Summer Holidays from Stansted
Six destinations, six quite different summers. Discover the best base for your kind of trip, the less obvious costs and what to check before booking a sunny departure from Stansted.

The real question isn't where to fly. It's what kind of summer you want.
Ibiza, Lisbon, Rhodes, Mallorca, Corfu and Sardinia look equally enticing on a sunny postcard. On the ground, they deliver strikingly different holidays. Lisbon is a city with beaches within reach, not a conventional seaside resort. Parts of Ibiza buzz until late; others are quiet villages and sheltered coves. Corfu's beaches vary noticeably by coast. Sardinia can mean a city base, a family beach resort or a journey into a remote bay.
Before choosing, decide whether your priority is an easy beach week, lively nights, a car-free holiday, adventurous exploring or a mix of city and coast. Then check the exact destination airport, resort and hotel, not just the country name. If you are still comparing types of trip, our guide to Europe's beach-holiday seasons offers a wider view.
TripsByDate works the other way round from a destination-first search form. Choose Stansted, browse participating operators' advertised packages in departure-date order, and discover places you might not have thought to type into a search box. Drop in for a quick look when your dates change; use the destination map for more inspiration. Listings are a discovery tool, not a promise of live bookability: always confirm the final offer directly with the holiday provider.

Six very different summer holidays from Stansted
Ibiza: choose the resort before you choose the nightlife
The biggest Ibiza misconception is that the whole island is a party resort. Playa d'en Bossa suits travellers who actively want clubs and beach bars nearby; San Antonio has a lively scene but also quieter accommodation outside its busiest centre; Santa Eulària is a different proposition, with a calmer promenade, restaurants and a family-friendly pace. Ibiza Town suits people who want dining, history and a more urban atmosphere.
A useful accommodation check: a hotel labelled “Ibiza” may be an awkward taxi journey from the beaches or nightlife you plan to use. Compare where you'll spend your evenings, the last practical bus and the cost of getting back. For a peaceful break, it can be worth staying away from the famous nightlife areas rather than paying for nightly transport out of them.
Not just clubs: the official Ibiza tourism beach guide shows everything from large equipped beaches to smaller coves, while its visitor FAQs explain the wider appeal of the island. If you plan to bring or hire a vehicle, check the island's current vehicle-entry arrangements and accommodation parking rather than assuming old rules still apply. For a friends-focused trip, see our girls' trips and group getaway ideas.
Lisbon: do the city and the beach, but understand the journey
Lisbon is the wildcard among these six. Its appeal is food markets, tiled neighbourhoods, viewpoints and evenings by the river, plus a proper beach day when you fancy a change. But a room in Lisbon city centre is not the same as a beach hotel. Allow time to reach the coast and back instead of assuming you can walk from the historic centre to a sandy beach.
Try this split: stay near convenient transport if culture comes first; allow a beach day on the Cascais/Estoril rail corridor when the weather suits. Portugal's national tourism site describes the rail route from Cais do Sodré to the coastal beaches, and Visit Lisboa covers Cascais and Costa da Caparica options. Costa da Caparica is not on the same straightforward rail line, so do not treat all “Lisbon beaches” as one easy journey.
The often-missed detail: the Atlantic off the Lisbon coast can feel cooler than the Mediterranean even in summer. If swimming in very warm sea water is your overriding aim, compare an island resort instead. On a short city-and-beach escape, choose a hotel with good train or metro access over one whose map pin simply looks central. Explore our weekend breaks from Stansted guide if you're considering a shorter stay.
Rhodes: look at which coast faces the wind
Rhodes is a satisfying mix of old-town history, beach days and Greek tavernas. Rhodes Town makes a good base if the medieval streets and restaurants are the main attraction; Faliraki has extensive holiday facilities and a livelier resort atmosphere; Lindos offers dramatic views and history, but its lanes and hills can be challenging in peak heat. A hotel outside these centres can be ideal for pool-led relaxation, but less convenient for evening exploring.
A less obvious choice: the island's prevailing summer north-westerly wind matters. Rhodes municipality's tourist guide describes the Meltemi winds. Wind exposure and waves vary by beach, so if calm water and easy swimming matter, compare the specific shore and recent local conditions rather than booking solely from a beautiful picture. A breezy spot can be appealing for watersports, but less suitable for someone seeking still-water paddling.
For families and older travellers: ask whether your hotel has steep approaches, lengthy walks to the beach or limited shade. For sightseeing, choose an earlier start in very hot weather. Do not promise yourself both an unhurried pool day and a full medieval-town visit on the same afternoon.

