Holidays from Cardiff Airport
Explore beaches, winter sunshine and city escapes from Wales, with verified local airport tips, direct-route advice and ways to compare complete holiday costs.

For travellers across South Wales, choosing Cardiff Airport can mean starting a holiday close to home rather than committing to an additional road or rail journey to Bristol or London. The airport serves beach holidays, family packages and selected city escapes, but the smartest choice depends on which flights actually operate on your dates, how you will reach the terminal and the full holiday price.
This guide looks at Faro, Tenerife and Prague, the three places pictured in our infographics, while explaining an important difference: Faro and Tenerife appear on Cardiff Airport’s published direct-destination list; Prague does not currently appear as a direct route. The official Cardiff Airport destination directory is the right place to recheck as the network changes.
Which Cardiff holiday fits your dates?
- For a sunny Algarve week: Faro gives access to sandy beaches, family resorts, scenic cliffs and relaxed coastal towns. Your resort location determines the transfer time.
- For sunshine beyond the Mediterranean summer: Tenerife is useful for winter-sun searches, but choose north or south according to the conditions and kind of holiday you want.
- For a culture-filled weekend: Prague is an attractive idea, but currently needs a separate route check or an alternative departure airport; never assume the infographic establishes a nonstop Cardiff flight.
- For more ideas: the airport also lists destinations including Alicante, Málaga, Palma, Lanzarote and Amsterdam. Some routes operate only on certain days or seasons.
Browse the dates you can actually travel
A smaller route network makes the departure day especially important. A four-night holiday can be excellent value if the flights fit, while a seven-night search can miss a convenient five-night package. Compare your school holidays, weekends and annual leave first, then consider several destinations rather than locking yourself into one airport-and-resort combination.

These changing package listings are filtered to Cardiff (CWL). They may feature destinations other than Faro, Tenerife or Prague and are not necessarily available for every date. Confirm the actual flights, package inclusions and final price with the provider.
Three destination ideas: what to know before booking
1. Faro and the Algarve: decide which coast you actually want
Faro is the arrival airport, not a single resort. Albufeira has a large choice of beach accommodation and restaurants; Lagos suits dramatic coastline, an appealing old town and independent exploring; Tavira offers a quieter, more traditional experience, with some beaches reached by boat or ferry. Check the exact hotel location before deciding a headline package is good value.
Family tip: check whether the beach has steps or boat access, whether your pool is heated in spring, and whether children’s facilities operate on your travel dates. Short-break tip: on a three- or four-night trip, reducing the transfer can be more useful than saving a small amount on a distant hotel.
The Algarve is especially appealing for outdoor activities and sightseeing in spring and autumn. The Atlantic sea can remain cool even when afternoons feel warm. Explore resort areas and nature activities through Portugal’s official tourism guide, and compare seasons with our Portugal travel-timing guide.
2. Tenerife: choose a climate and resort, not merely an island
Tenerife is a strong option for people departing Wales in search of sunshine outside high summer. The island has varied conditions: the southern resorts generally suit travellers prioritising reliable warmth and hotel pools, while the greener north offers a different atmosphere, gardens and towns. Higher ground, including the Teide area, can be much cooler than the coast.
Choosing a base: Costa Adeje is often suitable for families and resort facilities, Los Cristianos has a walkable waterfront and restaurants, while Puerto de la Cruz is appealing for gardens and local atmosphere but has different weather. Never assume an all-island temperature represents the hotel’s actual area.
Check the flight day and duration: Tenerife is farther than a mainland European city, so a short trip can lose a meaningful proportion of its time to travel. For a five- or seven-night holiday, compare flight times, transfers and board basis as well as price. See Tenerife’s official visitor information and our winter-sun guide.

