short holidays departing from Gatwick

These listings are filtered to Gatwick departures of 2–5 nights, with up to four packages shown in departure-date order. They are not limited to Friday departures and may include breaks beginning during the week. Use the departure and return dates to find one that genuinely fits your weekend.

Six Gatwick weekend ideas, each with a different feel

The destinations in our infographics offer a useful starting point, not a promise that each has a direct flight or suitable package on every weekend. Always check the actual airport, dates, route and flight schedule offered for your trip.

Palma: a Spanish city break with the sea close by

Palma is ideal when the group is divided between sightseeing and taking it easy. You can explore the cathedral and old-town lanes, spend time in cafés and walk beside the waterfront without arranging a journey across Mallorca. It is a different proposition from booking a beach resort on the other side of the island.

Make it work: for two nights, consider accommodation in Palma itself rather than choosing a distant resort because its photographs look tempting. A city base reduces transfers and keeps your evenings flexible. The official Palma tourism website provides local ideas, while Spain's tourism guide explains onward transport.

Barcelona: architecture, neighbourhoods and a properly full weekend

Barcelona rewards people who choose a theme instead of trying to see everything. Spend one day around the Gothic Quarter and El Born, another enjoying Gaudí's architecture, then make time for a leisurely meal. Popular sights can require advance timed bookings, so build your days around the one or two things you most want to experience.

Make it work: Barcelona-El Prat has several connections into the city, including Aerobús, rail and metro, but the best one depends on your terminal and hotel. The airport's public-transport choice is worth checking before buying accommodation; Spain's official Barcelona guide summarises the options. Staying by a convenient metro station is often more useful than paying to be beside a single attraction.

Marrakech: a big change of scene in just a few days

Marrakech offers an entirely different kind of getaway: busy souks, the medina, courtyard riads, gardens and Moroccan food. But a two-night escape here needs a little more planning than a familiar European city weekend. You will enjoy it more if arrival arrangements are sorted in advance.

Make it work: ask your riad whether a taxi can reach its entrance. Some accommodation inside the medina requires a walk from a drop-off point, which matters with luggage or after dark. The official Marrakech tourism transport guide covers airport transfers. Check UK government advice for Morocco for passport and entry rules before paying.

Lisbon: a three-night break for views, trams and long lunches

Lisbon suits a slower weekend: one morning in Alfama, an afternoon around the waterfront, a viewpoint at sunset and time for good food. The hills are part of its appeal but also make hotel location important, particularly for anyone travelling with heavy luggage or limited mobility.

Make it work: Lisbon Airport has a metro connection into the city network. Check whether your chosen neighbourhood requires a change, uphill walk or taxi after the metro. See Lisbon Airport's public transport guide. With only two nights, leave Sintra for another visit rather than sacrificing most of your time in Lisbon.

Nice: a coast-and-city escape without a long resort transfer

Nice has a useful combination for a short break: the Promenade des Anglais, the old town, markets, seafront views and restaurants. It can feel like a beach holiday without needing to spend your whole stay beside a hotel pool. Check the time of year if swimming is the main attraction.

Make it work: Nice Airport's official transport information confirms that tram line 2 connects both airport terminals with central Nice and Port Lympia. For a very short stay, a hotel near the tram route can be a practical choice. Trips along the Riviera are tempting, but do not overfill a two-night itinerary with Monaco, Cannes and several other stops.

Seville: tapas, beautiful streets and a slower pace

Seville is a lovely option for a food-and-culture weekend. Spend time around Santa Cruz, admire the cathedral area, explore the riverfront and make room for an evening meal without watching the clock. In hotter months, schedule outdoor sightseeing carefully and check temperatures before booking.

Make it work: Seville Airport's official EA airport bus guide explains the connection into the city. If you have a late arrival or very early flight, compare a taxi with the bus's operating times. The official Spanish tourism guide to Seville is useful for building a compact itinerary.

How long should a weekend break actually be?

Think in useful hours on the ground rather than nights in a hotel. These are rules of thumb, not guarantees:

  • Two nights: best when the airport transfer is straightforward, the hotel is well located and you can enjoy at least one full day.
  • Three nights: a strong option for Lisbon, Marrakech or a mix of sightseeing and relaxing. It gives you room to slow down.
  • Four or five nights: useful for a more distant hotel, a beach-and-city split or a longer stay without squeezing every activity into a schedule.

The Gatwick return-journey test: imagine arriving home on Sunday night. Can you still get your train, or collect your car without a costly extra journey? A slightly later Monday return may be more relaxing, but a very late arrival before work can also spoil the benefit. Compare your complete door-to-door schedule.

