Winter Sun Holidays from Edinburgh

When Edinburgh's afternoons turn dark and frosty, a change of scenery can feel especially good. But do you want a brighter city break, a week beside a heated pool, or properly hot beach weather? Start with that question and make your winter escape count.

Edinburgh winter sun infographic featuring Lanzarote, Málaga and Cyprus, plus planning and departure tips

First choose the winter you want to escape to

“Winter sun” covers two quite different holidays. A sunny afternoon exploring Málaga is a lovely escape from a Scottish February. It does not necessarily mean warm sea swimming. Lanzarote or southern Gran Canaria are better starting points for outdoor resort days; farther-flung destinations may offer more heat, but require more flying time and often a longer holiday.

Think in terms of three kinds of escape: mild culture and cafés (Málaga or Cyprus), comfortable outdoor warmth (the Canaries), or a stronger chance of hot-weather resort conditions (some Egyptian, Gulf or tropical destinations). Weather can vary anywhere, and no destination offers guaranteed sunshine.

Edinburgh Airport's own winter-destination information highlights a changing international network. Jet2 has also advertised Edinburgh winter-sun options including the Canaries, Málaga, Malta, Paphos and Sharm el-Sheikh in its 2027/28 programme. Routes, operators and operating dates change: treat a destination as an idea until you check a specific departure. See Edinburgh Airport's winter inspiration and Jet2's published winter programme.

Find Edinburgh holidays without choosing a destination first

Most people have a few possible dates before they have a destination. TripsByDate starts with those dates. Choose Edinburgh as your departure airport, browse advertised packages in departure-date order and see what catches your attention. It's designed more like scrolling through a feed than repeatedly filling in destination-led search forms. If you have a week off in January, you can browse what's coming up and discover somewhere you had not thought to look for.

These featured listings are Edinburgh departures from participating providers, not an exclusive winter-sun filter. We have deliberately kept the selection broad so you can spot other appealing holidays too. They are not a complete view of the market; confirm dates, final prices and availability directly with the operator.

What the winter temperatures actually tell you

Holiday photos can be misleading. For a useful comparison, look at historical average daily highs, not the hottest day ever recorded. The following figures come from Spain's national meteorological agency, AEMET, using its 1981–2010 station normals. They are climate benchmarks, not forecasts or guaranteed resort temperatures.

  • Lanzarote Airport: December 21.8°C, January 20.7°C, February 21.3°C. A promising choice for walks, outdoor lunches and resort breaks; wind can make a sunny day feel cooler.
  • Gran Canaria Airport: December 22.2°C, January 20.8°C, February 21.2°C. A useful island benchmark, but weather in southern resorts and mountainous interiors can differ markedly from the airport.
  • Málaga Airport: January 16.8°C, February 17.7°C. More of a sightseeing-and-terrace break than a dependable winter beach holiday.

Sources: official AEMET station records for Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Málaga. They measure air temperature at specific stations, not sea temperatures or individual hotel pools.

Useful distinction: don't use a number such as 21°C to assume you'll swim comfortably. Ask whether the hotel pool is actually heated in the month you're travelling, and check recent reviews about wind exposure, sunshine on the pool terrace and facilities open during winter.

Lanzarote: the easy outdoor-winter option

Lanzarote is an attractive choice when you want to replace Edinburgh's winter layers with a lighter jacket, a coffee outside and volcanic scenery. Playa Blanca is worth considering for a more relaxed resort base; Puerto del Carmen for restaurants and a lively seafront; Costa Teguise for beaches and water sports, bearing in mind exposure to wind.

Make the most of a week: allow a full day for Timanfaya National Park and the island's volcanic landscapes, but check official visitor arrangements and whether your excursion includes transport. For a shorter stay, choose a base you enjoy without needing to drive all over the island. See the official Lanzarote tourism website.

Don't overlook: evening temperatures can be noticeably cooler, and a beautiful resort pool may not be comfortable to use unless heated. If swimming is central to your trip, confirm that detail before booking.

Málaga: winter sun for people who want a city, not a sunbed

Málaga offers something different: museums, the old town, tapas, waterfront walks and the freedom to enjoy a city without summer's most intense heat. A winter morning can be made for exploring the Alcazaba, followed by a long lunch and a promenade stroll. It is a strong choice for a three- or four-night cultural escape, not necessarily for a pool-focused holiday.

