Weekend Breaks from Birmingham
A change of scene does not need a week off work. A few well-chosen days can mean Lisbon viewpoints, Prague's old town or a sunny afternoon in Málaga. Here's how to find a break that works in real life, from your first look at departure dates to your journey home through BHX.

Start with your free days. Let the destination come second.
Picture this: you can get away for three nights next month, but you are not set on anywhere in particular. You might fancy a canal-side café, a beautiful old square, a beach or just somewhere with great food. Traditional holiday searches often start by asking you to narrow down where to go, then work through dates, durations and other choices. That makes it harder to explore when your time off is fixed but your destination is flexible.
TripsByDate takes a date-first approach. Select Birmingham Airport, scan the holidays shown against departure dates and see what catches your eye. It is built around quick, feed-style browsing: drop in when you have five minutes, discover a destination you had not planned on, and return when you have another free weekend. You do not have to complete a lengthy destination-led search before you can start exploring.
We display advertised package holidays from participating operators; we do not sell the holidays ourselves or claim to cover every deal. Once something looks right, check live availability, the complete price and booking terms directly with the provider. The purpose is to make discovering plausible options easier, not to promise that every weekend or route will be represented.
A smarter way to shortlist a weekend
- Fix the departure airport: choose Birmingham (BHX), so you are not comparing breaks that begin with a long drive to another airport.
- Test the days either side: compare Friday–Sunday with Thursday–Sunday, Friday–Monday or even Saturday–Tuesday if your diary allows.
- Judge the usable hours: a convenient outbound flight and a sensible return can matter more than an extra nominal night.
- Check the actual package: hotel location, airline, baggage, arrival airport, included transfers and final operator price all change the value.
Browse short holidays departing from Birmingham
The holiday selection below is filtered to BHX departures lasting 2–5 nights, with up to four packages shown in departure-date order. This is a broad short-break selection, not a guarantee of Friday-to-Sunday trips. Look at the departure and return dates carefully. Listings depend on the participating operators and our current feed.

Which kind of Birmingham weekend break should you choose?
The answer is less about which city is fashionable and more about how you want to spend the limited hours you have. The two graphics on this page feature six ideas, but treat them as inspiration rather than a promise of a direct flight or a currently bookable package on your dates.
Lisbon: for food, tiled streets and unforgettable views
If you enjoy wandering, stopping for a pastry and finding your way up to a viewpoint, Lisbon is a natural candidate. Choose a base around Baixa, Chiado or another well-connected neighbourhood, depending on the atmosphere and terrain you prefer. Lisbon's hills are part of its charm, but a bargain hotel at the top of a steep climb may not feel like a bargain after an evening out.
Weekend decision: Lisbon can reward a three-night stay more than a rushed two-night visit. Focus on a few neighbourhoods instead of automatically adding Sintra, Belém and multiple day trips. Check the official Lisbon tourism website for attractions and getting around. Flight schedules from BHX must be checked for your actual dates.
Prague: for a compact city with a big sense of occasion
Prague's Old Town, river, bridges and historic districts lend themselves to a short break with one or two priorities each day. You could spend a morning exploring the castle area and the afternoon simply crossing the city on foot, with plenty of cafés along the way.
Weekend decision: the airport is not connected to central Prague by a direct metro train. The airport recommends trolleybus 59 to Nádraží Veleslavín, then Metro A. Allow for that interchange when estimating hotel arrival time. Staying near a convenient tram or metro connection can be more useful than insisting on an Old Town address.
Málaga: for a city-and-sea break without a resort transfer
Málaga is well suited to travellers who want a cathedral, galleries, tapas and a seaside walk in the same trip. A central hotel lets you explore the historic streets and the waterfront without treating every outing as an excursion.
Weekend decision: distinguish Málaga city from a package elsewhere on the Costa del Sol. Spain's airport operator Aena lists the C1 train connection between Málaga Airport and Málaga Centro Alameda, with an indicative journey time of around 12 minutes. A resort farther along the coast may be ideal for a longer stay, but on a quick weekend the additional transfers matter.

Amsterdam: for canals, museums and easy wandering
An Amsterdam weekend can be satisfying without a packed itinerary. Choose one important museum or experience, then spend time walking beside canals, exploring neighbourhood cafés and seeing the city from a different angle.
Weekend decision: consider the total journey from Schiphol to your hotel. A central, well-connected base may save enough time to justify a higher room rate. If you hope to visit the Anne Frank House or a major museum, check ticket release and entry conditions before you book flights. Start with I amsterdam's official visitor guidance.
Budapest: for grand architecture and a slower, spa-focused escape
Budapest gives you plenty to enjoy without travelling far each day: the Danube, landmark buildings, historic streets, cafés and thermal baths. It works especially well if you want a weekend that alternates sightseeing with time to relax.
Weekend decision: decide whether you would prefer to stay in Pest for restaurants and easier evening wandering, or somewhere quieter with a particular attraction nearby. Allow time for the airport transfer and check the bath's opening times, ticket types and any age restrictions before planning your visit. The city's official visitor information is a useful starting point.
Palma, Mallorca: for Mediterranean sunshine with city-break convenience
Palma is more than an entry point to Mallorca's beach resorts. Its historic centre, cathedral, markets, marina and seafront make a good short-break combination, especially if you want to eat well and spend time outdoors without hiring a car.
Weekend decision: book for the holiday you actually want. A central Palma hotel offers a different experience from a resort package in another part of the island. Check local beach and pool conditions for the season; a sunny-looking photo is not a guarantee of swimming weather. For local ideas, see the Balearic Islands' official tourism guide.
Use the 'door-to-hotel' test, not just the flight duration
Your first graphic gives approximate flying times for Lisbon, Prague and Málaga; the second suggests Amsterdam, Budapest and Palma. Flight times are only one part of the equation and vary with the exact service. For a two-night break, door-to-hotel time matters more than airborne time.
Work out the journey from home to Birmingham Airport, pre-departure time, flight, immigration, onward transport and hotel check-in. Do the same in reverse. Then ask how many mornings, afternoons and evenings you will actually enjoy.
Here's a useful weekend comparison
- Friday night to Sunday morning: two hotel nights but possibly only one full sightseeing day.
- Friday morning to Sunday evening: the same number of nights, potentially a much more satisfying break.
- Thursday evening to Sunday evening: three nights and two substantial days, with a possible saving in annual leave depending on your work schedule.
- Saturday morning to Tuesday evening: not a conventional weekend, but worth comparing when flight or hotel patterns suit you better.
Don't automatically book the earliest possible flight. A very early departure might require a taxi or airport hotel, wiping out the saving. Likewise, a late return flight is only useful if you can actually get home after landing.