3. Prague: an inspiring city break, but verify the itinerary
Prague works well for two or three usable days: explore the Old Town, Charles Bridge, Malá Strana and the castle district without trying to pack every museum into a single afternoon. A central, walkable hotel can save more time than a cheaper room requiring repeated transfers.
Important Cardiff route check: although Prague appears in our inspiration images, it is not currently listed as a direct Cardiff destination. You may need a connecting itinerary or to compare departures from Bristol Airport or another airport. Confirm that any connection is protected on one booking; separately ticketed flights can create missed-connection and baggage risks.
Seasonal tip: winter brings atmospheric streets and festive events but cold weather; spring and early autumn are attractive for exploring on foot. Check the official Prague tourism website for current attractions and events before committing to a timed activity.
Getting to Cardiff Airport from South Wales
By rail: Rhoose station is not the terminal
Rhoose Cardiff International Airport station is separate from the terminal. Rail passengers normally need an onward road transfer. A connecting 905 bus has served the station and airport, but you should verify both its current timetable and the train arrival before setting out. A train ticket to Rhoose does not mean your journey ends at the departure doors.
Check live connections through Transport for Wales and local journey-planning information. For early flights, verify the first available departure and the onward link, or compare a taxi or pre-flight stay if public transport would be too tight.
By bus: check the 304 rather than assuming an express coach
The 304 bus has linked Cardiff, Barry and surrounding communities with the airport, but stopping patterns and timetables can change. Check the Traveline Cymru journey planner and operator information for your departure day. The airport is in the Vale of Glamorgan, so build in road travel time from Cardiff city centre, Newport, Bridgend or farther west.
Driving, drop-off and parking: know the free option
Cardiff Airport offers two different drop-off arrangements. The terminal-front Drop Off Zone is chargeable. By contrast, Car Park 2 currently allows the first 20 minutes free for pick-up and drop-off. Use the signposted area and do not stop on approach roads. Both locations and charges can change, so check the official drop-off instructions before travelling.
If you are leaving a car for a holiday, compare Car Park 1, Car Park 2 and other official options through Cardiff Airport’s parking guide. Factor in the walk to the terminal, parking dates, flight arrival time and flexibility if your return is delayed. A lower daily price is only good value if it works for your family and baggage.
Cardiff Airport security: the rule to remember
Cardiff’s next-generation scanners allow permitted liquids and electronics to remain in your hand luggage during security screening. However, the airport still states that liquids must be in containers of 100ml or less. Keeping an item in your bag does not mean larger bottles are permitted. See the airport’s current security rules and check the return airport separately.
Check your airline’s cabin-bag dimensions and weight rules too: airport security requirements and airline baggage allowances are different. Keep medication, baby supplies and any supporting documentation easy to reach, and review applicable exemptions before the day you fly.
Help for families and passengers needing assistance
Families should compare usable flight times, whether the hotel supplies suitable beds, airport-to-resort transfer length and whether a children’s club is running in the actual week they travel. For a school-holiday trip, an early morning arrival abroad can be useful, but only if the family can manage the departure and onward transfer comfortably.
Cardiff Airport provides special-assistance parking spaces, assistance call points and support through the terminal. If anyone in your party needs mobility or other travel assistance, arrange it with the airline in advance and read the airport’s assistance and parking information. Do not assume assistance for the outward airport automatically covers the return journey.

Find holidays by dateHow to get better value from a Cardiff departure
- Compare total travel cost: factor in airport transport, car parking, bags, transfers, meals and accommodation, not just the displayed package price.
- Use flexible departure days: smaller airports can have fewer weekly flights on a particular route, so moving by one or two days may reveal a different trip length or price.
- Check the package destination carefully: Faro is an airport, not a resort; Tenerife has different climates; Prague may require a connection or another departure airport.
- Check the board basis: self-catering can make sense for travellers who enjoy eating out, while half-board or all-inclusive can help some families predict costs.
- Count usable holiday hours: a late outbound and early return can make a four-night break feel short, especially with a long transfer.
- Compare nearby airports selectively: Bristol may have a suitable flight Cardiff lacks, but add the road journey, parking and any lost time before declaring it cheaper.
- Check package protection: confirm whether the booking carries ATOL protection and understand the organiser’s conditions.