Mallorca: a family beach week and a Palma holiday aren't the same thing
All these options can arrive through Palma de Mallorca Airport, yet the hotel location shapes the whole week. For families who want long sandy beaches, explore Alcúdia or Playa de Muro. For couples interested in food, galleries and evenings in a city, Palma itself may be a better base. The east-coast coves and mountain villages make wonderful scenery-focused holidays, but parking and road access can be difficult around popular beauty spots in high season.
Practical tip: judge a “near the beach” hotel by the walking route, not the straight-line distance. A steep road or awkward crossing matters when you are carrying beach bags and travelling with small children. Also check whether the pool, kids' club and air conditioning are included in the room or package you are actually buying.
For a more detailed seasonal perspective, read when to visit Spain. If you're comparing two beaches on the same island, use official tourism information and current maps rather than relying on a generic island-wide temperature figure.
Corfu: an island where the right coastline changes the holiday
Corfu's green hills and spectacular coves make it different from the drier-looking islands in many summer brochures. But the east and west coasts are not interchangeable. Corfu's official visitor website describes the eastern shore as generally more sheltered, while western beaches are more exposed to winds and can have waves. The local tourism beach guide and Visit Greece beach overview are worth checking before picking a resort.
Which base? The east or northeast can suit people prioritising sheltered coves, tavernas and relaxing sea days. The west offers dramatic scenery and sandy stretches in several areas, but some well-known beaches involve winding roads, stairs or exposed sections. Corfu Town suits people who value architecture, food and transport connections more than a resort-only holiday.
Unusual but useful: if the photographs show a tiny cove, investigate the number of steps, beach surface and parking before you commit. An idyllic swimming stop may be unsuitable for a pushchair or for someone who finds steep paths difficult. On a seven-night holiday, sometimes the best option is to choose one easy beach near the hotel and book a single bigger exploring day.
Sardinia: don't book “Sardinia” until you know the airport
Sardinia is a particularly interesting choice for Stansted because it gives travellers an alternative to the usual Spanish and Greek islands. The colour of its water is famous, but its geography is easy to underestimate. Olbia, Cagliari and Alghero are gateways to different corners of a large island. A hotel in the wrong region can turn the start and end of your holiday into an unnecessarily long road trip.
The Sardinian regional tourism authority describes Olbia as the gateway to the northeast, Cagliari to the south and Alghero to the northwest. Stansted's 2026 route announcement included a BA CityFlyer service to Olbia, but that does not guarantee flights or package availability on every future date.
Smart planning: if you want a car-free holiday, look for a resort with restaurants and an accessible beach close together; if you want hidden coves and rural villages, investigate car hire, parking and insurance before choosing the hotel. Do not build a first-time Sardinia itinerary from six famous beaches without checking driving distances. For something different, Stansted also reported an expanded Italian route network in summer 2026; this is inspiration, not a claim about next summer's schedules.

Explore holidays by dateJune, July, August or September: choose for comfort, not a slogan
June: a good month to consider when you want longer daylight and a mix of sightseeing and beaches before the main UK school holidays. Sea warmth still varies by location. July and August: usually the obvious choice for families tied to school dates and people who enjoy lively resorts, but the heat, demand and queuing can be substantial. September: often appealing for adults with more flexibility and a calmer atmosphere, while weather and seasonal flight patterns still need checking.
No month or weekday is automatically cheapest. An early June week can be expensive in a particular hotel; an August departure may occasionally be good value for the right party and room. Compare the total trip, not vague rules about when flights “always” cost less. Our annual-leave planning guide helps you work out alternative departure windows.
How to get better value without ruining your holiday
The useful comparison is not “Which destination has the cheapest headline deal?” but which holiday gives you the experience you want for the whole cost. A beachfront property with a higher advertised price can beat an inexpensive hillside apartment once taxis, car hire and meals are considered.
- Compare departure patterns: try a Thursday or Tuesday departure, or an eight- or ten-night stay as well as seven nights, if your annual leave permits. A different flight-and-hotel combination can change the price.
- Compare the correct room: check occupancy, children's ages, air conditioning, balconies and whether the room advertised is actually available for your group.
- Price baggage as a family: compare the cost of sharing checked luggage with buying several individual cabin-bag upgrades. Allowances vary by airline and fare.
- Work out your arrival day: a late arrival into an island airport with a long transfer may cost a night of useful holiday time. Check the return journey too.
- Read the transfer detail: an included shared coach can have many hotel stops; a rental car brings fuel, deposits and parking responsibilities.
- Question all-inclusive: it may suit pool-focused family trips, but half-board or self-catering might be more rewarding if you plan to spend every day exploring restaurants and villages.

