Winter Sun Holidays from Birmingham
Need a break from grey skies? Start at Birmingham Airport, but choose your winter escape by what you actually want to do: swim, walk, explore, eat well or simply enjoy daylight somewhere different.

The best winter sun holiday is the one that matches your plans
Picture two Birmingham travellers booking a break in January. One wants a sun lounger, outdoor pool and a chance of afternoons in a T-shirt. The other wants an easy flight, a waterfront lunch, interesting streets and fewer summer crowds. They might both say “winter sun”, but they should probably book different places.
That is the first decision to make. A bright day in Málaga can be lovely for an outdoor café without being warm enough for a conventional beach holiday. Southern Tenerife offers stronger midwinter warmth, but even there cloud, wind, sea temperature and the precise resort matter. No destination guarantees sunshine every day.
Why start with Birmingham? Birmingham Airport has published a 2026/27 winter programme including Tenerife, other Canary Islands, Alicante, Málaga, Faro, Malta and Marrakech. The programme confirms routes have been offered, not that a flight or package is available on your chosen date. Check actual departure patterns and holiday duration before making plans. See the airport's winter programme announcement.
On TripsByDate, you can choose Birmingham (BHX) first, then scroll advertised package holidays in departure-date order. Instead of committing to one destination and filling out another search form every time you want to compare, you can browse what's coming up, spot a place you hadn't considered and return whenever you have free dates. It is deliberately designed as a quick, feed-like discovery experience. Listings come from participating providers, and the seller confirms final prices, availability and terms.

How warm is winter sun, really? Start with verified figures
Here are historical average daily maximum temperatures, not forecasts, water temperatures or a promise about the weather during your holiday. Spanish figures come from AEMET's 1981–2010 station normals; Faro uses Portugal's IPMA 1991–2020 normals; Malta uses its meteorological office's 1991–2020 national climate data. Different measurement periods and stations mean these are planning benchmarks, not a precise league table.
- Tenerife South Airport: January 21.7°C, February 22.0°C. The strongest winter beach-weather option among the featured European destinations, though the south coast is not the same as Tenerife's mountains or greener north.
- Alicante: January 17.0°C, February 17.6°C. Think sunny walks, terraces and a lively city, not assured swimming weather.
- Málaga Airport: January 16.8°C, February 17.7°C. A culture-and-coast break with some pleasant outdoor afternoons and a real possibility of rain.
- Faro: January average maximum around 16°C in IPMA's 1991–2020 normals. Better for coastal walks, food and quiet towns than for a midwinter beach holiday.
- Malta: January and February average maximum 15.7°C in its 1991–2020 climate profile. Excellent sightseeing potential, but it is a breezy Mediterranean winter, not summer.
Official climate sources: Tenerife South (AEMET), Alicante (AEMET), Málaga (AEMET), Faro (IPMA) and Malta climate profile. Resort conditions can differ from airport stations, particularly with altitude and exposure.
Don't confuse air temperature with pool temperature. A sunny 21°C afternoon does not mean the sea or an unheated pool will be comfortable. If swimming is central to the holiday, verify that the specific pool is heated during your dates, whether it is indoor or outdoor, and whether any pool or children's splash area is seasonal.
Six winter escapes from Birmingham, for six different priorities
Tenerife: prioritise warmth, then pick the right coast
For a classic winter escape built around the outdoors, Tenerife has the most convincing warmth of the destinations in our images. Its big advantage is variety: beaches, resort facilities, coastal walks and a dramatic volcanic interior. But Tenerife is not one uniform climate.
Where to look: Costa Adeje suits travellers seeking resort hotels and facilities; Los Cristianos combines a beach, promenade and town atmosphere; Playa de las Américas offers a livelier setting. If beach or pool time is the main purpose of your trip, investigate the south-western resorts first. Do not book a picturesque northern or hillside property assuming it will feel identical to the south coast.
Extra tip: a Teide excursion can be much colder than the coast, and high-altitude conditions can interrupt access. Bring proper layers, check conditions and don't schedule a mountain trip so tightly that bad weather ruins your one big outing. For broader planning, see official Canary Islands tourism information.
Alicante: choose a winter city break with a beach attached
Alicante is an appealing choice if your idea of winter sun is walking along the Explanada, exploring the old quarter and eating outdoors whenever the weather allows. Its beach is an attractive backdrop even when swimming is not. For a short stay, the city itself can be more practical than booking far along the Costa Blanca.