Location matters: staying in Málaga city is very different from booking a hotel farther along the Costa del Sol. If you're only away for a few days, calculate the resort transfer before choosing a low advertised price. The airport has suburban rail links toward Málaga city and certain coastal destinations; use Aena's airport rail information to plan the actual journey. For ideas, explore Málaga's official visitor information.

Good alternative: if your dates suit southern Spain better than the Canaries, value the city-break experience on its own terms. A winter rooftop lunch may be memorable even when the water is too cold for a swim.

Cyprus: coast, archaeology and quieter winter days

The Cyprus image captures its appeal: dramatic coastline, history and generous winter daylight compared with home. But Cyprus is not a guaranteed hot-beach escape in January. The island's tourism authority notes that winter is cooler, with the sea around 16–17°C during January–March. That is a very different proposition from a summer swimming holiday.

Choose your base around what will be open. Paphos can suit travellers who want archaeology, coastal walks and cafés; a resort selected only for summer nightlife may feel quiet in January. Ask your hotel about restaurants, indoor pools and winter services. Check official Cyprus climate information and current UK travel advice.

For Edinburgh travellers, check the seasonal flight timetable carefully: a destination offered within a winter programme does not imply daily non-stop flights or a convenient three-night stay.

Edinburgh winter sun inspiration featuring Gran Canaria, Egypt, Dubai and Cape Verde, with advice on holiday timing and packing

Gran Canaria: choose the south if resort sunshine is the priority

Gran Canaria is varied enough that the hotel location can matter more than a small difference in island-wide climate averages. Maspalomas and Meloneras suit relaxed resort holidays and beachfront walks; Puerto Rico and Amadores attract travellers looking for a sheltered-feeling coastal base. Las Palmas offers an entirely different, more urban experience.

The southern resort areas are often chosen for winter beach breaks, but avoid assuming every hotel has the same sun exposure. Check the exact room or pool setting, and the likely transfer from the airport. There is more inspiration at Gran Canaria's official tourism website.

Egypt, Dubai or Cape Verde: when you want more than a mild afternoon

These three destinations appear in the supplementary infographic, and each illustrates a different reason to travel farther. Egypt's Red Sea resorts can suit travellers who prioritise resort facilities, snorkelling and clearer winter beach-holiday expectations. Dubai combines urban attractions with winter outdoor weather. Cape Verde appeals to people wanting a beach-focused escape and a different pace.

But do not treat them as interchangeable. Flight duration, flight frequency, wind, entry rules, local customs, hotel meal plans and overall costs can all change the experience. In particular, the Cape Verde postcard is inspiration, not confirmation of a direct flight from Edinburgh. Check the itinerary for your actual dates, any connections, and whether the trip is a flight-and-hotel package.

Egypt: choose a resort around facilities you will genuinely use, and check how far the airport transfer is. If swimming is the goal, ask about heated pools and the practicality of sea swimming for your dates. See UK travel advice for Egypt.

Dubai: be realistic about the total budget, including meals, transport and attractions, not just the headline hotel rate. Edinburgh Airport has promoted direct Dubai connectivity, but verify the operating service for your chosen dates and the actual package inclusions. Check official Visit Dubai for neighbourhoods and ideas, plus UK entry and travel guidance.

Cape Verde: consider your resort's beach exposure and how much exploration you want. A beach holiday on Sal is a different proposition from a city break in Europe, and some locations are breezy. Confirm route availability and entry requirements rather than booking around an appealing picture alone. See UK travel advice for Cape Verde.

Should you go in November, December, January or February?

The second infographic offers four possible departure months. There is no universal cheapest month, so use this as a planning framework rather than a promise:

  • November: useful if you want a late-autumn change of scene before the festive period. Compare destinations individually; Mediterranean seas and evenings cool as the month progresses.
  • December: consider the price and availability difference between early December and Christmas/New Year. A festive week may have a very different total cost from an earlier departure.
  • January: attractive for getting away after the holidays, but it can be one of the coolest months in many Mediterranean destinations. Decide whether walking weather is enough or whether you really want beach warmth.
  • February: appealing for a midwinter reset. Scottish school holiday dates can affect what is convenient for families, so compare the exact week rather than relying on the month's reputation.

If you're planning around time off, our annual leave and bank holiday guide can help. For broader comparisons, see the best months for winter sun and where Europe stays warmest.

Getting to Edinburgh Airport in winter: decisions locals should make first

A winter holiday can begin at 4am on an icy driveway. For travellers from Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife, the Borders or farther afield, the journey to EDI may be as important as the flight time. Check actual road and public-transport conditions for your day, especially when a dawn departure looks cheapest.

