Holidays from Belfast City Airport
Discover the realistic holiday options from Belfast City (BHD), from direct city breaks to seasonal beach trips and carefully planned connecting journeys.

Belfast City Airport, also called George Best Belfast City Airport, offers something valuable to holidaymakers: a departure point close to central Belfast, with direct UK and Amsterdam flights and a smaller selection of seasonal leisure routes. That can make a two- or three-night break unusually practical. But there is an important catch: not every sunny destination shown in an inspiration graphic has a nonstop service from Belfast City.
Use this guide to choose between a genuinely direct break, a connecting holiday and a trip from Belfast International instead. We'll explain the real difference between BHD and BFS, which airports are useful for changing planes, how to reach the terminal, and which costs can undo an apparently cheap deal. Check the latest official Belfast City airline and route directory before committing to a destination.
Start with the right kind of Belfast City holiday
- Easy city break: Amsterdam is a direct international destination, with canals, museums and excellent onward rail connections.
- Summer beach holiday: Palma de Mallorca appears on the airport's seasonal direct-flight network; confirm dates and the operating airline.
- UK short break: frequent links to cities such as Edinburgh, Manchester, London and others can make a compact trip work well.
- More distant or less obvious places: Lisbon, Málaga, Faro and Nice appear in the infographics, but are not on the current published direct-route list. Explore connecting itineraries or another departure airport rather than assuming a nonstop service exists.
Choose your dates first, then check whether the journey works
For a short holiday, flying from a convenient airport can outweigh a slightly cheaper fare elsewhere. But check the round trip: a Friday evening outbound and early Sunday return gives far less time away than a Thursday-to-Monday itinerary. Routes, airlines and packages can vary by season, especially for Palma. If your first-choice destination needs a connection, compare the total door-to-hotel journey and the extra connection risk before deciding it is the better deal.

Holiday ideas from Belfast City that deserve a closer look
1. Amsterdam: a direct city break that works for a few nights
The airport lists Amsterdam with KLM, making it a clear choice for culture, food and a change of scenery. The Anne Frank House, canal neighbourhoods, world-class museums and easy public transport can fill two or three days without constant travel across the city. Stay near a convenient tram, metro or rail stop rather than paying a premium for an address that is only marginally more central.
Book the attractions you actually care about. Popular museums and the Anne Frank House can require timed admission and may sell out. Use the Anne Frank House's official ticket information and Rijksmuseum bookings. If you arrive late, plan a simple canal walk or dinner for the first evening rather than a rushed paid activity. Amsterdam is often better as a walking-and-museums weekend than a hotel-heavy package holiday.
Connection opportunity: Amsterdam Schiphol is also a major onward hub. A through-ticket from Belfast City may make other European destinations possible, but compare baggage rules, connection time and whether all flights are on a single booking. A connection is not equivalent to a direct flight.
2. Palma and Mallorca: seasonal sunshine with very different bases
Palma de Mallorca is a seasonal direct destination listed by Belfast City Airport, including summer flights associated with easyJet and TUI. It is excellent for a long weekend in Palma itself or a longer beach-based holiday. The Gothic cathedral, old-town lanes, cafés and waterfront make Palma appealing without needing to hire a car; resorts around the island offer a very different pace.
Match the hotel to your stay length. For three nights, Palma or a resort with an easy airport transfer may give you much more usable time. For a family week, Playa de Muro, Alcúdia or another beach area might be worth the longer transfer. Check the actual room arrangement, beach access, pool facilities and transfer duration. Outside the main season, seasonal resort services and direct flight schedules can be limited; verify both before paying. See official Mallorca tourism guidance and our Spain seasonal planning guide.

