Holidays from Glasgow Prestwick Airport
Make the most of Prestwick's direct rail station, short terminal walk and sunshine destinations, with practical advice on real flight availability, transport and total holiday costs.

Glasgow Prestwick Airport has one particularly useful advantage that many UK airports cannot offer: a railway station connected to the passenger terminal by a covered walkway. For some travellers in Ayrshire, Glasgow and the west of Scotland, that can make an affordable holiday simpler from the moment they leave home. But Prestwick and Glasgow International are separate airports, and the route choices are not interchangeable.
This guide looks at Alicante, Palma de Mallorca and Kraków because they appear in our images, while making an important distinction: Kraków is a city-break idea, not a confirmed current direct Prestwick route. The airport's live destination list includes Alicante and Palma but does not currently list Kraków. We'll also explore what makes Prestwick different for rail passengers, drivers and travellers comparing the full cost of a holiday.
Is Prestwick the right airport for your holiday?
- For a convenient coastal escape: look at Alicante, Malaga, Faro and other destinations currently offered, then match the airport to the resort you actually want.
- For family beach holidays: Palma de Mallorca can work well when the departure day, hotel facilities and transfers fit your family. Flights may be seasonal.
- For winter sunshine: check whether Tenerife, Lanzarote or Gran Canaria has a suitable service for your exact dates; destinations do not necessarily operate daily or year-round.
- For a city break: Barcelona and Pisa are worth investigating on the airport's current schedule. Kraków needs a different airport or an independently verified connecting itinerary if there is no direct Prestwick service.
Check actual departure dates before choosing a destination
A smaller route network can be an advantage if you find a direct flight at the right price, but fewer operating days can limit three- or four-night combinations. Start by searching the dates you can take off work, then see what Prestwick offers. If you have a fixed weekend, compare how many usable hours remain after the flight and transfer. If you have seven nights, a resort farther from the arrival airport may be more worthwhile.

Destinations worth comparing from Prestwick
1. Alicante and the Costa Blanca: choose the coast that suits you
Alicante can suit a city-and-beach weekend in its own right, with a waterfront, traditional neighbourhoods, the Santa Bárbara Castle viewpoint and easy access to the surrounding coast. For a longer beach holiday, the Costa Blanca also includes very different choices such as Benidorm, Altea, Calpe and quieter coastal towns. Do not assume that a package advertised as “Alicante” means your hotel is in Alicante city.
Useful booking trick: compare the destination transfer before comparing hotel star ratings. A centrally located Alicante hotel can suit a short stay far better than a remote resort; a week-long family holiday may justify a longer transfer for better pools or beach access. Alicante works for sightseeing in cooler seasons, but Mediterranean sea swimming and hotel facilities vary through the year. For local ideas see the Valencian Community's official tourism information and our Spain timing guide.
2. Palma and Majorca: decide whether you want a city or resort holiday
Palma is excellent for a short break built around its cathedral, historic lanes, markets and cafés. Majorca's beach resorts are a different proposition: Playa de Palma can reduce airport transfer time, while Alcúdia and Playa de Muro suit many families wanting long sandy beaches. Some scenic coves and quieter resort towns take considerably longer to reach.
Do not confuse a summer route with a year-round promise. Prestwick has included Palma in its summer schedule, but the days and dates of operation can change. Check the airport's published destinations and your operator before planning school-holiday dates. Outside peak summer, confirm which hotel pools, clubs and restaurants are open. Official Mallorca visitor information is useful for destinations beyond the main resorts.