Tram, bus or car?

Tram: the tram links the airport with central Edinburgh and other stops along its route. It's useful if your outbound and inbound flights fall within operating hours, but don't assume a late-night return or early check-in can be covered without checking timetables. See Edinburgh Trams.

Airlink 100 and other buses: buses may better suit your starting point and travel time. Check the live airport journey options and overnight availability rather than assuming every route runs at the same frequency. See Edinburgh Airport's bus information.

Car: for a family with luggage travelling from outside Edinburgh, advance parking may be practical, but factor in fuel, road conditions, walking time and the flight's return hour. Compare total transport cost rather than a car-park's headline daily charge.

There is a free drop-off option, but it is not outside the terminal

Edinburgh Airport currently offers 30 minutes free in its Long Stay drop-off/pick-up area. The airport advises allowing around 10 minutes to walk to the terminal, with no shuttle bus from this area. Charged drop-off closer to the terminal is a separate option. For icy conditions or mobility needs, choose accordingly. Check the airport's current drop-off guidance before setting off.

What about winter liquids and baggage rules?

Edinburgh Airport currently allows individual liquid containers up to two litres through security, with liquids and electronic devices generally staying in your bag. Metal or double-walled bottles must be empty at screening. This does not mean the airport you fly home from has the same rules, nor does it change airline cabin-baggage limits. See Edinburgh Airport's security advice.

Pack for the whole journey: warm clothing for your Scottish departure and return, plus layers for cool destination evenings. On a long-haul trip, check the operator's baggage allowance and whether the connection or transfer changes what you need in your cabin bag.

Seven checks that stop a winter-sun bargain becoming a disappointment

  1. Confirm the actual route. A destination shown by the airport or on an infographic may be seasonal, connection-only on your dates, or absent from current package inventory.
  2. Choose by what you will do. If you want swimming and sunbeds, book for that. If you want food, culture and light-jacket weather, don't pay a long-haul premium unnecessarily.
  3. Check the exact resort microclimate. Wind exposure, altitude and which coast you're on matter. Don't assume an island's airport temperature describes your poolside experience.
  4. Ask whether facilities operate in winter. Heated pools, children's clubs, outdoor bars, excursions and beach restaurants can have reduced hours or seasonal closures.
  5. Calculate your usable holiday time. A late arrival and early return can cut the enjoyment of a short stay. For longer flights, a seven-night holiday may make more sense than three.
  6. Compare the whole price. Airport travel, bags, transfers, meals, local transport, resort fees and attraction tickets can outweigh a small difference in the displayed package price.
  7. Verify the booking and travel requirements. TripsByDate helps you discover options; the operator confirms final availability, the contract and price. Check GOV.UK foreign travel advice and CAA ATOL guidance where applicable.

Questions about winter sun holidays from Edinburgh

Which destination is best for an Edinburgh winter beach holiday?

If outdoor resort time is the priority, the Canaries are a sensible starting point. Lanzarote and southern Gran Canaria offer a different winter proposition from Málaga or Cyprus. For stronger heat, investigate longer-distance options and confirm flight and package availability for your dates.

Can I find a three- or four-night winter sun break from Edinburgh?

Potentially, depending on the schedule and operator. Short breaks tend to work better where flights and transfers leave enough time on the ground. For long-haul resorts or islands with infrequent departures, compare a full week rather than forcing an awkward short stay.

Are the Canary Islands guaranteed warm enough for swimming in January?

No. Historical daytime averages can be pleasant, but wind, cloud, sea temperatures and hotel pool heating all affect the experience. A heated pool and sheltered terrace may matter more than a degree or two in a climate table.

Does TripsByDate only show winter sun deals on this page?

No. The featured Edinburgh packages are intentionally broad, showing other holiday ideas too. Browse departure dates on TripsByDate, then confirm the destination, duration and final offer with the relevant travel provider.

Is Dubai or Cape Verde a direct flight from Edinburgh?

Do not assume either from the artwork. Edinburgh Airport has advertised direct Dubai services, while the route and availability for Cape Verde need checking for the exact travel date. Package listings may include connecting flights. Always review the complete itinerary before booking.

Is February always cheaper than December?

No. The school holiday calendar, Christmas/New Year peak, flights, accommodation and remaining inventory all matter. Compare specific dates and total package inclusions rather than trusting a blanket monthly rule.