3. Nice: an appealing city-and-coast idea, but check the connection
Nice works beautifully for visitors who like culture and the seaside together: walk the Promenade des Anglais, explore Vieux Nice and take a train to nearby coastal towns. The city is compact enough to reward a three- or four-night break. It is featured in the hero infographic, but Nice is not currently listed as a direct Belfast City route. Before building your itinerary, look for a protected connecting fare or compare alternatives from Belfast International.
Time-saving tip: Nice Airport has public transport connections into town, so a hotel near the tram or central station can be more useful than an isolated seaside property. See Nice Côte d'Azur's official tourism site. When connections add most of a day in each direction, Nice might suit four nights better than two.
4. Lisbon, Málaga and Faro: attractive ideas, not automatically BHD nonstop flights
The extra infographic suggests Lisbon, Málaga and Faro. They are worthwhile holiday destinations, but they do not appear on the airport's present direct-route directory. That distinction protects readers from designing a holiday around an assumed direct service. For Lisbon, think trams, viewpoints and food-led city days. Málaga offers both an engaging city and the Costa del Sol; Faro opens up the Algarve, where resort transfers can vary substantially.
For each, first compare a single-booking connection via an appropriate hub against routes from Belfast International Airport. For a five-to-seven-night holiday, a connection may be worthwhile; for a rushed two-night getaway, the lost hours can overwhelm any fare saving. Useful destination resources include Visit Lisboa, Andalusia's tourism portal and Visit Portugal.
Belfast City versus Belfast International: don't book the wrong airport
Belfast City is BHD; Belfast International is BFS. They are separate airports with different route networks and ground-transport journeys. Belfast City is close to central Belfast; Belfast International lies farther northwest. Never assume a flight advertised as “Belfast” uses the airport you prefer. Read the IATA code on both your outbound and return tickets, and check the destination and operator before paying for a taxi or parking.
For a package holiday, Belfast International may offer a different range of beach routes. However, the more convenient local airport may still win if the full itinerary from home is easier. Compare our Belfast International guide, then calculate both journeys door to door rather than comparing flight prices alone.
Getting to Belfast City Airport: bus or train?
Airport Express 600: the straightforward city-centre link
The Airport Express 600 links the terminal with Belfast Grand Central Station and serves the city centre. The airport describes services at roughly 20-minute intervals in peak periods, with a journey around ten minutes from Grand Central under typical conditions. Timetables and journey times vary; check the airport's official public-transport guide and Translink for your actual date. This is particularly important on Sundays and for the first or last service of the day.
Sydenham rail halt is nearby, but it isn't inside the terminal
NI Railways serves Sydenham, with an onward route to the airport by foot involving a footbridge and the Sydenham Bypass. It is not a train that takes you straight to check-in. The airport advises against that walking connection for travellers who struggle with steps. A courtesy bus to the halt can be requested using the contact number on the official airport transport page; check the latest arrangements before depending on it.
Practical choice: with a pushchair, several suitcases or accessibility needs, the terminal-side airport bus or an arranged taxi may be easier. Check your transport at the same time as your flights, not the day before.
Parking, pick-up and a small but useful free option
The airport currently permits up to ten minutes free in its Long Stay car park for quick drop-offs or pick-ups. This is different from the charged Express Drop Off & Pick Up zone near the terminal. Express currently uses ticketless number-plate recognition, while Long Stay, Short Stay and Premier parking serve different lengths and types of visit. These arrangements and tariffs can change; check official drop-off and pick-up guidance before setting off.
For a week away: compare pre-booked Long Stay with a taxi or bus for everyone travelling. The cheapest parking product may involve a longer walk. Premier parking includes additional convenience and Fast Track benefits, but paying for it is only worthwhile if it genuinely saves your party time. Avoid stopping on signed no-stopping roads, even briefly.
Security at Belfast City: the rules may differ from your return airport
Unlike some UK airports retaining a 100ml liquid limit, Belfast City's published security rules currently permit liquid containers up to two litres, and its new screening technology allows liquids and larger electronics to remain in cabin bags. This is airport security guidance, not permission to exceed your airline's baggage allowance. Consult the airport's current security FAQ before travelling.
Do not assume the same rule applies abroad. Your connecting or return airport may require much smaller containers. Medication, baby supplies and mobility aids may have separate screening arrangements. Pack accordingly, particularly if changing aircraft on the same holiday.
Accessible departures and family travel
Belfast City offers special assistance for travellers with reduced mobility, disabilities and hidden disabilities. Request assistance through the airline, agent or tour operator at least 48 hours before departure wherever possible. The airport identifies assistance call points in parking areas and a service desk in the terminal; see its official assistance guide. Blue Badge holders have additional short-stay drop-off arrangements, subject to validation and the airport's rules.
For families, compare the whole day rather than a flight's advertised duration: airport travel, buggy handling, baggage rules, hotel transfers and late-night arrivals. A conveniently timed direct UK or Amsterdam break may feel more relaxing than a nominally sunny weekend involving two flights and a late connection. For travel with children, check family room configurations and whether the destination hotel operates its activities on your exact dates.

Explore holidays by dateHow to compare Belfast City holidays without overpaying
- Compare like with like: a flight-plus-hotel price may exclude hold baggage, local taxes, transfers or meals.
- Count usable days: a short Amsterdam break benefits from convenient times; a long connection may swallow most of a weekend.
- Check BHD versus BFS: include transport, parking and airport travel time in both calculations.
- Use flexible dates: moving one or two days can uncover different trip lengths and routings, but savings are never guaranteed.
- Don't assume all routes run year-round: Palma is seasonal and airline schedules change.
- Look for booking protection: learn about qualifying flight-inclusive packages from the Civil Aviation Authority's ATOL guide.
- Check connections on one booking: separate tickets may require baggage reclaim and recheck, and missed-flight protection is not necessarily the same.