Where to look: central Alicante gives you easy access to restaurants, the marina, old town and the Postiguet beach. A Benidorm resort offers a different holiday: more purpose-built accommodation and entertainment, but a longer journey from the arrival airport and a need to check which facilities actually operate in winter.
Extra tip: photograph-friendly sunshine can vanish after sunset. Plan a light-jacket evening and choose accommodation where you can enjoy restaurants without committing to repeated long taxis. Find local ideas through Alicante's official tourism website.
Faro and the Algarve: don't confuse the airport with your resort
Faro is a useful arrival point, but an advertised “Faro holiday” might mean the city, a nearby coastal town or a resort a considerable distance away. That changes the character of a three- or four-night winter trip more than a small difference in the headline package price.
Where to look: Faro itself is a strong base for an old-town-and-food break, with the Ria Formosa nearby. Tavira is worth considering for a calmer town-focused stay; Lagos offers dramatic coastal scenery, but involves a longer onward journey. Beach-first resorts may be quiet and some seasonal businesses may not operate as they do in August.
Extra tip: winter in the Algarve is particularly good for walks and local food when the weather cooperates. Leave a weather-flexible day for the coast instead of prepaying for every activity, and check coastal conditions before cliffside walks. Explore official Algarve visitor information.

Málaga: an excellent winter city break, not a guaranteed beach holiday
Málaga combines museums, lively streets, a walkable centre and the sea. It is a smart choice for someone who wants to feel they've been somewhere interesting, even if the weather is mixed. The Picasso connection, Alcazaba and waterfront offer plenty beyond lying on a beach.
Where to look: stay in or near central Málaga when you want restaurants and sightseeing within reach. A hotel elsewhere on the Costa del Sol may suit a longer resort break but can cost you valuable time in transfers. On a short winter visit, Málaga city is a different proposition from Marbella or the western coast.
Extra tip: compare a centrally located room with a cheaper room on the outskirts after factoring in transport each day. And don't make a beach day the only plan: check museum and attraction opening schedules so a rainy afternoon is still enjoyable. See Andalucía's official tourism guide.
Malta: make winter about history, harbour views and food
Malta is often marketed with turquoise water, but winter is arguably a more interesting time to lean into Valletta's streets, historic sites, harbour views and local restaurants. Expect changeable weather, breezes and the need for an indoor alternative. The island is small on a map, but cross-island journeys still take time.
Where to look: Valletta makes a distinctive base for a culture-led trip; Sliema can suit travellers prioritising seafront accommodation and transport connections. A remote beach hotel may be less useful than it looks if its summer amenities are closed. For a short break, look at the actual bus or ferry journey to the places you want to visit.
Extra tip: keep a flexible day for Mdina or the Three Cities, and check ferry conditions before building a tight itinerary around a boat trip. Use Visit Malta to explore heritage sites and current visitor information.
Marrakech: sunshine, souks and a colder-than-expected evening
Marrakech is not a Mediterranean beach resort. Its winter appeal is colour, architecture, markets, gardens and food, with a different atmosphere from the other five choices. Daytime sunshine can feel comfortable, while evenings and early mornings can be surprisingly chilly, particularly in accommodation without good heating.
Where to look: a riad in the medina offers character and immediate access to bustling streets, but the final stretch to the door may be on foot. A hotel outside the medina may make airport transfers, luggage and late arrival easier. Ask about heating, arrival directions and who meets you if your transfer cannot drive right to the entrance.
Extra tip: keep your first evening simple. It is easier to enjoy the medina once you've learned the route to your accommodation. The Atlas Mountains are a different climate from the city, so an excursion needs separate clothing and weather checks. See Morocco's tourism website and GOV.UK travel advice for Morocco before booking.
Choosing the right length: three nights or a proper winter week?
This is where starting with your available departure dates helps. Three nights can work well in Málaga, Alicante, Valletta or Marrakech if flights and transfers leave enough usable hours. For Tenerife or a resort far from Faro, a longer stay may give you better value from the travelling involved.
- Three nights: choose a convenient arrival, a compact area to explore and a hotel near evening food options. Count usable days, not just hotel nights.
- Four or five nights: allow for one relaxed coastal day and one activity or town visit, without having to rush both.
- Seven nights: worthwhile when your main plan is relaxing at a resort and making occasional excursions, particularly where airport and resort transfers are substantial.
Try Thursday-to-Sunday, Friday-to-Monday or midweek dates where annual leave allows. The cheapest departure day varies with demand; none is consistently the winner. For other timing ideas, read our guide to the best months for winter sun and planning around annual leave and bank holidays.