3. Kraków: a great city break idea, but check the actual departure airport
Kraków deserves its place on a city-break wish list: the Main Market Square, Kazimierz, Wawel Hill and traditional Polish food are well suited to two or three full days. However, the current published Prestwick destination directory does not list Kraków. Do not plan a direct flight from Prestwick based on this infographic. Check availability from Glasgow Airport or Edinburgh Airport instead, and confirm the actual airline and travel date.
If Kraków is available from another airport, look for a central base and sensible flight hours. A low fare that requires a long journey across Scotland or loses most of your first day may not represent better value. The official Kraków tourist website is a good starting point for seasonal events and visitor information.
Prestwick's major advantage: the airport railway station
Prestwick International Airport station (PRA) is connected to the terminal via a covered walkway. The airport says services run along the Glasgow Central–Ayr line, typically taking about 40 minutes from Glasgow Central and about ten minutes from Ayr. The airport also says there are usually two trains an hour each way, but the timetable is reduced late at night and on Sundays. Consult the airport's transport guidance and ScotRail for the date of your flight.
Two traps to avoid: the airport station is Prestwick International Airport, not Prestwick Town; and a departure before the first train may need a taxi, overnight stay or parking even though the station is on site. The airport's information states tickets cannot be bought at the station, so plan to purchase in advance or use the operator's permitted onboard option. Check any rail discounts directly rather than assuming a special airport fare applies.
The rail station provides step-free access and help points, but travellers requiring assistance should arrange it with the train operator and airline. National Rail's station guide explains current access arrangements. With young children or heavy cases, allow more time than the covered walkway's short distance alone suggests.
Driving and parking: three different car parks
Glasgow Prestwick is near the A77, with links towards Glasgow, Ayrshire and the south-west of Scotland. The airport's postcode is KA9 2PL. On site, the official parking guide distinguishes Car Park 1, premium spaces nearest the terminal; Car Park 2, also close to the building; and Car Park 3, accessed via the railway-station walkway, which is pre-book only and seasonally closed.
For drop-off and collection: the designated terminal area is chargeable. Compare the current tariff rather than parking on an access road or assuming a short stop is free. The airport states that its car park payments are cashless. Blue Badge users have a separate short drop-off allowance, so consult the latest airport rules. For longer trips, compare the parking quote with rail fares, petrol and any cost of reaching Glasgow Central before deciding.
At security: Prestwick has different rules from Glasgow International
According to Prestwick's published security guidance, ordinary liquids and gels must remain in containers of 100ml or less and be presented in the specified clear resealable bag. Larger electrical devices may need to be removed for separate screening. Do not assume that security rules at a different Scottish airport, or at your return airport, apply at Prestwick. Essential medicines and baby products may have exemptions, subject to screening and supporting documentation.
Budget-flight reminder: the airport's security allowances are different from your carrier's baggage allowance. An item can be permitted by security and still make your bag too large for the ticket you bought. Double-check your airline's small-bag and cabin-bag dimensions and complete online check-in where required.
When Prestwick is genuinely better value
- When the flight is truly direct: save time and avoid the risks of self-connecting through a larger airport.
- When you can reach the station easily: include the rail fare and timetable, not just the attractive proximity of the station to the terminal.
- When your dates match the route frequency: a three-night break may be excellent, or impossible without awkward dates. Test three, four and seven nights.
- When the hotel suits the trip: city-centre Alicante is different from a faraway beach resort; Palma city is different from a summer family hotel.
- When the whole package stacks up: total baggage, transfers, meals, parking, seats and accommodation costs matter more than a flight-only headline fare.
- When it avoids a costly airport transfer: compare Glasgow Airport and Prestwick door-to-door, not just flight to flight.

Search holidays by dateFive easy mistakes to avoid at a smaller airport
1. Assuming every popular city is a direct route. Check the airport directory, not just promotional inspiration. 2. Assuming a rail link means trains at every hour. Early mornings and Sundays need extra care. 3. Assuming low-cost means a protected package. A flight-only ticket and an eligible flight-inclusive package have different protections. Read the CAA's ATOL guidance. 4. Forgetting the return journey. The last train home matters as much as the outbound. 5. Choosing the first resort shown. Compare transfer times, board basis and open hotel facilities.
Frequently asked questions about Glasgow Prestwick holidays
