Best Places to Go for a January Weekend Break
Five very different city escapes that can work in two or three nights, plus practical plans to make every hour count.

The best January weekend break is not necessarily the warmest or the cheapest city on a list. On a two-night escape, flight times, airport transfers and how close the sights are to one another can matter more than the average temperature. A Friday evening arrival and a Sunday afternoon departure can leave surprisingly little time once you've cleared the airport and reached your hotel.
Our five suggestions cover contrasting January moods: Seville for outdoor sightseeing, Valletta for compact history, Marrakech for food and markets, Lisbon for neighbourhoods and viewpoints, and Kraków for a proper winter-city atmosphere. These are editorial recommendations, not a verified ranking of current fares or hotel prices.
January weekend breaks at a glance
- Best for a milder city weekend: Seville. Choose it for architecture, tapas and comfortable daytime exploring, not guaranteed sunshine.
- Best for an easy-to-structure cultural trip: Valletta. The compact centre makes a short stay feel substantial.
- Best for a complete change of scene: Marrakech. Markets, gardens and food reward a focused itinerary; nights can be chilly.
- Best for food, viewpoints and city wandering: Lisbon. Prepare for hills, rain and some travel between neighbourhoods.
- Best for winter atmosphere: Kraków. Think cosy cafés, historic squares and a warm coat, not reliable snowfall.
Weather reality: the temperatures printed on the accompanying infographic are illustrative ranges, not forecasts. January weather varies considerably from one day to the next. In particular, none of the four milder cities should be sold as a guaranteed beach holiday, and Kraków may be cold without snow.
The first decision: will you get enough time there?
Before choosing your destination, find a real outbound and return flight from an airport you can reach comfortably. Write down arrival at the hotel, not just landing time. Then subtract check-in, transfers and the trip back to the airport. A slightly higher airfare can buy you a full extra afternoon if the schedules work.

Five places worth considering for a January weekend
1. Seville, Spain: the winter city break for outdoor explorers
Seville rewards a weekend built around a relatively small historic core. Stay within comfortable walking distance of Santa Cruz, the cathedral or the centre if you can. Then spend your main sightseeing day between the Real Alcázar, cathedral area and a long, leisurely lunch. Plaza de España makes a rewarding addition when the weather cooperates.
Two-night idea: arrive Friday and explore the surrounding streets over dinner; visit one ticketed landmark on Saturday morning, continue to Plaza de España and Parque de María Luisa, then have an unhurried Sunday breakfast before leaving. Don't cram both major monuments and a long excursion into the same day unless your flight times genuinely allow it.
January catch: the official Alcázar visitor information gives winter visiting hours of 09:30–17:00 from October to March. The official Seville tourism listing says it closes on 1 and 6 January. Those dates can completely change a short itinerary. Check availability before booking flights.
Who should choose it? Couples and friends who prefer leisurely sightseeing, food and architecture over nightlife or beach weather. Mild-looking forecasts still call for layers and a rain plan.

2. Valletta, Malta: a small capital that suits a short stay
Valletta offers one of the strongest answers to a weekend traveller's question: can I see a great deal without constantly changing location? Its historic streets, Upper Barrakka Gardens, harbour views and museums are grouped in a walkable city, although steps and slopes can be tiring. Stay inside or just outside the city gates if exploring on foot is the priority.
Two-night idea: use arrival evening for the waterfront and a Maltese dinner; devote Saturday to Valletta's streets and a major museum or church; leave Sunday flexible for gardens, harbour views or a short excursion if the weather holds. If you want to cross to the Three Cities, allow time for the ferry schedule rather than assuming a continuous service.
The easily missed detail: St John's Co-Cathedral's official visitor page lists tourist opening Monday to Saturday, with Sunday and public-holiday closure. If it is your must-see attraction, book a Saturday visit, not a Sunday afternoon. Admission and hours can change, so check the current page.
