Winter Sun Holidays from Bristol
Blue skies on a winter afternoon, a café table in the sunshine or a proper week by the pool? Start with what you want the weather to let you do, then find a departure from Bristol that fits.

First, pick the winter you want to escape to
Winter sun can mean very different holidays. A February afternoon in southern Tenerife can feel like a welcome escape from a damp West Country morning. A weekend in Seville might offer comfortable sightseeing weather but still call for a jacket after dark. Both are worthwhile, but they are not interchangeable.
For travellers using Bristol Airport (BRS), there is a useful mix of nearer European escapes and longer flights to warmer islands. Your best choice depends on whether you want pool time, walking weather, food and culture, or simply a change of scene. Do not pay for a beach-resort package expecting hot weather when what the destination actually offers is a pleasant winter city break.
Three ways to choose, without getting overwhelmed
- Want to sit outside by the pool? Start with Tenerife or Lanzarote, then verify the individual resort, wind exposure and whether the pool is heated. Warm days are possible, but neither destination guarantees swimming weather.
- Want sunny streets, old towns and good lunches? Look at Alicante, Seville, Faro or Malta. Mild daytime weather can be excellent for exploring, even when the sea is too cool for most swimmers.
- Only have three or four nights? Prioritise convenient flight times, a compact base and an easy transfer. A longer flight or far-flung resort can eat up a surprising amount of a short escape.
See what is coming up from Bristol, before choosing where
Traditional holiday searches often start by asking where you want to go. TripsByDate starts with the departure date instead. Choose Bristol, scan the upcoming advertised package holidays in date order and see what destinations catch your eye. You can dip in for a quick browse, compare options and return later without repeatedly starting a destination-specific search from scratch.
The packages below are a broader Bristol departure selection, not a promise that every listing is a winter-sun holiday. We have deliberately kept the selection open so you can discover other offers too. Check the destination, dates, trip length and supplier details before booking. TripsByDate is a discovery site, not the company taking your booking, and it does not cover every holiday on sale.

How warm is winter sun, really?
Here is a reality check from Spain's official meteorological agency, AEMET. These are average daily maximum temperatures in January, measured at named airport stations during 1981–2010. They are historical climate normals, not a forecast, a sea-temperature measure or a guarantee for your hotel:
- Tenerife South Airport: 21.7°C. A stronger starting point for winter beach and outdoor holidays. The north of the island, higher ground and exposed coastlines can feel very different.
- Lanzarote Airport: 20.7°C. Appealing for walking, beaches and volcanic scenery, but the wind and your exact beach location matter.
- Alicante-Elche Airport: 16.7°C. Better approached as a mild city-and-coast escape than a guaranteed sunbathing holiday.
- Seville Airport: 16.0°C. Promising for exploring on a bright day, but winter nights are much cooler and rainfall remains possible.
Check the original data: Tenerife South, Lanzarote, Alicante and Seville. For a broader seasonal perspective, see our guide to the best months for winter sun.
The useful distinction: an average high of 16°C could mean a lovely lunchtime terrace, but it is not the same proposition as 21°C on a sheltered Canary Island beach. Look at rainfall, wind, evening temperatures and sea conditions as well as the headline daytime high.
Where to go from Bristol: six holidays, six different reasons
Tenerife: the winter resort holiday where the hotel choice really matters
If warm afternoons and outdoor relaxation are the priority, Tenerife is a natural first comparison. Costa Adeje offers a large choice of resort hotels and promenades; Los Cristianos is worth considering for its walkable centre and harbour; Playa de las Américas suits those wanting a livelier evening scene. These are broad characterisations, so check the individual hotel location rather than relying on a resort name alone.
Think beyond the photograph: ask the hotel whether its outdoor pool is heated on your dates, whether any facilities are shut for maintenance and how sheltered the pool or terrace is. A south-coast hotel with an excellent winter setup may be more valuable than a fancier property in a less suitable location. If you want Teide or inland excursions, pack for markedly cooler conditions at altitude.