Getting to Gatwick: the detail that can save your weekend

Gatwick has good access from London and much of the South East, but the practical journey differs depending on whether you are coming from Brighton, Crawley, Surrey, Sussex, Kent or London itself. Check your own journey before choosing an early flight or a late return.

The railway station is at South Terminal

Gatwick Airport railway station is directly connected to South Terminal. If you fly from North Terminal, use the airport's free inter-terminal shuttle. Gatwick says the shuttle journey takes around two minutes, but leave time for getting to it and walking to your check-in area. See the airport's official train guide.

Gatwick Express, Southern and Thameslink provide different connections. Do not automatically choose Gatwick Express because it has the airport's name: compare its fare and route with other trains that serve your starting station. Travellers from Brighton or towns in Sussex may have a more convenient journey than travelling through central London. Use National Rail to check changes, engineering works and the last service home.

Late returns and Sunday engineering works matter

For a two-night trip, a cheap Sunday-night flight can look perfect until you discover your onward train is not running as expected. Check the actual date, not a typical weekday timetable. If you will rely on a connecting service from London or elsewhere, leave room for immigration, baggage reclaim and delays. A pre-booked car or taxi may be worth comparing for very late arrivals.

Dropping someone off? There is a free alternative

Gatwick charges for using its terminal-front drop-off zones. But its official guidance also offers up to two hours free in the Long Stay car parks, with a shuttle bus to the terminal. The trade-off is extra travel time, so it may not suit someone cutting their departure close. Read Gatwick's current drop-off rules before driving.

For a weekend away by car, compare the total cost of Long Stay parking, a taxi and public transport, including the return journey. If someone is meeting you, note that airport pick-up arrangements differ from drop-off; see Gatwick's pick-up guidance.

Gatwick cabin-bag and security tips for short trips

Travelling light can make a two-night break more convenient, especially if it means avoiding a checked-bag queue on arrival. But a cabin bag is not automatically included in every fare. A small under-seat bag and an overhead case are different products on some airlines, so check the operating airline's exact dimensions and charges.

Gatwick's published security guidance currently allows many liquids in individual containers of up to two litres, with restrictions for metal and double-walled containers. Its scanners generally allow compliant liquids to remain in hand luggage. Do not assume the airport you fly home from uses the same rules. Check both ends of the journey and read Gatwick's official security instructions shortly before departure.

Pack for the activity you have actually planned. Walking-friendly shoes may be more useful than an extra outfit in Lisbon or Seville; a light layer can be helpful on a coastal evening even when the daytime forecast looks inviting.

How to compare two weekend deals fairly

Imagine two trips at similar advertised prices. One lands near midnight and needs an hour-long transfer. The other arrives in time for dinner and has a hotel near the centre. The first is not necessarily better value just because its headline price is lower.

  1. Add the complete cost: advertised package, bags, airport parking or trains, destination transfers and any necessary extras.
  2. Compare usable time: estimate when you will arrive at your hotel and when you must leave on the last day.
  3. Check your base: city centre, beach resort and countryside hotel offer very different experiences, even when the destination name is the same.
  4. Check the seller: confirm final availability, what is included and any applicable package protection. The Civil Aviation Authority explains ATOL.
  5. Check the destination rules: use GOV.UK foreign travel advice for current entry requirements, passport rules and safety information.

Frequently asked questions about Gatwick weekend breaks

Can I get a two-night package holiday from Gatwick?

Sometimes, depending on participating operators and current inventory. This page shows matching 2–5-night package listings when available; it does not imply that every destination has a two-night package every week. You can also browse Gatwick departures by date to explore the wider selection.

Are Friday-to-Sunday breaks always the best option?

No. Friday–Monday, Thursday–Sunday or Saturday–Tuesday may provide better flight times or value. Compare the total price, the annual leave required and your usable hours away rather than assuming traditional weekend dates win.

Which Gatwick terminal should I use?

Gatwick has North and South Terminals. Your operating airline and flight determine which you need, so check your boarding pass and current airport guidance. The free shuttle connects the two terminals.

Can I reach Gatwick by train for a very early flight?

Possibly, but only if the first train and any connections get you there before your airline's check-in or bag-drop deadline. Do not assume a normal daytime service applies early on Sunday morning. Check the exact date and consider parking, a taxi or an airport hotel if needed.

Is Barcelona, Marrakech or Palma best for a short break?

It depends on the experience you want. Barcelona is well suited to culture and architecture, Marrakech to an immersive city adventure, and Palma to a blend of old town and waterfront. Flight timings and hotel location should help decide which works for your actual dates.

Does TripsByDate sell or guarantee these holidays?

No. TripsByDate helps you discover holidays from participating operators. Availability, final price, booking terms and protection must be confirmed with the provider. Missing listings here do not establish that a trip is sold out elsewhere.