Best for: travellers who enjoy history, architecture, sea views and a city with a manageable footprint. January is better regarded as a cultural break with some pleasant outdoor opportunities than a swimming holiday.
3. Marrakech, Morocco: a memorable weekend for food and colour
Marrakech is an excellent alternative to another European city weekend if you're craving a dramatic change of scenery. Spend your limited time wisely: choose a riad near the areas you actually want to explore, wander a manageable part of the medina with time for tea and food, and plan one garden or palace visit rather than chasing every landmark.
Two-night idea: settle in and have dinner after arrival; spend Saturday on the medina, food and a pre-booked major attraction; keep Sunday for a gentle breakfast and perhaps one nearby sight. The most valuable extra is unstructured time to enjoy the city rather than a rushed excursion into the Atlas Mountains or desert.
January catch: warm-looking afternoon photos can hide cold mornings and evenings. Check whether your riad has reliable room heating. For Jardin Majorelle, the garden's official website states that tickets should be obtained via its authorised system; avoid lookalike ticket sellers. Read UK government entry advice for Morocco, as it is outside the Schengen area.
Best for: food lovers, couples and confident city explorers who value atmosphere more than ticking off a long attraction checklist. Morocco is not in Europe, but it is included because this guide covers short breaks departing from the UK.
4. Lisbon, Portugal: hills, viewpoints and an easy-going food weekend
Lisbon works particularly well if you prefer walking, cafés and discovering neighbourhoods. The trick is to pick two areas, not six. Baixa and Chiado offer a convenient central base, while Alfama brings atmospheric lanes and viewpoints. Its steep streets make distance on a map misleading.
Two-night idea: enjoy Baixa and Chiado on your arrival evening; choose Alfama, a viewpoint and a relaxed lunch for Saturday; use Sunday for a museum, pastries or a riverside stroll. Belém is worthwhile, but adds travel time, so make it your main excursion rather than a compulsory extra. Save Sintra for a longer stay unless it's the clear reason you're visiting.
January catch: Lisbon can be rainy and breezy. A conveniently located hotel may be worth more than a cheaper one at the edge of town if it eliminates repeat tram or taxi journeys. Public-transport passes aren't automatically good value: compare their cost with the journeys you will realistically make. For attractions and neighbourhoods, use the official Lisbon tourism website.
Best for: couples, friends and independent travellers who enjoy eating out and exploring at their own pace, and don't need warm beach weather.
5. Kraków, Poland: a proper winter-city escape
Kraków is the deliberate contrast in this list. Instead of chasing mild weather, embrace the season: the Main Market Square, atmospheric streets, museums and cosy restaurants create a good weekend without having to spend hours crossing the city. A central stay near the Old Town keeps you close to the action.
Two-night idea: explore the Old Town and have a Polish dinner on Friday; walk to Wawel Hill and spend Saturday afternoon in a museum or Kazimierz; enjoy a final café stop on Sunday. A day trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau or Wieliczka Salt Mine takes substantial time and demands careful planning. Don't casually bolt both onto a two-night itinerary.
January catch: expect cold weather, potentially icy pavements and limited daylight. Snow is possible, not guaranteed. Choose waterproof shoes with grip and check seasonal opening hours on Kraków's official visitor website. The official tourist-card explanation is useful if you're comparing museum access, but only buy a pass after deciding what you'll actually visit.
Best for: architecture, history, winter atmosphere and café culture. It can offer good value, but check actual flight times, hotel quality and attraction costs before calling it cheaper than other cities.

Browse holidays by dateThe overlooked maths of a two-night break
When comparing a Friday-to-Sunday trip, calculate usable hours at the destination. Imagine two options: one lands Friday at 22:30 and departs Sunday at 10:00, while another lands Friday at 14:00 and departs Sunday at 20:00. Both are advertised as two nights, but the second leaves far more time for sightseeing. Those times are an illustration, not live flight schedules.
Now compare the full cost: flights, cabin baggage, reserved seats if needed, hotel, airport transfers at both ends, local transport and attraction tickets. The apparent low fare can lose its advantage if you need an expensive late-night taxi or an extra day's leave to reach the airport.