Lanzarote: a relaxed alternative for beaches and extraordinary landscapes
Choose Lanzarote if you want a week that alternates coastal downtime with exploring. Playa Blanca can work well for a gentler resort stay, while Puerto del Carmen offers a broad beach-and-restaurants choice. Costa Teguise is another option, but consider the prevailing wind and the hotel’s position if you plan to spend your days outdoors.
Spend one day away from the pool: the volcanic landscapes of Timanfaya and the island’s striking viewpoints are a major part of Lanzarote's appeal. Check official visiting arrangements and whether a car or organised excursion makes sense. A low-priced hotel without good transport may limit your enjoyment if exploring is important.

Faro and the Algarve: think coastal walks, cafés and slower days
The Algarve in winter is not a promise of uninterrupted beach weather. Its appeal can be the opposite of a packed summer resort: quieter streets, long lunches, ocean walks and the chance to explore historic towns. Faro itself is good for its old town and Ria Formosa access; Tavira offers a different, more traditional town atmosphere; Lagos suits visitors who want dramatic coastal views but involves a longer journey from the airport.
Check what stays open. Some beachside businesses and seasonal activities reduce their hours outside summer. Decide whether you want a working town, a hotel with year-round facilities or a quiet resort. That is a more important winter decision than finding the closest beach on a map. Read our Portugal seasonal guide before deciding on the month.
Seville: winter sunshine for people who would rather explore than swim
Seville deserves a different kind of holiday plan. In winter you can spend your time around the Real Alcázar, Cathedral, Santa Cruz and Triana rather than searching for a swimming pool. You might have comfortably mild afternoons, but you still need layers and a wet-weather option. For a three- or four-night trip, staying somewhere walkable can be worth more than saving a little on an outlying hotel.
Practical check: verify flights on your exact dates, especially for a short break, and book major attractions using their official ticket websites where appropriate. Seville is an example of why a holiday can feel sunny and uplifting without being a hot-weather beach break. AEMET's January climate normal is 16.0°C for the average daily high at the airport, not a forecast.
Malta: an island for history, harbours and eating well
Malta suits travellers who want a rewarding winter itinerary even if a beach day never happens. Valletta offers culture and restaurants within a compact historic setting; Sliema can be convenient for waterfront walks and connections; Mdina makes a memorable excursion. Winter winds and occasional wet days are part of the picture, so plan a mix of indoor and outdoor activities.
Hotel decision: choose a base for the places you will actually visit, rather than selecting a summer-oriented beach resort automatically. If visiting Gozo or relying on ferries, leave some flexibility for the weather. Consider whether an indoor pool, spa or good public-transport access would bring you more value than an unheated outdoor pool.
Alicante: perhaps the easiest choice for a low-fuss city-and-sea escape
For a shorter winter break, Alicante can be appealing precisely because it works without a complicated resort itinerary. Stay near the centre or waterfront and combine Santa Bárbara Castle, the old quarter, the Explanada and a long seaside lunch. The palm-lined setting is attractive year-round, but winter beach swimming is a different expectation from summer.
Beware the vague destination label: a package marketed as Costa Blanca might place you well away from Alicante city. A hotel in Benidorm or another coastal resort may suit a longer stay, but compare the airport transfer and the local atmosphere before choosing it for three nights. Our Spain-by-season guide can help you weigh up the timing.
What about other winter departures from Bristol?
The six destinations in our infographics are starting points, not the whole market. Bristol Airport's published Jet2 winter 2026/27 programme includes routes to the Canary Islands, Málaga, Madeira, Paphos and Agadir, among others. Schedules differ by date, airline and season, and a programme announcement does not guarantee the particular flights or package you need.
Two especially interesting alternatives: Madeira for gardens, walking and scenery rather than conventional beach days; and Agadir for travellers considering a different winter resort atmosphere. Check flight patterns, weather expectations, entry requirements and availability instead of assuming all winter-sun destinations offer the same experience.

Browse departures by dateGetting from Bristol and the wider South West to the airport
For Bristol locals, airport access may be straightforward, but travellers from Bath, Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, Wiltshire and South Wales need to include the complete journey when comparing holiday prices. Bristol Airport has no direct railway station at the terminal, so a rail journey generally involves an onward bus connection.
Which Airport Flyer makes sense for you?
