Holidays from Aberdeen Airport

Plan a sunshine escape, city break or family holiday from Aberdeen, with realistic route advice and practical ABZ airport tips.

Holidays from Aberdeen Airport inspiration featuring Tenerife, Lisbon and Palma, with tips for family, beach and city breaks

Flying from Aberdeen can turn a holiday into a much simpler prospect for travellers across north-east Scotland. Instead of automatically travelling south to another airport, start by checking which direct flights and packages actually operate from Aberdeen (ABZ) on your available dates. A convenient departure can save a great deal of road or rail travel, but a small change in date or destination can also make a big difference to the holiday you get.

Our images highlight Tenerife, Lisbon and Palma de Mallorca. They represent three appealing travel styles, but with one essential distinction: Tenerife is listed among Aberdeen's destinations, Mallorca has newly announced seasonal services, and Lisbon should not be assumed to have a direct Aberdeen flight. Check the official Aberdeen Airport destination directory before choosing accommodation or booking a separate flight.

Which holiday from Aberdeen should you consider?

  • Warm-weather resort holiday: Tenerife offers beaches, nature, family accommodation and a longer sunshine season than many Mediterranean destinations.
  • Summer beach holiday: Palma de Mallorca is the gateway to varied resorts, from family-friendly Alcúdia to Palma's own cultural sights, but flight dates and season matter.
  • Food and culture: Lisbon is a lovely city-break idea if you can find a sensible connection or package, but weigh the extra journey against other direct destinations.
  • Other direct possibilities: the airport's advertised network includes places such as Alicante, Malaga, Faro, Kraków and Gdańsk. Confirm which are operating on your exact dates.

Make your travel dates do more of the work

Aberdeen travellers can benefit from searching by dates first rather than assuming a particular destination will fly every day. Compare a long weekend with four nights, look across nearby departure dates and check whether the package uses a direct flight. For families, prioritise arrival times and hotel transfers; for a short city break, count the usable hours at your destination, not only the number of nights advertised.

Three holiday styles in the Aberdeen infographic

1. Tenerife: sunshine with a choice of very different bases

Tenerife makes a practical escape from colder Scottish weather, but picking the right part of the island is more important than picking the island alone. Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos offer established resort facilities; Puerto de la Cruz in the north has a different atmosphere and usually more variable weather. The island's dramatic interior, including Mount Teide, is much cooler at altitude.

Value tip: compare a week in a convenient southern resort with a cheaper hotel farther from the places you want to visit. Ask whether airport transfers are included, whether the hotel pool is heated in winter and what the child facilities actually operate on your dates. The official Tenerife tourism site is helpful for resort and activity information; our winter-sun guide compares the seasonal choices.

Departure tip: verify the actual Aberdeen flight and season before booking a resort independently. A route appearing in a destination directory does not promise a departure every day or a convenient return for your preferred stay length.

2. Palma de Mallorca: choose your resort and travel season

Palma Airport serves both the city and the wider island. Palma suits sightseeing, food and a shorter cultural break. Playa de Palma can reduce transfer time for a quick coastal stay, while Alcúdia and Playa de Muro appeal to families seeking spacious sandy beaches. A remote cove may be wonderful for a week but less practical for three nights.

Important route detail: Aberdeen Airport has announced new easyJet summer links to Mallorca, alongside Barcelona. That is useful news for local travellers, but it is not a promise of a year-round flight. Consult the airport's route announcement and live booking schedules. Check family room layouts, late-arrival transfers and resort facilities outside the main summer season. See official Mallorca visitor information.

3. Lisbon: a beautiful city break, but check the itinerary

Lisbon rewards visitors with tiled streets, viewpoints, trams, food markets and riverfront neighbourhoods. For a relaxed visit, choose a hotel near the sights you want to explore, wear shoes with grip for the hills and cobbles, and avoid filling every hour with attractions. A day around Belém or a visit to Sintra can be worthwhile on a longer stay.

The flight decision: Lisbon appears in our infographic as a holiday idea, not as a verified nonstop Aberdeen route. A connecting itinerary might work well, especially for four or more nights, but on a two-night trip the connection could consume too much time. Check whether the entire itinerary is on one ticket, whether bags transfer through, and the protection offered if the first flight runs late. For local planning use Visit Lisboa and our Portugal timing guide.

