Holidays from Exeter Airport
Find beach breaks, city ideas and family holidays from Devon, with verified direct-route guidance and practical advice for travelling through Exeter Airport.

If you live in Devon, East Devon, Exeter or parts of Somerset and Cornwall, departing from Exeter Airport (EXT) can save a substantial journey to Bristol or a London airport. But a local departure is only good value if the dates, flight times and destination work for your holiday. This guide helps you separate genuinely available routes from inspirational destinations, choose a resort that suits your stay, and avoid surprises at the airport.
Our two infographics show Faro, Alicante, Málaga, Barcelona and Majorca. Exeter's published route information includes direct services to Faro, Alicante, Málaga and Majorca, although some are seasonal. Barcelona is not currently listed as a direct Exeter destination, so do not assume the flight-time illustration represents a bookable nonstop service. Use Exeter Airport's live Flights & Holidays directory and check your exact travel dates.
Which Exeter holiday fits the time you have?
- Three or four nights: Málaga city or Alicante can work as compact city-and-coast breaks, if the outbound and return flight days line up.
- Five to seven nights: Majorca and the Algarve reward taking time to explore beaches and different resort towns.
- Winter sunshine: look at the airport's actual Canary Islands programme, particularly Tenerife and Lanzarote, rather than assuming Mediterranean beach destinations stay warm all winter.
- Culture beyond the direct map: Barcelona and other European cities may be reachable with a connection, for example through Amsterdam, but compare total travel time and ticket protection with direct flights from other airports.
Start with departure dates, not a destination promise
Routes from a smaller airport may operate only on certain days, and an advertised direct route can still be seasonal. A two-night escape is not useful if the next flight home leaves in a week's time. Choose the dates you can travel, compare usable time at the destination, and then assess prices for complete packages. Exeter's published destination directory is the place to verify current route availability.

Five destinations in the images: what really works from Exeter?
1. Faro and the Algarve: choose the right coast
Faro Airport serves far more than Faro town. Albufeira offers a busy holiday atmosphere and familiar resorts; Lagos suits old-town evenings, boat trips and striking coves; Tavira has a quieter feel and access to the Ria Formosa's barrier-island beaches. For a short break, compare transfer durations before being tempted by a low hotel price. A room far from your chosen part of the coast can cost you valuable hours.
Exeter-specific timing: Faro has appeared in the airport's seasonal Ryanair programme. Check whether the service runs in your chosen month and whether departures suit a three- or seven-night stay. The Algarve is excellent for walking and sightseeing in spring and autumn, but do not assume the Atlantic is warm enough for lengthy swims outside summer. For local ideas see the Algarve's official tourism guide and our Portugal timing guide.
2. Alicante and the Costa Blanca: a city break or a resort week?
Alicante itself is a practical base for a short escape: the old town, Explanada promenade, seafront and Santa Bárbara Castle are close enough to combine over a few days. Travellers wanting a traditional resort holiday may instead prefer areas such as Benidorm or quieter Costa Blanca towns. Those choices involve different transfers and hotel styles, so compare them separately.
Route advantage: Alicante is included in Exeter's published year-round programme, although individual flight dates can still change. That makes it worth checking for winter city breaks as well as summer holidays. For winter travel, plan for cooler evenings rather than expecting beach weather every day. Visit the Valencian Community's official guide for attractions and resort information.