Three January weekend traps to avoid
1. Assuming every major sight opens on a Sunday
Short trips are especially vulnerable to closures. Valletta's St John's Co-Cathedral is a clear example. Decide on one unmissable attraction, check its exact visiting days and book the flights around that reality if necessary. Early January public holidays can affect opening times too.
2. Treating 'mild' as 'warm enough to sit outside all evening'
Seville, Lisbon, Malta and Marrakech can have pleasant daytime spells while feeling much colder at night, with rain or wind possible. Book for architecture, food and atmosphere first. Add sunshine as a bonus. For a genuinely beach-led escape, read our Warmest Places in Europe in January guide or Where to Go on Holiday in January.
3. Paying for a cheap hotel that costs you half the weekend
A central hotel usually makes most sense in these compact city breaks, even if it costs a little more per night. Before booking a cheaper outer-district hotel, price two return journeys each day and estimate the lost time. For a two-night break, location often outweighs a small saving.
Pick a weekend by the experience you actually want
- Food-first: Marrakech for markets and Moroccan dishes; Seville for tapas; Lisbon for restaurants and neighbourhood cafés.
- Big history in little time: Valletta and Kraków, where you can plan a concentrated route through the historic centre.
- Romantic and relaxed: Seville or Lisbon, with one ticketed sight and more time to wander.
- Winter atmosphere: Kraków, with indoor back-ups and warm clothing.
- Smallest-feeling itinerary: Valletta, provided the sights you want are open on your travel days.
How to book a January weekend more intelligently
Check two and three nights. An extra night may improve your flight choices or make a destination with a later outbound flight worthwhile. But compare total cost, not only cost per night.
Search beyond Friday-to-Sunday. Thursday-to-Saturday and Saturday-to-Monday are worth checking if your work schedule permits. Midweek does not always mean cheaper; test real offers rather than relying on a rule.
Look at nearby departure airports. More options can help, but add parking, trains and travel time before deciding. Also check return arrival time in the UK, especially before a working Monday.
Understand your booking type. Flight-inclusive packages may have different protections from separate bookings. The Civil Aviation Authority's ATOL guidance explains what is protected. TripsByDate shows advertised holidays and sends you to providers; it does not guarantee an offer's price or availability.
Check travel documents. The UK government's Schengen guidance explains short-visit rules for Spain, Malta, Portugal and Poland; Morocco has its own entry requirements. Check the destination advice again shortly before leaving.
January weekend break FAQs
Where is best for a warm weekend in January?
Of these five city-break picks, Seville and Marrakech are sensible places to investigate for milder daytime conditions. Neither guarantees warmth or dry weather. If sunshine matters more than a short city break, compare the Canary Islands instead, while allowing for the longer journey.
Is two nights enough for a European city break?
Yes, if the flights leave you useful time and you focus on a compact itinerary. Valletta, Kraków's Old Town and central Seville work particularly well for a limited number of highlights. For a late Friday arrival and early Sunday departure, three nights can make the trip feel much less rushed.
Is January always cheaper than December?
No. Some dates after New Year can have less demand, but individual flights, festivals, hotel availability and weekends can change the price. Compare actual options for your dates rather than assuming January is uniformly cheap. See Cheapest Holiday Destinations in January.
Where is best for a January weekend with friends?
For food, nightlife and plenty of choice, consider Seville, Lisbon or Marrakech. For museums, wintry streets and cosy evenings, Kraków may suit you better. Choose based on how much of the weekend you want to spend sightseeing versus relaxing.
What should I pack for a two-night January break?
Comfortable weather-appropriate shoes, one warm outer layer, adaptable outfits, a small umbrella or waterproof layer, and any essentials in your cabin bag. For Kraków prioritise winter clothing; for Marrakech prioritise layering between warmer afternoons and cooler nights. Check the specific airline's baggage rules.