Getting to Aberdeen Airport: the local details that matter

Jet 727 bus from the city centre

The Stagecoach Jet 727 connects Aberdeen city centre and the airport, including the Union Square bus station area. The airport currently describes journeys as taking from around 30 minutes, with frequent services and some through-the-night journeys. Check the official 727 bus information for your particular departure time. A route advertised as frequent during the day may be less convenient for a flight leaving before dawn.

Dyce station is not the airport terminal

Aberdeen has no train station inside its terminal. Dyce is the nearest railway station, around two miles away, so a separate taxi or other road transfer is normally required. This matters if you're bringing skis, a pushchair or several cases. If coming from farther afield, compare a train to Aberdeen city centre plus the 727 with a train to Dyce plus the final transfer; the better choice depends on connections, luggage and timings. See the airport's train access guide and ScotRail for schedules.

Drop-off and parking: save money by using the right place

The terminal-front Express Drop Off is a chargeable convenience option for a quick stop. Aberdeen also offers a free Long Stay pick-up and drop-off period of up to one hour, with a shuttle connection to the terminal. This is more useful if a driver needs to wait for a passenger or help manage bags without paying terminal-front tariffs. Rules and prices can change, so use the official drop-off guide rather than relying on a printed tariff.

Accessibility detail: the airport directs Blue Badge holders to the Short Stay car park rather than Express Drop Off and publishes a separate short free drop-off arrangement. Confirm eligibility, how to validate the stay and any assistance requirements with the airport before travel. For a week or longer, compare prepaid Long Stay and Short Stay parking against bus, taxi and the costs of an awkward late-night return.

Aberdeen Airport security and baggage: don't get caught out

The airport's current rule is that individual liquids in cabin bags must be in containers of 100ml or less. Its updated security guidance allows permitted small liquids to stay in your bag without the old clear liquids bag, but that doesn't remove the size restriction. Read the official hand-baggage guidance just before departure because rules can change.

Check your return airport as well. A different airport may require liquids or electronics to be presented differently. Airport security rules also differ from an airline's limits on cabin-bag size, weight and the number of bags included in your ticket. Keep medication and essential baby supplies accessible and check the relevant exemptions.

Aberdeen's Northern Lights Lounge: useful or unnecessary extra?

The Northern Lights Executive Lounge offers an indoor place to sit with food, drink and airfield views, while Priority Security may also be available separately. Whether either is worth paying for depends on your group, departure time and how long you can actually use the facility. For families, check child admission and whether lounge access includes priority security; packages and eligibility differ. If travelling on a tight budget, a lounge isn't automatically better value than bringing suitable snacks and arriving at a sensible time.

Six ways to get better holiday value from Aberdeen

  • Compare the exact flight type: a direct Aberdeen departure and a connecting flight to the same destination are not equivalent for travel time or disruption risk.
  • Price the full journey: include car parking, bus or taxi fares, luggage, hotel transfers and meals before deciding the cheapest advertised package is the best.
  • Try several trip lengths: three or four nights can be ideal for a city; a seven-night island holiday may justify the journey better than a rushed weekend.
  • Watch seasonal routes: summer flights may not be available in winter, and a route listing doesn't mean a departure on every date.
  • Don't overlook school term dates: Scotland's school calendars may differ from English holiday periods, and local authority dates vary. Check Scottish school-term information before booking a family package.
  • Understand package protection: check the organiser, inclusions, cancellation conditions and applicable Civil Aviation Authority ATOL guidance.

When should you choose a different Scottish airport?

Aberdeen is convenient for many north-east travellers, but it will not have every destination, flight frequency or holiday duration. A connection through a hub can open more options without driving to another airport; alternatively, a direct flight from Edinburgh or Glasgow may justify the extra ground journey for a longer holiday. Compare the Edinburgh departure guide and Glasgow holiday guide alongside the whole cost of travelling from your own home. The best airport is the one that gives you the best overall itinerary, not necessarily the lowest flight price.