Getting to Stansted: the local details people overlook
Coming from London? Pick your interchange before your train
Stansted Airport has a railway station close to the terminal. The airport's official rail guide covers trains from London Liverpool Street and connections via Tottenham Hale and Stratford. Tottenham Hale can be particularly useful if you're arriving on the Victoria line. Travellers from Essex, Hertfordshire or Cambridgeshire should compare their own local rail and coach options rather than automatically routing through central London.
The early-flight trap: “trains every 15 minutes” is not a promise that trains run all night. Check the first train for your actual departure date and the final connection after you land. Stansted Express ran a limited overnight Friday trial in summer 2026, not a year-round guarantee. For a very early check-in, compare a coach, lift or airport hotel against the cost and sleep lost on an awkward journey.
Being dropped off? There is a free alternative
Stansted has a paid terminal-front Express Set Down area, but its Mid Stay car park currently offers up to 60 minutes free for pick-up or drop-off, with a free shuttle to the terminal. That can be particularly helpful if somebody is giving your family a lift. Prices, return-entry restrictions and shuttle arrangements can change, so check the current airport page before travelling.
Don't copy the liquids advice from another UK airport
Stansted's September 2026 security advice still sets the usual limit at 100ml per liquid container for ordinary cabin baggage. Liquids can remain inside your bag during screening, but a half-full larger container is not permitted. Rules can be different at the airport you return from. Check both airports and your airline's separate baggage allowance before packing sunscreen or toiletries.
A quick pre-booking checklist for Stansted summer holidays
- Choose the beach, city or island experience first; don't just choose the cheapest-looking country.
- Check the exact arrival airport and the transfer to the actual hotel.
- Check whether the beach is sandy or pebbly, how sheltered it is and whether access involves steps.
- Compare the complete price for your party, including room type, baggage, transfers and local charges.
- Confirm how you will reach Stansted for your specific flight time and get home after landing.
- Check passport validity, entry rules and local advice with GOV.UK, and review the provider's terms and any applicable ATOL protection.
Frequently asked questions about summer holidays from Stansted
Which summer destination is best for families?
There is no single best island. Family-focused areas of Mallorca and parts of Corfu or Rhodes can be excellent, but the deciding factors are the individual beach, shallow-water conditions, hotel facilities, transport and your children's ages. Check the actual resort rather than assuming every hotel on a family-friendly island is suitable.
Can I have a beach holiday in Lisbon?
Yes, but Lisbon is first and foremost a city base. You can reach beaches in the Cascais area by train; other coastal options use different transport. For a holiday where you want to step out of your room onto sand every morning, a dedicated beach resort may be a better fit.
Do I need a hire car in Sardinia or Corfu?
Not necessarily. A convenient resort with walkable beaches and restaurants can make a relaxed car-free stay. Exploring remote coves, rural villages or multiple regions may be harder without one. Check public transport, parking and hotel location before deciding.
Does this page show only summer departures?
No. It shows a small, date-ordered selection of participating operators' Stansted package listings without restricting them to summer months. This is intentional, so visitors can explore other possibilities. Final availability and prices must be checked with the supplier.
Can Stansted be convenient if I do not live in London?
Yes, depending on your transport links. Stansted is useful for travellers in parts of Essex, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire as well as London. Check the whole journey, especially for early morning departures and late returns, rather than comparing airports purely by distance.