Explore departures from BHXGetting to Birmingham Airport: the details that affect a short trip
Birmingham Airport is particularly useful for travellers coming from Birmingham, Solihull, Coventry and other parts of the Midlands, but a convenient flight can still become awkward if the first train or the trip home does not fit. Plan the airport journey as carefully as the flight.
The Birmingham International station connection
Birmingham Airport is linked to Birmingham International railway station by the free Air-Rail Link. The airport currently says it operates between 03:30 and 00:30 daily. It arrives at the first floor of the airport building; follow signs down to the check-in area. Birmingham New Street is approximately 10 minutes away by direct train, according to the airport's official rail guide.
The overlooked detail: a midnight landing does not guarantee that your baggage, walk to the station and onward rail journey will finish before the Air-Rail Link or last convenient train stops running. Check both legs against the actual travel date, using National Rail, and account for planned weekend engineering works. That can change whether you choose rail, a taxi, airport parking or an overnight stay.
Driving to BHX? Know the difference between drop-off areas
The airport currently offers a designated Drop Off car park with up to 10 minutes free, around a 5–10-minute walk from the terminal via a covered route. The terminal-front Premium Set Down area is paid. The free option has a no-return-within-one-hour condition, and fees apply when you exceed its free period. Check the official drop-off and pick-up information before travelling rather than assuming all roadside stopping is free.
If you are parking for two or three nights, compare the complete parking charge with the return rail fare, taxi and any hotel needed for an early flight. For a couple or group, the cheapest option can change depending on the time of day and how far you live from the airport.
Security: don't rely on an old 100ml guide
Birmingham Airport's newer published guidance permits liquids, pastes and gels in compliant hand-luggage containers up to 2 litres, and says liquids and electronic devices can remain inside hand luggage at security. This replaced older 100ml guidance that can still be found in archived airport articles. Insulated bottles must be empty when passing through screening.
Critical return-trip tip: do not assume the airport abroad has the same liquid policy, and remember that your airline's bag size and weight limits are separate rules. Before each flight, check Birmingham Airport's current security advice, UK government guidance and the rules for your return airport.
If you have a morning flight, follow your airline's arrival and bag-drop instructions rather than assuming that online check-in or a security fast-track option removes the need to leave sufficient time.
What does a good-value weekend package really include?
A package advertised at a tempting price is a starting point, not a complete cost comparison. For short breaks, the extras can have an outsized effect because the trip itself is short.
- Flight pattern: check the arrival and return times, not just the number of nights shown.
- Hotel neighbourhood: compare the price of a central room with the transport and time needed to reach a cheaper one.
- Airport transfers: find out whether the provider includes them and whether the destination hotel is near the city you actually want to explore.
- Baggage and seats: know whether the fare includes only a small personal bag or a larger cabin suitcase, and whether you need checked luggage.
- Food and activities: a breakfast-inclusive city hotel can be convenient, but check whether you will be out early enough to use it.
- Booking protection: confirm who is selling the trip and what cover applies. See the Civil Aviation Authority's ATOL guidance.
Book one experience that really matters, perhaps an important museum, thermal bath, restaurant or walking tour. Keep the rest of the weekend flexible. Two days abroad can be excellent without trying to tick off every landmark.
Common questions about weekend breaks from Birmingham
Can I do a weekend abroad with just two nights?
Yes, when suitable flights and accommodation are available. Prioritise a direct journey where possible, a practical hotel location and flight times that leave at least one full day at your destination. A compact city is often easier than a distant resort.
Are Thursday departures usually cheaper than Friday?
Not reliably. The day, route, school holidays, hotel demand and remaining operator inventory all affect advertised prices. Compare neighbouring dates rather than relying on a fixed rule. A cheaper outward flight may be offset by an extra hotel night or annual leave.
Does TripsByDate only show Friday-to-Sunday weekends?
No. TripsByDate groups advertised holidays by departure date. The featured packages here are filtered to 2–5 nights from Birmingham, which can include midweek departures. Check each listing's dates and length before deciding whether it suits your time off.
Is Birmingham Airport easy to reach by train?
It has rail connections via Birmingham International and the free Air-Rail Link to the terminal. But the practical answer depends on where you start, the time of your flight and engineering work or late-night services on your date. Check the complete journey before paying for a holiday.
Should I choose a city break or a beach holiday for three nights?
Choose based on what you will actually do. A city centre with easy transfers often gives you more usable time for sightseeing and food. A beach hotel can be better for relaxing, provided the weather, transfer and resort location suit a short stay. Palma and Málaga can offer elements of both.
What should I check before booking an overseas weekend?
Confirm your passport and destination entry requirements, any visas or authorisations, travel insurance, provider booking conditions, flight times and final costs. Use GOV.UK foreign travel advice for the destination, and do not assume rules are identical across countries.