- A1 Bristol: connects Bristol Bus Station, the centre and Temple Meads with the airport. It runs around the clock, but allow for traffic and the actual departure on your travel date.
- A2 Portishead: a useful alternative for people approaching via Portishead, Clevedon, Nailsea or Backwell.
- A3 Weston: connects the Weston-super-Mare and Worle area to the airport.
- A4 Bath: provides an option from Bath and points along its route, though the journey is longer than from central Bristol.
The airport publishes current Flyer routes and timetables. Its rail information also explains combined rail-and-Flyer ticketing. If coming from Cardiff or elsewhere in South Wales, compare the complete rail/bus route with the cost of driving or a suitable coach. Check the last return connection before booking a late landing.
Drop-off and collection: don't automatically pay for the forecourt
Bristol Airport has a free Waiting Zone for up to one hour, with an onward bus connection, as an alternative to charged terminal-area drop-off and pick-up. The airport announced a temporary Waiting Zone relocation between 19 October and 18 December 2026; readers travelling in that period should follow the current signs and official map. Check Bristol Airport's Waiting Zone guidance before leaving home. Do not stop on airport red routes.
Security rules: Bristol and your return airport may disagree
Bristol Airport currently permits liquid containers of up to two litres through its security screening, and says liquids and electronics can remain inside cabin bags. This is an airport-screening rule, not an airline baggage allowance. Your overseas return airport may impose different limits, and metal drinking bottles have additional requirements. Check the airport's official security guidance and your airline before packing. Cabin-only travel may save bag-drop time, but it only saves money if your luggage fits your ticket's allowance.
Make a winter package worthwhile: seven checks that actually change the trip
- Check winter facilities, not summer photos. Ask whether the pool is heated, restaurants are open and entertainment runs during your stay.
- Look at wind as well as temperature. A sheltered terrace and a wind-exposed beach can feel very different on the same day.
- Count usable holiday hours. A four-night deal with inconvenient flights may deliver less enjoyable time than a slightly dearer three-night itinerary.
- Price the entire journey from home. Include Bristol airport transport or parking, luggage, local transfers, meals and any resort charges.
- Check where the hotel really is. “Algarve”, “Tenerife” and “Costa Blanca” cover very different places and transfer times.
- Look beyond the obvious Friday departure. Compare adjoining dates and different trip lengths if you have flexibility. Neither midweek nor last-minute booking guarantees a lower price.
- Confirm with the actual holiday seller. TripsByDate shows advertised packages from participating operators, but final availability, exact inclusions, payment terms and prices are the supplier's responsibility. Check CAA ATOL guidance where applicable and GOV.UK travel advice for your destination.
Winter sun questions for Bristol travellers
Is December, January or February best for winter sun from Bristol?
It depends on the destination and what you want to do. December can be busy around Christmas and New Year; January can suit a post-holiday escape; February half-term can change family demand. Compare the actual weather normals and live packages, not a universal “cheapest month” claim. If warmth is the priority, compare the Canaries before assuming the Algarve or mainland Spain will feel the same.
Can I get real beach weather without a long-haul flight?
Sometimes, but it cannot be guaranteed. Tenerife and Lanzarote offer better winter warmth potential than many European mainland destinations, yet wind, cloud, resort choice and water temperature still matter. For consistent pool time, the hotel's winter facilities are essential.
Are three or four nights enough for winter sunshine?
Yes for a change of scene, especially somewhere with an easy airport transfer. For a short trip, Alicante, Seville or Faro may appeal as city-and-culture choices. A Canary Island holiday can also work over a few days, but weigh the longer flight against the amount of usable time. Our Bristol airport guide covers wider departures.
Does TripsByDate show only winter-sun packages on this page?
No. The featured packages are filtered by Bristol Airport, not by a subjective winter-sun category. That lets you browse other destinations and dates too. Follow an interesting offer to its provider to verify what is included, and return as the inventory changes.
Would Cardiff, Birmingham or another airport be cheaper?
It might be, but compare the door-to-door costs and practical return journey, not just the headline package price. A small saving can disappear after extra road miles, parking or an overnight stay. Bristol may be the more sensible departure even when another airport advertises a lower price.