Train via Birmingham International and the free Air-Rail Link
The airport is served by Birmingham International railway station, connected to the terminal by its free Air-Rail Link. The airport currently states it operates daily from 03:30 to 00:30. If you have an early winter flight or a late return, check both the Air-Rail Link hours and the first or last train from your home station. The connection is useful for travellers from Birmingham New Street, Coventry, Solihull and other parts of the West Midlands, but your full journey depends on the actual timetable. See Birmingham Airport's rail guide and National Rail.
By bus, coach or car
The airport's transport guidance lists the X1 service linking central Birmingham and Coventry and X12 linking Birmingham and Solihull, alongside other services and coaches. Compare the actual journey time for your departure, especially on weekends and during roadworks. See the official bus and coach information.
If somebody is driving you, the airport currently offers up to 10 minutes free in its designated Drop Off car park, with a roughly five-to-ten-minute walk via a covered walkway. This is not the same as Premium Set Down beside the terminal, which is charged. The free period has conditions, so read current drop-off guidance and allow extra time for winter weather, luggage and children. If leaving your own car, compare total parking cost rather than the headline nightly rate.
Security rules and winter packing
Birmingham Airport's official guidance currently permits liquids, pastes and gels in containers up to two litres to remain in cabin baggage during screening; electricals can remain inside as well. That does not override your airline's baggage allowance, and the airport you return from may still have tighter security rules. Read the latest Birmingham security advice before travelling.
Pack for the destination, not the holiday advert: light daytime clothes, comfortable shoes, a warmer layer for the evening, and rain protection where appropriate. For a Canary Islands beach holiday, check hotel pool arrangements; for Marrakech, bring layers for cool nights; for Malta or Faro, plan for breezy coastal walks.
The overlooked costs that decide whether a winter deal is good value
A low advertised package price is a useful starting point, not the whole calculation. Ask what you are actually getting for your money:
- Hotel use in winter: are the outdoor pool, kids' facilities, bars and restaurants open on your dates? Is pool heating included?
- Board basis: half board may be valuable in a quiet resort with few nearby restaurants; a city hotel might make breakfast-only more enjoyable.
- Transfer time: check the exact resort, not just the arrival airport. This matters especially in the Algarve and on larger islands.
- Flight schedule: a late arrival and early return can make a four-night trip feel much shorter. Compare estimated door-to-hotel and hotel-to-home time.
- Baggage and airport travel: factor in checked bags, seats if wanted, rail or parking, and any overnight airport hotel.
- Protection and travel documents: check the provider's booking terms, applicable ATOL protection, suitable insurance and destination-specific UK government travel advice.
One especially useful question to send your hotel: “Which pools and restaurants will be open during my dates, and is the outdoor pool heated?” The answer can be worth more than dozens of summer review photographs.
Frequently asked questions about winter sun from Birmingham
Where is warmest for winter sun from Birmingham?
Among the six destinations shown here, southern Tenerife offers the strongest historical midwinter daytime warmth. But conditions vary, and a good resort choice matters. Alicante, Málaga, Faro and Malta are generally better framed as milder sightseeing and coastal breaks in January and February.
Is Tenerife warm enough to swim in January?
Some visitors enjoy swimming, but air temperatures are not water temperatures, and tolerance varies. If pool swimming matters, verify that the exact hotel pool is heated and operational. Don't assume all pools at a resort are treated the same way.
Can I take a three-night winter sun break from Birmingham?
Potentially, provided flights and accommodation align on your dates. Compact city-based stays in Alicante, Málaga, Malta or Marrakech can make sense. For a further resort transfer or a more relaxed beach holiday, compare four, five and seven-night options too.
Are winter holidays always cheaper outside school holidays?
No. School breaks can affect demand, but prices also depend on flight capacity, hotel availability, destination and the exact date. Compare real packages across neighbouring departure dates rather than trusting a supposed universal cheap day.
Does TripsByDate only show winter sun packages on this page?
No. The small article selection is filtered to Birmingham Airport, not winter weather or the six destinations discussed. That is intentional: it allows wider discovery. Choose your dates on TripsByDate and confirm each holiday's details with its provider.
Can I travel to Birmingham Airport without driving?
Yes. Birmingham International station connects to the airport using the free Air-Rail Link, and bus and coach services also serve the airport. Check the first and last available services against your actual flight times.