3. Málaga: make the airport-to-hotel journey count
Flying to Málaga opens up two very different holidays. Stay in Málaga city for galleries, food markets, the old town and easy evenings by the sea, or continue to a resort on the Costa del Sol. Torremolinos and Fuengirola can be convenient for shorter stays, while Marbella and Nerja offer different atmospheres but may add road time. For young families, check the real transfer rather than relying on a generic 'Costa del Sol' hotel description.
Málaga is on Exeter's year-round published direct-flight schedule. Spring and autumn can be particularly comfortable for exploring; summer brings busy beaches and potentially intense heat. See Andalusia's official visitor website and our Spain travel-season guide.
4. Majorca: good for families, but not all resorts are close to Palma
Majorca offers everything from Palma's historic centre and restaurants to beaches around Playa de Muro, Alcúdia and Cala d'Or. If you're travelling for three or four nights, a long coach transfer after a late arrival may undermine the value of a cheap deal. If you have a week, travelling farther from Palma Airport may be worthwhile for a particular beach or hotel.
Exeter's published Mallorca service is seasonal, so check the exact operating weeks, not just whether the island appears in a route list. Families should also verify hotel pools, kids' clubs and restaurant opening dates at the start and end of the season. The official Balearic Islands guide is useful for exploring areas beyond the beach resorts.
5. Barcelona: inspiring, but check the connection
Barcelona appears in the images because it's a great mix of culture, food and urban beaches. But it is not currently a listed direct destination from Exeter. Before booking, compare a possible connecting itinerary with a direct departure from Bristol Airport or another suitable airport. A connection that adds several hours may not be sensible for a two-night break.
If Barcelona is the goal, plan major attractions in advance using the official Sagrada Família tickets and Park Güell information. Always check whether two flight legs are sold on one protected booking or as separate tickets; self-connecting may mean collecting baggage, clearing security again and accepting additional disruption risk.
Getting to Exeter Airport: the Devon-specific choices
By bus or train
There is no railway station inside Exeter Airport's terminal. If travelling by rail to Exeter St Davids, Exeter Central or another station, plan the onward road connection. Public-bus routes and timetables change, particularly around Sundays, bank holidays and early-morning departures. Check the airport's transport information and Stagecoach's current journey planner for your actual departure and return dates.
For an early flight: compare the first usable bus with your airline's bag-drop deadline, not the flight departure time. A taxi or airport hotel may be more sensible than risking a missed check-in. If travelling from Torbay, Plymouth, Barnstaple or rural Devon, allow for the complete journey, including traffic and any change of transport.
Drop-off and parking: P4 and P1 are not interchangeable
Exeter Airport currently offers up to 30 minutes free in Car Park P4 for drop-off or pick-up. The closer Car Park P1, opposite the main terminal, is chargeable, with different tariffs. Don't stop on the terminal approach road. Check the official car park tariff and location guide before travelling because charges can change.
A useful collection tip: check whether the arriving passenger will exit at the main terminal or Arrivals 2, which is reached via the P2 side. The airport's live arrivals page explains the different arrivals arrangements. For longer stays, compare prebooked P1–P4 options on total cost, walking distance and baggage convenience, not simply the advertised daily price.
Security at Exeter: don't follow rules from a different airport
Exeter currently retains traditional cabin-baggage screening requirements. Liquids must be in containers no larger than 100ml in a single transparent, resealable bag of no more than one litre, and large electrical items must be presented separately at security. That's different from some UK airports with newer procedures. Read Exeter Airport's published passenger-security instructions just before you travel.
Medicines, baby food and medical equipment may have separate rules or exemptions. Don't mistake the airport's screening rules for your airline's cabin bag size limits. Check the return airport too, which may apply different requirements.
How to make a regional departure genuinely better value
- Count usable days, not advertised nights: a three-night break with an evening arrival and early return can leave limited time to explore.
- Calculate the cost from home: add airport travel, parking, bags, resort transfers and meals before comparing Exeter against Bristol.
- Check flight frequency: a route operating twice weekly may force a four-night or seven-night stay rather than the weekend you imagined.
- Check seasonal hotel facilities: a swimming pool, restaurant or kids' club featured in photographs may not operate every month.
- Compare package protection: ask whether the flight-inclusive booking is ATOL protected and what happens if a flight is rescheduled. See the Civil Aviation Authority's ATOL advice.
- Consider a connection only if worth it: Amsterdam can open up other destinations from Exeter, but build in comfortable connection time and understand whether the whole trip is on one ticket.
